Pre-modern Mathematical Thought : The Latin Discussion (13th-16th Centuries) /

: This book takes readers through an exploration of fundamental discussions that redefined mathematics and its philosophical significance in the centuries foregoing modernity. From William of Auvergne's paradoxes of infinity to Christoph Clavius' interpretation of Euclidean principles, it examines the evolving understanding of central issues among which continuity, the existence of mathematical objects such as numbers, and the way humans can make true statements regarding such things. Each chapter sheds light on how premodern scholars bridged mathematics and philosophy, forging concepts and approaches that continued to influence early modern thought. A compelling read for historians, philosophers, and anyone intrigued by the origins and enduring legacy of mathematical ideas as both tools for inquiry and objects of reflection. Contributors are Joël Biard, Stephen Clucas, Clelia V. Crialesi, Vincenzo De Risi, Daniel Di Liscia, André Goddu, Kamil Majcherek, Paolo Mancosu, Aurélien Robert, Sabine Rommevaux, Sylvain Roudaut, and Cecilia Trifogli.

Pre-Nicene christology in paschal contexts : the case of the divine Noetic anthropos /

: In Pre-Nicene Christology in Paschal Contexts Dragoş A. Giulea re-examines the earliest texts related to the festival of Easter in light of Second Temple traditions. Commonly portrayed as sacrificial lamb, the key actor of the paschal narrative is here designated as heavenly Kabod , Divine Image, King of the Powers, celestial Anthropos, Demiurge, Son of Man, each of these divine names implying a corresponding soteriological function. Dragoş A. Giulea indicates as well that the Greek philosophical vocabulary and certain idioms of the mystery religions inspired new categories which reshaped the traditional way of describing the nature of celestial entities and the epistemological capacities able to access these realities. Thus, the King of the Powers, or the Son of Man, is several times described as a noetic Anthropos, while initiation and noetic perception become the appropriate methods of accessing the divine.

The despoliation of Egypt in pre-rabbinic, rabbinic and patristic traditions /

: This work examines the role played by the biblical motif of the despoliation of Egypt in the understanding Gentiles had of Jews, and how Jews defended themselves, their heroes and their God in the face of anti-Jewish slander. It also examines the manner in which Christians learned from their rabbinic counterparts how to defend Moses and his God against the gnostic challenge. Beginning with Philo and based on haggadic additions, the embarrassment of the episode was 'healed' through allegory and became a critically important biblical justification for the Christian appropriation of the 'Egyptian treasures' of their Greco-Roman cultural heritage. This work describes how Christians borrowed exegetical traditions from rabbis not only to defend their sacred texts against gnostic attacks but to justify their interest in and appropriation of non-Christian philosophy in their theological understandings.

Bibliography of the Indonesian Revolution : Publications from 1942 to 1994 /

: Interest in the Indonesian Revolution, a period of crucial importance in the history of modern Indonesia, continues unabated, as reflected in this bibliography. The bibliography lists more than 6,000 titles related to the Indonesian Revolution (1945-1949), the West Irian issue (1950-1962), and the South Moluccan question (1950-1951) and its aftermath. It is the first bibliography of such depth and scope, and purports to offer a complete listing of scholarly works, including unpublished theses, as well as journalistic accounts, pamphlets, memoirs, and fictional works. Most of the works listed are in Indonesian, Dutch, or English, but relevant works in French, German, Russian, Japanese, and other languages have also been included. An introduction allows a first acquaintance with the mass of publications listed. The titles are arranged by period, and subdivided by language. Indexes of authors, of subjects, of persons, and of geographical names make it possible to access the titles in more detail.

Encounters in quest of Christian womanhood : the Basel Mission in pre- and early colonial Ghana /

: Christianity has come to be a religion embraced especially by women and not least in Africa. This book provides one of the as yet rare case studies for the early stages of this development: how African women on the pre- and early colonial Gold Coast (Ghana) encountered Basel Mission Christianity, 1843-1885. Popular interpretations have tended to describe Christianity as either 'empowering' or 'domesticating' African women. Looking at variegated push-and-pull factors and in its focus on the agency of Ghanaian women this detailed analysis moves beyond. It situates the quest for Christian womanhood as part of trans-national discourses and exchanges, as well as local interactions, and writes a social history that is at once transnational and transcultural.

Cult as the catalyst for division : cult disputes as the motive for schism in the pre-70 pluralistic environment /

: The study asserts that conflicting sacrificial rules were the motive of the schism in Judean society, in the last period of the Second Temple. The study substantiates the thesis by a meticulous examination and comparison of the rabbinic and Qumran exegetical methods, and an exhaustive scrutiny of biblical sacrificial rules, demonstrating their deficiencies, the cause of the exegetical dissensions among the different groups. A short record of historical struggles, due to cult issues, and a scrutiny of Qumran literature, corroborating the utmost significance of the Temple cult in that group, complement the study. The study is useful for a comprehension of Qumran literature and particularly of the system of thought of its authors and their approach to the biblical writings.

The Trinitarian testimony of the spirit : prosopological exegesis and the development of pre-Nicene pneumatology /

: In The Trinitarian Testimony of the Spirit , Kyle R. Hughes offers a new approach to the development of early Christian pneumatology by focusing on how Justin, Irenaeus, and Tertullian linked the Holy Spirit with testimony to the deity and lordship of the Father and the Son. Drawing extensively on recent studies of prosopological exegesis and divine testimony in the ancient world, Hughes demonstrates how these three pre-Nicene Christian writers utilized Scripture and the conventions of ancient rhetoric and exegesis to formulate a highly innovative approach to the Holy Spirit that would contribute to the identification of the Spirit as the third person of the Trinity.

Intangible spirits and graven images : the iconography of deities in the pre-Islamic Iranian world /

: Winner of the the Roman and Tania Ghirshman Prize 2015 by the French Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. This prize was established in 1973 by the donation made by Roman Ghirshman, one of the prominent French archaeologists of Pre-Islamic Iran. It is awarded annually for a publication in the field of Pre-Islamic Iranian Studies. In Intangible Spirits and Graven Images , Michael Shenkar investigates the perception of ancient Iranian deities and their representation in the Iranian cults. This ground-breaking study traces the evolution of the images of these deities, analyses the origin of their iconography, and evaluates their significance. Shenkar also explores the perception of anthropomorphism and aniconism in ancient Iranian religious imagery, with reference to the material evidence and the written sources, and reassesses the value of the Avestan and Middle Persian texts that are traditionally employed to illuminate Iranian religious imagery. In doing so, this book provides important new insights into the religion and culture of ancient Iran prior to the Islamic conquest.
