Previous scholarship on recent Muslim Qurʾanic exegesis has mostly focussed on modernising trends, usually remaining within the confines of a single language area. Transcending this hitherto dominating narrow focus, this book offers a comparative analysis of a body of contemporary Sunnite Qurʾanic commentaries from the Arab World, Indonesia and Turkey. It takes into account both the influence of specific local conditions and the common intellectual heritage they rely on. By paying special attention not only to new developments, but also to the embeddedness of contemporary Qurʾanic exegesis into a more than thousand-year-old intellectual tradition, it provides new insights into the religious, academic, political and social context of exegetical practice in the modern Islamic World. Die Forschung zur neueren muslimischen Koranexegese hat sich bislang weitgehend auf modernisierende Trends konzentriert und sich dabei zumeist innerhalb der Grenzen eines Sprachraums bewegt. Das vorliegende Buch bricht diesen verengenden Fokus auf, indem es einen Korpus von zeitgenössischen sunnitischen Korankommentaren aus der arabischen Welt, Indonesien und der Türkei vergleichend untersucht und der Frage nach ihrer Prägung durch spezifische lokale Bedingungen ebenso nachgeht wie der Analyse des gemeinsamen geistigen Erbes, auf das sie sich stützen. Indem es neben neueren exegetischen Entwicklungen der Einbettung zeitgenössischer Koranexegese in eine mehr als tausend Jahre alte ideengeschichtliche Tradition besondere Aufmerksamkeit widmet, liefert es neue Erkenntnisse über den religiösen, akademischen, politischen und gesellschaftlichen Kontext exegetischer Tätigkeit in der modernen islamischen Welt.

Since its inception, the study of Ḥadīth conducted by scholars trained in the Western academic tradition has been marked by sharp methodological debates. A focal issue is the origin and development of traditions on the advent of Islam. Scholars' verdicts on these traditions have ranged from "late fabrications without any historical value for the time concerning which the narrations purport to give information" to "early, accurately transmitted texts that allow one to reconstruct Islamic origins". Starting from previous contributions to the debate, the studies collected in this volume show that, by careful analysis of their texts and chains of transmission, the history of Muslim traditions can be reconstructed with a high degree of probability and their historicity assessed afresh.

The liturgical and theological dimensions have been virtually neglected, though they are vital for a proper understanding of his thought. Through a thorough reading of the original sources, including previously unexplored documents from various archives, this book takes an interdisciplinary approach to Van der Laan's theory. It brings together the different aspects of his work by studying both the liturgical-theological and architectural elements. On this basis the book offers a synthesis of the way in which Van der Laan was able to link earthly matter to the divine Mystery.

This volume deals with one of the oldest midrashim, the Eschatological Midrash from Qumran Cave 4. 4QMidrEschat, previously unknown, is preserved in at least two copies (4QFlorilegium, 4QCatena A) found at Qumran. A reconstruction of 4QFlorilegium and 4QCatena A is given in the first part of the book. The second part is a comparative analysis which shows that both manuscripts are copies of the same former work, 4QMidrEschat. The third part deals with the other exegetical Qumran texts, a definition of 4QMidrEschat's genre, its position among the Qumran literature, and its dating. 4QMidrEschat provides valuable information on Bible interpretation and eschatology among the Essenes in the first century BCE. 4QMidrEschat is of special significance because, according to recent studies, the Essenes are no longer to be regarded as a \'sect\', but as one of the most important Jewish groups of that time.

Mit seiner bahnbrechenden preisgekrönten Kritik des Wachstumsmodells plädiert Benjamin Ziemer für einen Paradigmenwechsel in der alttestamentlichen Literaturgeschichte. Er untersucht in detaillierten Einzelstudien einen repräsentativen Katalog empirischer Beispiele für Redaktion, vom Gilgamesch-Epos über das ägyptische Totenbuch bis hin zu biblischen Büchern (Chronik, Jeremia, Daniel, Esther) und Qumranschriften (Tempelrolle, Sektenregel). He shows that redactors who can be identified by external evidence never confined themselves to adding new material. Rather, they simultaneously adjusted or duplicated parts of the text, incorporated material from elsewhere or shortened their source texts. Until now, the bulk of redaction critical studies in Europe adhere to the presupposition of textual or literary ℗»growth℗± - assuming that multiple previous layers are to be found intact in the final texts. In this volume, Pieter van der Lugt offers a comprehensive analysis of the rhetorical structure of Isaiah. As in his previous studies on the Book of Job and the Psalter the author demonstrates that classical Hebrew poetry displays a well-defined structure consisting of balanced main parts (cantos) and subdivision into strophes. This rhetorical starting point is of crucial importance for the delimitation of the individual poems in Isaiah 40-48 and in many cases determines their interpretation. Subsequently, it is demonstrated that the successive compositions form well-defined and coherent cycles of poems.

Archaeology of the books of Samuel : the entangling of the textual and literary history /

The books of Samuel are a key link in the history of the biblical text in so much as they are found at a crossroad where different textual traditions encounter each other (MT, LXX, Qumran). Recent research tends to consider that the textual criticism has to take into account the literary aspects which characterise the most ancient transmission of the text. This assessment asks a variety of new exegetical questions considered in this volume: Does the comparative analysis of the textual witnesses permit proving the existence of distinct literary editions? Which are the criteria to deem the literary nature of the variants? Which ideological and theological motives governed the modifications of a previous text? Is it possible to establish a relative chronology between the putative editions? The study of the most ancient history of the text opens an archeology of the monument that are the books of Samuel. The search for their ancient foundations and the bringing to light of later modifications, the consideration both of the restorations and of the ruins of the textual edifice all throw new light on the final construct and its theological significance.
