The medieval reception of the Shahnama as a mirror for princes /

Nasrin Askari explores the medieval reception of Firdausī's Shāhnāma , or Book of Kings (completed in 1010 CE) as a mirror for princes. Through her examination of a wide range of medieval sources, Askari demonstrates that Firdausī's oeuvre was primarily understood as a book of wisdom and advice for kings and courtly elites. In order to illustrate the ways in which the Shāhnāma functions as a mirror for princes, Askari analyses the account about Ardashīr, the founder of the Sasanian dynasty, as an ideal king in the Shāhnāma . Within this context, she explains why the idea of the union of kingship and religion, a major topic in almost all medieval Persian mirrors for princes, has often been attributed to Ardashīr.

In September of 1701, events transpired in Naples that, through frequent retellings, became popularly known as "the conspiracy of the Prince of Macchia." Rapidly gaining fame, this apparently anonymous narrative was soon incorporated by different historians in their history of the transition years between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. But who was the initial bard or narrator, the town clerk or citizen who first gave testimony of this event by creating a Latin text of the story of the Prince of Macchia? Giambattista Vico was not among the claimants to the authorship of the fabulous story that changed the future of the Kingdom of Naples. Nevertheless, four scholars across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were themselves convinced, and managed to convince the intellectual world as well, that Vico, then a young teacher of rhetoric at the University of Naples, was indeed the source of this original Latin narration of this oft retold Neapolitan history. This book provides the original Latin text with a parallel translation, as well as historical context and analysis of both the text's authorship history and the account itself.

The Sixteen Kingdoms (304-439) saw Northern China become a multiethnic mosaic of states and statelets, one of which was Western Liang (400-422) in modern Gansu province at the edge of the Silk Roads. Its founder Li Hao was a Han settler on soil only recently annexed to the Empire. Here, immigrants ruled semi-nomadic locals, while elsewhere, non-Chinese ruling houses dealt with local Chinese elites. Their interaction, here seen close up in the life and times of Li Hao, had a lasting formative influence on Chinese culture and society for centuries to come.

Pasquill the Playne , the first English pasquinade, is a comic dialogue on the ethical challenges involved in counseling a prince. Of That Knowledge Which Maketh a Wise Man is a direct imitation of a Platonic dialogue, in which Plato's confrontation with the Sicilian tyrant Dionysius is given dramatic form. A third dialogue, The Defense of Good Women , is the first printed English book that argues for the moral and political equality of women to men. Included in the volume are a general introduction to Elyot's life and political career, extensive critical introductions to each of the texts, full recordings of the variations between printed editions, and substantive notes.

As part of its work in the Valley of the Kings, it relocated KV 5. The Dvādas Bhāv, A Mughal version of a Sanskrit story /

The Mughal emperor Akbar had a Sanskrit book called the Dvādas Bhāv translated to Farsi. Dismembered pages or painted folios from this manuscript were dispersed in auctions. This is the first time this book has been put back together and translated into English. The study reveals how the thirtheen paintings that interspersed this text were intrinsic to communicating its meaning. This was not the first or last Sanskrit work to be translated to Farsi or be illustrated for a Muslim monarch in Hindustan. The Mughals (and some of the Sultans before them) recognized the significance of Indian knowledge traditions. This book however, provides insight into what went into such translations. Who decided which text should be translated and what governed the decisions?

The role of Murshidabad, the capital of Bengal in the eighteenth century, in the political, social and economic life of the province is now almost lost to public memory. But the history of Murshidabad during the period is indeed a saga of romantic as well as tragic events which is unique. It's a pity that most works on Murshidabad, though commendable, were written a long time back. No doubt, quite a few excellent books and articles on the subject were published in the last several decades but unfortunately they deal with only certain aspects, and were not comprehensive histories of Murshidabad. So it was imperative to write a book covering all the aspects of the former capital. Here the author has tried to narrate an authentic history of Murshidabad with the help of evidence, both qualitative and quantitative, collected from various archives and libraries in Europe and India for more than four decades. He establishes in the book that it was the time of the Nawabi regime in the first half of the eighteenth century when Bengal witnessed its 'golden age'. He also explains critically and elaborately the activities of the three merchant-princes, and gives a new interpretation of the reasons behind the Plassey conspiracy and the subsequent revolution. The volume comes up with interesting facts about the Begums of Murshidabad, and finally, makes a critical analysis of Murshidabad's trade, industry, and economy on the one hand, and the society, culture and architecture on the other - all of which makes it a significant contribution on the subject.
