Another Athanasius : four Sahidic homilies attributed to Athanasius of Alexandria : two homilies...
:
"Many Coptic literary texts are circulated under the name of Athanasius of Alexandria, the Alexandrian Archbishop and Theologian (ca. 296/298-2 May 373). Although there are strong evidences that most of these texts are falsely attributed to him, they are of extreme importance for the study of Coptic Christianity. The four homilies, edited and translated in this two volumes book, present 'Another Athanasius' to those who knew the history of their pseudo-Author. The homilies present Athanasius as a close friend of Pachomius, the Archimandrite of Upper Egypt (ca. 292-348). A visit of Pachomius to Alexandria is described in details. One homily relates about Athanasius' escape to Upper Egypt. Another homily contains fanciful acts of the Nicene council. The last homily presents Athanasius as a preacher while giving a long talk on the Christian household. This corpus of texts reveals the mental image of Athanasius in the Coptic mentality through centuries after his death."--

Was there, in different periods of Egyptian history, a clearly defined political and cultural western border? How was the western limit of Egyptian territory perceived and experienced by the central power and local populations? Keeping these questions in mind, the proceedings of the international conference held in Cairo on 2-3 December 2017 explore the western margins of Egypt along four lines: 1) definition, conception, representation; 2) occupation, control, administration; 3) economy; 4) populations, networks, religion. They allow us to sketch a portrait of a key region of Egypt from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Once the phase of territorial fixation of the Egyptian state was completed, the low population density in the Western Delta and the absence of a real threat did not encourage the definition and defense of an actual western border. However, the arrival of new Libyan groups at the gates of Egypt during the Ramesside period was a turning point. The emergence of the Saite Dynasty placed this region in a new dynamic--that of border with the Greek world and pioneer front--which prefigured the development of this territory under the Ptolemies. During the Roman period, Egypt was part of an empire that extended much further west and whose decision-making center was outside the country, which changed the status of the western limit. Still, the nomadic incursions into the Great Oasis at the end of the period show that the question of the frontier remained an issue. This issue continued after the Arab conquest when Egypt became again part of a vast empire.

India's Asia-Pacific Engagement : Impulses and Imperatives /
:
India's Asia-Pacifc engagement, now in its third decade, has become an integral and irreversible plank of our foreign policy. This volume seeks to provide a new and unique perspective to the discourse on the evolving Look East Policy, updating, assessing, critically evaluating and analyzing developments beyond its first two decades and looking into the impulses and imperatives of India's growing and deepening engagement with the larger and rapidly changing geo-political space of the Asia-Pacifc region, which some now have begun to describe as the Indo-Pacifc. The essays in this compilation, written by former practitioners and some eminent experts, cover various aspects of our evolving engagement, going beyond the ASEAN geo-political space and the hitherto traditional areas of focus, importantly now covering strategic, security, political, economic, cultural and the diaspora aspects of our enlarged engagement, also suggesting a road map and specifc next steps for enduring partnership in the coming decade. The personal insights, analysis and candid perspectives offered by the contributors makes this volume unique and one of its kind.

The classic Jewish philosophers : from Saadia through the Renaissance /
:
This book provides a standard reference of the major medieval Jewish philosophers, as well as an eminently readable narrative of the course of medieval Jewish philosophical thought, presented as a response to the spiritual-intellectual challenges facing Judaism in that period. The accounts of Saadia, Bahya, Halevi, Maimonides, and Crescas are among the fullest available in English. Other thinkers discussed in depth include Israeli, Ibn Gabirol, Gersonides, and Albo; the work also includes capsule summaries of Bar Hiyya, Falaquera, Albalag, Duran, Abravanel and others. All of the summaries place the philosophical thought of these important thinkers in the context of the historical challenges and religious concerns of their age. This book is also available in paperback.

Buddhism and transgression : the appropriation of Buddhism in the contemporary West /
:
If Buddhism is to remain relevant to the contemporary era, through providing effective solutions to the proliferating and protean discursive problems encountered by its present-day practitioners, it cannot continue to ignore the role of discourse in the formation of subjectivity. In the interest of problematizing such 'ignorance,' this book explores the potential interface between Foucaultian discourse analysis and the development of an indigenous rationale for the practice of contemporary Western Buddhism, along with the growing significance of such a rationale for 'traditional' Buddhism in an era dominated by disciplinary/bio-power. Through doing so, this book radically re-conceptualizes the role of Buddhism in the world today by linking Buddhist practice with acts of discursive transgression.

Folk-Tales of Kashmir /
:
Kashmir has a long history stretching back to prehistory, where many caves and other archaeological findings were discovered. The region's name is found in Mahabharata and other Puranic texts, including the most famous Rajatarangini by Kalhana. Also, Sanskrit commentaries written by popular commentators Abhinavagupta, Vasudeva, Utpala, and others contributed immensely to the history of Kashmiri literature in the early medieval period. During the advent of Islamic rule, many Kashmiri writers, such as Lal Ded, Habba Khatoon, Nund Rishi, Rupa Bhavani, etc., wrote Sufi, mystical, romantic, and devotional prose, which became the source of rich Kashmiri literary tradition. This book is a collection of 64 different Kashmiri folk tales from different parts of Kashmir, which were composed during the pre-modern period.
