The Arabic manuscript tradition : a glossary of technical terms and bibliography /

: Covering the entire spectrum of Arabic manuscripts, and especially the handwritten book, this book consists of a glossary of technical terms and a bibliography. The technical terms, collected from a variety of sources, embrace a vast range of topics dealing with the making and reading (studying) of Arabic manuscripts. They include: the Arabic scripts, penmanship, writing materials and implements, the make-up of the codex, copying and correction, decoration and bookbinding. A similar coverage is reflected in the bibliography. In view of the fact that, as yet, there is no concise monograph on Arabic manuscripts in the English language, this book is an important contribution to this field. And, since Arabic manuscripts represent an enormous resource for research, this work is an indispensable reference for all students of Islamic civilization.

Prophets, gods and kings in Sirat Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan : an intertextual reading of an Egyptian popular epic /

: This book is a literary, intertextual study of an Egyptian popular epic. In this innovative study, Helen Blatherwick investigates how various sources, including Islamic qiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʾ ('tales of the prophets'), Pharaonic, Graeco-Roman and Coptic Egyptian myths and narratives, and recensions of the Alexander Romance function as intertexts within Sīrat Sayf . Blatherwick argues that these intertexts are deployed as narrative devices which are readily recognisable to the story's audience, and that they are significant carriers of meaning and theme. Crucially, these intertexts also interact within Sīrat Sayf to bring a conceptual continuity to its discussion of kingship and society that stretches from this late-medieval epic back to ancient Egyptian narratives.

The birth of indology as an Islamic science : Al-Biruni's treatise on yoga psychology /

: In The Birth of Indology as an Islamic Science Mario Kozah closely examines the pioneering contribution by Bīrūnī (d. circa 1048) to the study of comparative religion in his major work on India. Kozah concludes that a process of Islamisation is employed through a meticulous systematization of Hindu beliefs into one "Indian religion", preceding by almost a millennium the earliest definitions of Hinduism by nineteenth-century European Orientalists. This formulation of Hinduism draws on Bīrūnī's interpretation of Yoga psychology articulated in the Kitāb Bātanjal , his Arabic translation of the Yoga-Sūtra of Patañjali. Bīrūnī's Islamic reading of Hinduism relies on certain common denominators that he identifies as being of fundamental importance. In the case of Hinduism he identifies metempsychosis as its unifying banner.

Jewish education from Antiquity to the Middle Ages : studies in honour of Philip S. Alexander /

: In Jewish Education from Antiquity to the Middle Ages fifteen scholars offer specialist studies on Jewish education from the areas of their expertise. This tightly themed volume in honour of Philip S. Alexander has some essays that look at individual manuscripts, some that consider larger literary corpora, and some that are more thematically organised. Jewish education has been addressed largely as a matter of the study house, the bet midrash. Here a richer range of texts and themes discloses a wide variety of activity in several spheres of Jewish life. In addition, some notable non-Jewish sources provide a wider context for the discourse than is often the case.

The Qur'an, morality and critical reason : the essential Muhammad Shahrur /

: This book presents the work and ideas of the Syrian writer Muhammad Shahrur to the English-speaking world. Shahrur is at the moment the most innovative intellectual thinker in the Arab Middle East. Often described as the 'Martin Luther of Islam,' he offers a liberal, progressive reading of Islam that aims to counter the influences of religious fundamentalism and radical politics. Shahrur's innovative interpretation of the Qur'an offers groundbreaking new ideas, based on his conviction that centuries of historical Islam, including scholarship in the traditional Islamic religious sciences, have obscured or even obliterated the Qur'an's progressive and revolutionary message. That message is one that has endured through each period of human history in which Islam has existed, encouraging Muslims to apply the most contemporary perspective available to interpret the Qur'an's meaning.

Muṣṭafá Alī's Epic deeds of artists : a critical edition of the earliest Ottoman text about the calligraphers and painters of the Islamic world /

: The earliest known Ottoman literary source about the lives and works of calligraphers, painters, limners, and book-binders of the Ottoman and Persianate worlds, Mustafa ʿÂli's (1541-1600) Epic Deeds of Artists (1587), was hitherto considered to be primarily a biographic dictionary. Based on a comprehensive reading of the descriptive and analytic tools of ʿÂli's biographical writings as well as his passionately penned personal reflections on sixteenth-century attitudes toward art and artists, this critical edition by Esra Akın-Kıvanç brings to the fore the significance of Epic Deeds not only as a guide to the connoisseurs and aficionados of the time, but also as a fascinating commentary by a prominent intellectual on the spiritual meaning and material value of art.

Watching the Virtues : Playbills, Drama and the Teaching of Civic Virtue in the Jesuit Theatre of Poland-Lithuania /

: In Watching the Virtues, Jolanta Rzegocka offers an account of the Jesuit theatre in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth through the playbills, which record an astonishing variety of story designs and tales crafted for the stage. Her study reveals the profound role of Jesuit theatre (1564-1733) in the education of Polish-Lithuanian youth, mostly of Catholic but also of other faiths, aiming to instil virtues within the political and social fabric of the Commonwealth. Drawing from over 800 playbills, college playbooks, diaries as well as newly uncovered plays, Rzegocka paints a picture of a theatre deeply engaged with contemporary political and moral issues. She demonstrates how Jesuit theatre extended beyond educational institutions, influencing broader political discussions and public life, particularly regarding issues of authority, faith, and ethical behaviour. The study presents as a cultural phenomenon the diffusion through Jesuit theatre of Anglo-Scottish themes and narratives in Poland-Lithuania and discusses a hitherto unknown play about Thomas More (1765).

Girirāj Kiśor's Yātrāeṁ : A Hindi Novel Analysed /

: This book is one of the first to present a detailed analytic study of a novel written in Hindi. Its in-depth analysis of the complete text of Kiśor's Yātrāeṁ (1971) is based on narratology and a study of connotations and cultural background. The extensive introduction - especially into narratology - and the inclusion of the integral Hindi text of the novel together with a Hindi-English glossary and word index allow the reader, not only to follow the analysis in all its detail but also to use the book as a practical example of how modern Hindi prose literature may be analysed. Yātrāeṁ is no exception to a trend in modern Hindi novel writing to focus on individual experience and on love and sexual relationships, but its concentration on the way in which a man experiences his wedding night and honeymoon lends it a special character. It is the groom himself who narrates and interprets the couple's lack of success in fully consummating the marriage. Since he is personally involved in the events, his account is highly subjective, and it is left to the reader to find out what could be the real cause of the events. Reviews of Yātrāeṁ propose diverse interpretations, which are all based on intuitive readings. This book shows how a systematic analysis of the text leads to a different interpretation. The analysis highlights how conscious and unconscious ideas about gender roles, activeness and passiveness, dominance, passion, control, and balance determine the man's behaviour towards the woman. As observed in the Introduction, the philosophy of disinterested action as taught by the Bhagavadgītā is found to be relevant even today.

Socio-economic Relations in Ptolemaic Pathyris : A Network Analytical Approach to a Bilingual Community. Volume 2. /

: This study tackles pertinent questions about daily life and socio-economic interactions in the late Ptolemaic town of Pathyris (186-88 BCE) through an empirically grounded network analysis of 428 Greek and Demotic documents associated with 21 archives from the site. The author moves beyond traditional boundaries of Egyptological and Papyrological research by means of an innovative and interdisciplinary methodology - zigzagging back and forth between archaeological field survey, close reading of ancient texts, formal methods of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and explanatory theories and concepts borrowed from economics and other social sciences. This is volume 2 of a two-volume set.

The Revenue Manual of Rajasthan (Seventeenth to Nineteenth Centuries) /

: The Revenue Manual of Rajasthan reveals the significance of this archival source material, particularly arhsatta, a distinctive revenue record of Rajasthan in general and Amber, afterward designated as Jaipur, in particular. On the whole, the arhsatta document covers such diverse and vital subjects as agriculture, environment, banking and accounting systems, forms of peasant protests, crime and punishment, estimation of population, pasture lands, animals, rural-urban taxation, aspects of social history and useful evidence on urban history. Jibraeil has edited the Arhsatta Mujmil Qasba Sanganer, keeping in view the growing interest of researchers in the archival as well as literary sources of Rajasthan's history. The documents employ indigenous terms and personalized words which make their meaning difficult to grasp as well as to decipher. They demand close attention and practice. Keeping this in mind, the editing of the document with annotations will certainly help researchers. The work also includes a comprehensive glossary of terms used in arhsatta, a chart on the values in the form of appendices, and meanings of Persian and Rajasthani words as footnotes. Explanatory note on currencies used and their notations in the document further enhance the value of this work. In addition, the transcription of the arhsatta record is an invaluable tool which will help the researcher to read and understand the document more easily.

A Philosopher's Apprentice : In Karl Popper's Workshop.

: Both a Popper biography and an autobiography, Agassi's A Philosopher's Apprentice tells the riveting story of his intellectual formation in 1950s London, a young brilliant philosopher struggling with an intellectual giant - father, mentor, and rival, all at the same time. His subsequent rebellion and declaration of independence leads to a painful break, never to be completely healed. No other writer has Agassi's psychological insight into Popper, and no other book captures like this one the intellectual excitement around the Popper circle in the 1950s and the struggles of the 1960s and 1970s - personal, academic, political, all important philosophically. Agassi's Popper - whether one agrees with it or not - is an enormous contribution to scholarship. This second revised edition includes also Popper's and Agassi's last correspondence and, in a postscript it shows Agassi leafing through Popper's archives, reaching a sort of reconciliation, an appropriate ending to the drama. A must read." - Malachi Hacohen, Duke University.

History in the Public Domain /

: History is a hot topic in popular politics of the public domain. Pressures from different kinds of ideological positions and politics of identities of various kinds put serious constraints on the practice and writing of history. Despite the challenges, scholarship has continued to grow. Current historiographical thrusts illustrate how a whole range of themes and issues are dealt with by professional historians from a variety of perspectives with reference to sources and evidence. For instance, issues relating to the complex interactions between religion and political culture are no longer being swept under the carpet. This collection of short essays and extended discussions on current research aims to intervene in public debates on what exactly happened in history. Given the situation, attempts of this kind can possibly help in somewhat bridging the wide gap between serious academic research and misplaced assumptions of popular histories. Much as historians are accused of merely speaking to themselves (and boring others), they need to be taken seriously when intervening in public debates using specialized historical methods and practices. Historical research conducted in universities can inform popular debates in newspapers, television channels, social media, and roadside dhabas for that matter, to lift the discussion to an informed intellectual plank and to bring about historical literacy and civility in the public domain.
