About 280 AD C. Iulius Romanus wrote a large work on Latin grammar. Parts of this work were later incorporated in the Ars grammatica of Flavius Sosipater Charisius. Romanus' Introduction to his list of adverbs is unique because of his approach of the subject. With the help of many rhetorical means he weaves together an intricate argument, which is completely different from the usual treatments of the adverb. This unique character was never noticed previously. The first chapters of this book deal with Charisius and Romanus in general and the Introduction in particular. A new edition with translation and commentary follows, completed by a discussion of the annotations of Cauchius made about 1540 from a manuscript now lost.

This volume is a companion to the author's new Loeb edition of Seneca's tragedies (vol. 1, 2002; volume 2, 2004). It offers reasons for his editorial choices, and explains his interpretations of the text as reflected in his translation. The volume is intended to be read alongside Otto Zwierlein's Kritische Kommentar , published in 1986. Prior studies of incubation have approached it from a history of religions perspective, with a view to historically reconstruct the actual practice of incubation in ancient Near East. However, this approach has proven unfruitful, not due to the dearth of relevant data, but because of the confusion with regard to the definition of the term incubation. Suggesting a way out of this impasse in previous scholarship, this book proposes to read the so-called "incubation" texts from the perspective of incubation as a literary device, namely, as a type-scene. It applies Nagler's definition of a type-scene to a literary analysis of two Ugaritic mythical texts, the Aqhatu and Kirta stories, and one biblical story, the Hannah story.

A classicist, philosopher, and poet, Poul Martin Møller was an important figure in the Danish Golden Age. The traumatic event of the death of his wife led him to think more profoundly about the question of the immortality of the soul. In 1837 he published his most important philosophical treatise, "Thoughts on the Possibility of Proofs of Human Immortality," presented here in English for the first time. It was read and commented upon by the leading figures of the Golden Age, such as Søren Kierkegaard. It proved to be the last important work that Møller wrote before his death in March of 1838 at the age of 43.

For more than a century, critics of the Aeneid have assumed that all or most of its episodes must propound something about Aeneas and his mission to found the Roman people, and through them about Rome and Augustus; whether that is their positive aspects, or their brutality and destructiveness, or the contrast between the public "voice" of their achievements and the private "voice" of the suffering they cause. This book argues that this assumption is wrong; the Aeneid 's main purpose was to present a series of emotionally moving episodes, especially pathetic ones. This book shows that the Aeneid makes more sense when regarded primarily as a series of emotion-arousing episodes than as expressing a pro-Aeneas, anti-Aeneas or two voices message. That is how it was regarded into the nineteenth century and that is what the ancient Greeks and Romans assumed was the main purpose of literature.

Freemasonry is generally regarded a male phenomenon. Yet, both before 1723 and since 1744, women were initiated as well. This book is about the rituals, used for the initiation of women in the Adoption Lodges, since the middle of the 18th century. It describes their contents, roots and creation before reviewing and conceptualising their development in the past three centuries. It analyses the different families of rituals within the Adoption Rite, and gives an overview of specific developments, showing how the rituals were adapted to their changing contexts. Apart from its relevance for the history of Freemasonry in general and the Adoption Rite in particular, the book also writes a hitherto unknown chapter of women's history. Of particular interest for the history of feminism is the chapter about the 20th century, which could only be written now that the documents concerning it, which had been moved to Moscow in 1945, had been returned in 2000.

The great Isaiah scroll (1QIsaa) : a new edition /

This edition comprises new transcriptions of the great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaᵃ), with photographs and a bibliography. The transcriptions were created from the leather scroll itself which is housed in the Shrine of the Book of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and from three different sets of photographs. The transcriptions were then checked against enhanced computer images of the John C. Trever negatives, which were scanned into digitized format, manipulated and enhanced to illuminate difficult-to-read characters. The goal of this edition of the transcriptions is to represent the text with the greatest possible accuracy; most emendations by different scribal hands are indicated. It does not, however, indicate all the technical details regarding the corrections. The photographs belong to the S.J. Schweig and the John C. Trever collections. The 25-page bibliography pertains to scholarly materials which deal with 1QIsaᵃ.
