Annaeana tragica : notes on the text of Seneca's tragedies /

This volume is a companion to the author's new Loeb edition of Seneca's tragedies (vol. 1, 2002; volume 2, 2004). It offers reasons for his editorial choices, and explains his interpretations of the text as reflected in his translation. Hercules Oetanus and Octavia , now generally regarded as imitations of Senecan drama, are both included. The volume is intended to be read alongside Otto Zwierlein's Kritische Kommentar , published in 1986. In the intervening years there has been much new work pertaining to Seneca's text, including full-scale editions with commentary on individual plays, such as Keulen's Troades , Töchterle's Oedipus and Ferri's Octavia . Annaeana Tragica seeks to supplement and advance Zwierlein's work in the light of this new material. An appendix reviews the scholarly controversy concerning the anapaestic odes of these plays, and offers fresh evidence relevant to the issue.

A classicist, philosopher, and poet, Poul Martin Møller was an important figure in the Danish Golden Age. The traumatic event of the death of his wife led him to think more profoundly about the question of the immortality of the soul. In 1837 he published his most important philosophical treatise, "Thoughts on the Possibility of Proofs of Human Immortality," presented here in English for the first time. It was read and commented upon by the leading figures of the Golden Age, such as Søren Kierkegaard. It proved to be the last important work that Møller wrote before his death in March of 1838 at the age of 43.

The compendium known as "Tabakât al-umam" is derived in part from the ancients, or from earlier writers like al-Fărăb̄̌. It is sometimes regarded as a continuation of Ibn Hazm's "Físal," by his disciple, Sâ'id ibn, al-Andalusi, to whom the work is ascribed. Fragments of it were included in the works, of Ibn Sa'ād, 'Alī ibn Mūsā, al-Maghribī, and Ibn al-Kiftī, whose Akhbăr al-hukamā' may be the same work. Cf. Enzyk. d. Scholars often explain Hebrews' relative silence regarding Jesus' resurrection by emphasizing the author's appeal to Yom Kippur's two key moments-the sacrificial slaughter and the high priest's presentation of blood in the holy of holies-in his distinctive portrayal of Jesus' death and heavenly exaltation. The writer's depiction of Jesus as the high priest whose blood effected ultimate atonement appears to be modeled upon these two moments. Such a typology discourages discrete reflection on Jesus' resurrection. Drawing on contemporary studies of Jewish sacrifice (which note that blood represents life, not death), parallels in Jewish apocalyptic literature, and fresh exegetical insights, this volume demonstrates that Jesus' embodied, resurrected life is crucial for the high-priestly Christology and sacrificial soteriology developed in Hebrews.

Her study reveals the profound role of Jesuit theatre (1564-1733) in the education of Polish-Lithuanian youth, mostly of Catholic but also of other faiths, aiming to instil virtues within the political and social fabric of the Commonwealth. Drawing from over 800 playbills, college playbooks, diaries as well as newly uncovered plays, Rzegocka paints a picture of a theatre deeply engaged with contemporary political and moral issues. She demonstrates how Jesuit theatre extended beyond educational institutions, influencing broader political discussions and public life, particularly regarding issues of authority, faith, and ethical behaviour.
