Bibliography of the Indonesian Revolution : Publications from 1942 to 1994 /

Interest in the Indonesian Revolution, a period of crucial importance in the history of modern Indonesia, continues unabated, as reflected in this bibliography. The bibliography lists more than 6,000 titles related to the Indonesian Revolution (1945-1949), the West Irian issue (1950-1962), and the South Moluccan question (1950-1951) and its aftermath. It is the first bibliography of such depth and scope, and purports to offer a complete listing of scholarly works, including unpublished theses, as well as journalistic accounts, pamphlets, memoirs, and fictional works. Most of the works listed are in Indonesian, Dutch, or English, but relevant works in French, German, Russian, Japanese, and other languages have also been included. An introduction allows a first acquaintance with the mass of publications listed. The titles are arranged by period, and subdivided by language. Indexes of authors, of subjects, of persons, and of geographical names make it possible to access the titles in more detail.

The edited volume Both Muslim and European: Diasporic and Migrant Identities of Bosniaks scrutinizes some of the new aspects of the Bosniak history and identity and connects them with the experience of migration and diaspora formation. Apologies are ubiquitous in contemporary societies, yet their meanings and functions are rarely straightforward. Online Apologies in Japanese provides a comprehensive account of how three Japanese expressions commonly considered apologetic ( gomen, su(m)imasen and mōshiwake arimasen ) work in a data set collected from the Q&A website Yahoo! Chiebukuro. The focus is on three variables: their pragmatic functions, the discursive strategies they co-occur with, and the events and behaviours that warrant them. Theoretically, this book introduces a combination of established and emerging approaches in the field of pragmatics. Methodologically, it brings together corpus linguistics and discourse analysis for the study of Japanese. Clause combining in ancient Greek narrative discourse : the distribution of subclauses and participial clauses in Xenophon's Hellenica and Anabasis /

This study describes the usage of subclauses and participial clauses in Xenophon's Hellenica and Anabasis , with additional examples from other texts, using a text grammar-oriented approach, which can map more factors underlying the distribution of these clauses, and offers a more satisfactory explanation of a larger number of instances than is possible using the traditional sentence-level approach. The discourse-analytic description of the different clause types focuses on how relations are coded by means of subordinating conjunctions, the differences in form and function as discourse boundary markers between preposed, sentence-initially placed subclauses and participles, and the differences between clause types with respect to the information flow in on-going discourse. The discussion of many examples from the work of Xenophon makes this book interesting for both linguists and classical philologists.

Institutional Violence /

Violence can be physical and psychological. It can characterize personal actions, forms of group activity, and abiding social and political policy. This book includes all of these aspects within its focus on institutional forms of violence. Institution is also a broad category, ranging from formal arrangements such as the military, the criminal code, the death penalty and prison system, to more amorphous but systemic situations indicated by parenting, poverty, sexism, work, and racism. Violence is as complex as the human beings who resort to it; its institutional forms pervade our relational lives. We are all participants in it as victims and perpetrators. The chapters in this book were written in the hope that violence can be explicated, even if not fully understood, and that such clarification can help us in devising less violent forms of living, even if it does not lead to its total abolition. The studies bring new aspects of violence to light and offer a number of suggestions for its remedy.
