Reaching for the sky : religious education from Christian and Islamic perspectives /

Young people have to make their own way in the world; they have to give meaning to and find meaning in their lives. This is the field of religious education, which is provided by parents, religious leaders, or teachers of religion and worldviews. One of the most important challenges is to educate children in their own religion, emphasizing that religion's tolerant and peaceful side and to teach children about the beliefs of other traditions. An even more important challenge is to teach them to live together in peace and justice. This volume deals with religious education in Christianity and Islam in specific countries. Scholars in religious education need to know more about the ways in which Muslims and Christians perceive and practice their respective forms of religious education and explore methods that help young people develop their religious identity in accordance with their tradition-and also meet with comrades from other traditions, as the two young Gambian and Dutch women shown on the cover do. This volume explores the field of Christian and Islamic education. Muslim and Christian scholars from Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Indonesia, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands describe various aspects of religious education at school, at home, in the mosque and church, via the media and in peer groups. The papers were presented and discussed at an authors' conference at VU University Amsterdam, organized in close collaboration between the staff of its Centre of Islamic Theology and other scholars in religious education, and the Islamic Universities League in Cairo. The authors describe actual processes of education, reflect on religious identity formation and respect for other people and the influences from home, school, mosque, and church, the media and "the street."

The volume contains works showing the comprehensive contribution of Kazimierz Twardowski, the founder of the Lvov-Warsaw School, to the European analytical movement. The readers of the volume will learn, among other things, how the theoretically fertile distinction between act and product introduced by Twardowski turned out to be. Furthermore, this volume illustrates the importance of Twardowski's defense of alethic absolutism. Finally, readers will learn about the conceptual tools developed by Twardowski, enabling the explanation of the phenomenon of still lingering prejudices, as well as Twardowski's conception of rationality, and about his attitude towards formal and informal logic as well as logical education. An undoubted novelty of the volume is that it provides a kind of parametrization of Twardowski's continuously increasing position in global philosophy by referring to the complete bibliography of works by and on Twardowski in European languages (other than his native language) up until 2020.

Rabbi Elliot N. Dorff, the Sol and Anne Dorff Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Rector of American Jewish University in Los Angeles, is one of today's leading Jewish ethicists. In Ethnography from the Mission Field: The Hoffmann Collection of Cultural Knowledge Joubert and others offer a translated and annotated edition of the 24 ethnographic articles by missionary Carl Hoffmann and his local interlocutors published between the years 1913 and 1958. The edition is introduced by a historic contextualisation using a cultural historical approach to analyse the contexts in which Hoffmann's ethnographic texts were produced. Making use of historical material and Hoffmann's own words from personal diaries and letters, the authors convincingly draw the attention to the discursive context in which the texts annotated in this book had been compiled. In a concluding chapter the book traces the captivating developments of the orthography of Northern Sotho through Hoffmann's texts over almost half a century. ʿAbd al-Ḥusayn Khān Lisān al-Salṭanah Sipihr (1869-1933), also known by his honorific title of Malik al-Muwarrikhīn, was an historian, a court official, a chronicler, a politician, a writer of many books in various disciplines, and an Iranian newspaperman of the first hour. Entering the secretarial ranks of the court at the age of eighteen, he held various positions of trust under Nāṣir al-Dīn Shāh (d. 1313/1896) and Muẓaffar al-Dīn Shāh (d. 1907). After Muẓaffar al-Dīn Shāh's death he worked in several official capacities, lastly as head of the religious endowments of Kashan. Unable to make a living as a publisher, he spent the last part of his life in education. He died after a short illness in Tehran, aged 64. This volume contains his thusfar unpublished chronicle of the reign of Muẓaffar al-Dīn Shāh. His reports on Iran's internal affairs are especially interesting since he was a close witness of most of these events. 2 vols; volume 2.
