In Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories in the Early Modern Iberian World: Narratives of Fear and Hatred , François Soyer offers the first detailed historical analysis of antisemitic conspiracy theories in Spain, Portugal and their overseas colonies between 1450 and 1750. These conspiracy theories accused Jews and conversos , the descendants of medieval Jewish converts to Christianity, of deadly plots and blamed them for a range of social, religious, military and economic problems. Ultimately, many Iberian antisemitic conspiracy theorists aimed to create a 'moral panic' about the converso presence in Iberian society, thereby justifying the legitimacy of ethnic discrimination within the Church and society. Moreover, they were also exploited by some churchmen seeking to impose an idealized sense of communal identity upon the lay faithful.

In undertaking a comprehensive literary analysis, incorporating both the drama and the sayings together, Bledsoe shows that Ahiqar's didactic impulse is founded on a sense of uncertainty about life, offering advice for those in times of distress, much like the titular character himself. While Ahiqar shares many features with instructional literature like Proverbs, the ambiguous cosmic and social order imagined in the text resonate more strongly with the likes of Qoheleth or Job. Bledsoe also takes seriously the Elephantine context, suggesting that the social and political ethic evinced by the work would have resonated strongly with the Judean community in Achaemenid Egypt.

Why do terse Hebrew Bible narratives bother to mention clothing? Often presented without description nor overt contribution to plot, why were these references retained in the final forms of these stories? Through the use of a multifaceted analytical toolkit this study exhaustively examines the five clothing pericopes in the book of Joshua. Embedding each text in its various layers of context, you will observe a trope of evolution of identity carried along by sartorial language and discover the unobtrusive contributions made to characterisation, such as Joshua's divergence from Moses in removing a single sandal to demonstrate the acquiescence of his rights and his posture of subservience as YHWH's conquest commander. Close reading of each text is supported by colourised clausal-analysis charts which enable an appreciation of the rich information encoded in the narratively significant disjunctive Hebrew Masoretic accents.

This volume studies the seven psalms that were performed at the fundamental daily ritual of the Jerusalem Temple in the late Second Temple period (Psalms 24, 48, 82, 94, 81, 93, 92). Theatrum Arbitri is a literary study dealing with the possible influence of Roman comic drama (comedies of Plautus and Terence, theatre of the Greek and Roman mimes, and fabula Atellana ) on the surviving fragments of Petronius' Satyrica . The theatrical assessment of this novel is carried out at the levels of plot-construction, characterization, language, and reading of the text as if it were the narrative equivalent of a farcical staged piece with the theatrical structure of a play produced before an audience. The analysis follows the order of each of the scenes in the novel. The reader will also find a brief general commentary on the less discussed scenes of the Satyrica , and a comprehensive account of the theatre of the mimes and its main features.

In this study a new view is given on the city-plan of ancient Herculaneum, by combining the evidence from the ancient writers, the 19th century explorations and the analysis of the measurements of the excavated house-blocks ('insulae'). Furthermore, it contains a detailed examination of the southernmost insulae III and IV, with surprising results. First of all the allotment of these two insulae is made visible, which gives way to a discussion about the division of land in pre-Roman Campania. Furthermore, the author distinguishes some new types of houses, which differ from the already known atrium buildings.
