Human rights or religious rules? /

: The relation between religion and human rights is a contested one, as they appear to compete with one another. Religion is often considered to represent a tradition of heteronomy and subordination in premodern times. Human rights emerged from early modern and modern times and stand for principles like human dignity, autonomy, equality. The first question in this book is how to define religion, its meaning, functions and structures, and how to study it. The second question is how to understand religion from its relation with human rights in such a way that justice is done to both religion and human rights. These questions are dealt with using a historical and systematic approach. The third question is what the impact of religion might be on attitudes towards human rights, id est human rights culture. For an answer, empirical research is reported among about 1000 students, Christians, Muslims, and nonreligious, at the end of secondary and the beginning of tertiary education in the Netherlands.

Yearbook of the European Convention on Human Rights/Annuaire de la convention europeenne des droits de l'homme, Volume 49 A /

: For victims of human rights violations, human rights defenders are like a beacon of hope shining through the darkness of oppression. Through their work for the protection and realisation of human rights, injustices by authorities are unmasked, public awareness is raised and democratic control is exercised. Their devotion to fighting human rights violations, often at the risk of their own lives, cannot be praised too highly. The colloquy "Protecting and supporting human rights defenders in Europe", held in Strasbourg under the auspices of the Council of Europe, proved an ideal opportunity for frank and constructive exchanges between representatives of civil society and governments from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe on the obstacles encountered by human rights defenders in their work and the responses by the Council of Europe and other international actors to their concerns. This volume contains all the contributions to the plenary session as well as the reports from the three workshops.

: Applying universal themes, this book analyses the discrimination faced by and the (re)construction of the Buraku people during Japan's modernization. State and capital have created the ongoing plight of the Buraku. This book demonstrates that Buraku discrimination has been a springboard for domination, both during and after Japan's colonial rule in Asia and has been an important function of governance in Japan. Buraku discrimination is reproduced in both cities and towns, forcing many Buraku people to suffer silently. To combat this situation, there are Buraku resistance movements, studied in depth here.

Dalits in India : Religion as a Source of Bondage or Liberation with Special Reference to Christians /

: The present work studies the subject of religion as a source of bondage or liberation with special reference to the casteless Christians. It deals with the Dalits in India in general, the history of their problems, and the basic question of their identity. The discussion of their history also includes the role of religion and how far it has acted as an agent of bondage or liberation for the Dalits. The religions which are referred to in this work are Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Lingayatism (Veerasaivism), Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Zoroastrianism and Baha'i religion. This work discusses in detail the role of Hindu religion with special reference to the caste system. Besides Hindu religion, detailed references are made to Christian religion or faith with emphasis on casteless Christians. Christian Dalits are casteless because they belong to a community who in their pre-Dalit state were casteless and classless people. Also Christians are supposed to be casteless, because Christian religion is considered to be above caste or class.
