"Since Mohammed VI's accession to the throne in 1999, Morocco has pursued a continental foreign policy. The Kingdom aspires to be recognized as an emerging African power both in its identity and in its space of projection. In order to satisfy these ambitions, the diplomatic apparatus is developing and modernising, while a singular role identity is emerging around the notion of the "golden mean", supported by a system of discursive legitimisation as well as by the conduct of an "indirect strategy". This study presents, on an empirical level, the conditions of the elaboration and conduct of this African policy, and analyses, on a theoretical level, the evolution of the identity of the Moroccan power with regard to this African policy. Depuis l'avènement du règne de Mohammed VI en 1999, le Maroc déploie une politique étrangère continentale. Le Royaume ambitionne d'être reconnu comme une puissance africaine émergente dans son identité comme dans son espace de projection. Afin de satisfaire ces ambitions l'appareil diplomatique se développe et se modernise, tandis qu'une identité de rôle singulière émerge autour de la notion de " juste milieu ", soutenue par un cadre de légitimation discursif ainsi que par la conduite d'une " stratégie indirecte ". Purity is a cultural construct that had a central role in the forming and the development of religious traditions in the ancient Mediterranean. This volume analyzes concepts, practices and images associated with purity in the main cultures of Antiquity, and discusses from a comparative perspective their parallel developments and transformations. The perspective adopted is both synchronic and diachronic; the comparative approach takes into account points of contact and mutual influences, but also includes major transcultural trends. A number of renowned specialists contribute a large variety of perspectives and approaches, combining archaeology, epigraphy and social history; in addition, particular attention is given to concepts of purity in ancient Israel and early Judaism as a 'test-case' of sorts. Theophrastus against the Presocratics and Plato : peripatetic dialectic in the De sensibus /

This study offers a new and stimulating interpretation of Theophrastus' De sensibus , a treatise unique in content and method, as it reports and criticizes the theories of sense perception of the Presocratics and Plato. Most of the material on the Presocratics is found nowhere else, which explains why many passages can be found scattered over the Fragmente der Vorsokratiker . As an antidote to this fragmented approach the Presocratics are here studied in context, a text informed by a distinctly Peripatetic perspective. The analysis of the reports and (long neglected) criticisms of Plato (ch.4) and the Presocratics (ch.5) offers new insights into Theophrastus' exegetical procedure by succesfully using Peripatetic dialectic as a heuristic tool. The Epilogue outlines some implications for the role of the treatise in the doxographical tradition.

The rhetoric of explanation in Lucretius' De rerum natura /
:
Alleged incompatibility of Epicurus' philosophy with rhetoric has led modern scholars to isolate rhetorical procedures in Lucretius' De rerum natura and regard them as non-Epicurean, accessory features. This study of Lucretius' rhetorical procedures is based on a wider understanding of the term rhetoric, not limited to the genre of oratory. In a fresh discussion of the questions of provenance and the role of the most important formal procedures of exposition in De rerum natura the author argues that instead of injecting rhetorical strategies from non-Epicurean sources, Lucretius in fact intensified rhetorical elements already present in the work of Epicurus. These elements are used for the purpose of explanation, and function as cognitive and mnemonic aids for the reader.

The language of Ḫaṣāʾiṣ is reputed to be difficult to access, and the thought of its author relatively opaque. With this book, readers now have a key to penetrate the linguistic thought of one of the most important grammarians in the Arabic grammatical tradition. It shows how Ibn Ǧinnī used the concepts of the episteme of his time to systematize grammatical explanatory reasoning. On reading this book, the reader will also perceive the importance attached by Ibn Ǧinnī to the role played by the speaker in language change, in that the speaker is seen as the true agent (ʿāmil) of his discourse. This work also offers the reader a broader perspective on Ibn Ǧinnī's relationship with the grammatical tradition, as it shows, for example, that most of Ibn Ǧinnī's diachronic reflections are borrowed from one of Sībawayhi's forgotten disciples (180/796): al-Aḫfaš al-Awsaṭ (215/830).

Lucretius and the late Republic : an essay in Roman intellectual history /

The crisis Rome experienced in the last decades of the Republic was intellectual as well as political, social and military. This crisis was marked by conflicts over values and a growing dichotomy between words and things, as a result of which the key words of the Roman tradition lost their anchor in the inherited, commonly-held percepetion of reality known as the mos maiorum . The crisis was therefore also one of the Latin language itself. The monograph explores this thesis in discussions of the background and character of Roman intellectual history, the nature of the mos maiorum , the relationship of the Late Republic to the Mediterranean world, the roles of Julius Caesar, Catullus, Cicero, and Lucretius in the crisis, and its Augustan and later consequences. The major portion of the discussion is devoted to Lucretius, because the De Rerum Natura is the clearest example of the extent and nature of the crisis, from which it took its origin and gained its form and purpose. A principal goal of the essay is to relate Lucretius to the structure of Roman literary and intellectual history. It finds the explanation for his work in the nature of that history and the characteristic Roman modes and categories of thought rather than in the general history fo Greek philosophy. It also offers a new explanation of the relationshiop of the authors of the Late Republic to each other. In so doing, it indicates the foundation for a new history of Roman literature and a new conception of the reality and importance of the intellectual history of Rome.
