In Penthesilea und ihre Schwestern - Amazonenepisoden als Bauform des Heldenepos Susanne Borowski establishes Amazon-episodes as a gender-sensitive structural element of epic poetry. This is the first book that provides a comprehensive intertextual interpretation of all Amazon-episodes in Homer's Iliad , Apollonius Rhodius' Argonautica , Vergil's Aeneid , Valerius Flaccusʼ Argonautica , Statiusʼ Thebaid , Silius Italicusʼ Punica and Quintus Smyrnaeus' Posthomerica. Where previous scholars have often interpreted Amazons as a symbol of transgressive behaviour, this study shows that they are universally respected warriors. Their appearance, descent, and aristeiai characterize their fighting as transgendered. This study offers new perspectives on the construction of gender in Graeco-Roman Epic. Mit Penthesilea und ihre Schwestern - Amazonenepisoden als Bauform des Heldenepos weist Susanne Borowski nach, dass Amazonenepisoden eine genderrelevante Bauform des Epos sind. Sie untersucht erstmals aus literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive alle überlieferten Amazonenepisoden in Homers Ilias , Apollonius Rhodiusʼ Argonautica , Vergils Aeneis , Valerius Flaccusʼ Argonautica , Statiusʼ Thebais , Silius Italicusʼ Punica und Quintus Smyrnaeusʼ Posthomerica. Interpretiert die bisherige Forschung Amazonen meist als Symbol von Grenzüberschreitung, erweist die intertextuelle Analyse dieser Studie vielmehr, dass sie unerschrockene, allseits respektierte Kriegerinnen sind. Ihr Äußeres, ihre Abstammung und ihre Aristien charakterisieren ihr Kämpfen durchgängig als transgendered. Modern individuality is one of the central topics of Hegel's practical philosophy, discussed systematically in the forms of subjectivity in subjective, objective, and practical spirit. Hegel interpreted modern existence and lifeworld in the context of law, politics, economy, and private life. "Infinite subjective freedom" is the historical principle of the "modern age", as well as the basic determination of modern individual forms of existence and knowledge. Modern form of life and mentality based on the values and practical actions of self-knowledge and self-determination is an achievement of historical significance. This radical turn, however, gives a new perspective to the problem of good life: the normative role of substantial values is overshadowed by the stabilizing function of the "objective order" of institutions.

En dehors d'analyses de type sociologique, les déclamations latines n'ont généralement que peu retenu l'attention des spécialistes de l'Antiquité. Pourtant, ces discours fictifs constituaient le couronnement de l'éducation rhétorique et un élément central de l'activité littéraire. De ce fait, ils appartiennent de plein droit au domaine de la littérature antique. Ce livre veut mieux faire connaître les déclamations latines et leur fonction dans le système éducatif romain. Il s'attache à mettre en lumière leur littérarité, en analysant les techniques narratives mises en œuvres et en soulignant leurs liens avec la poésie et le roman. L'ouvrage se penche également sur la question des rapports que ces textes entretiennent avec la réalité et sur celle de la pertinence de leur utilisation comme sources historiques. Il en ressort une réévaluation des déclamations, susceptible de susciter un nouvel intérêt pour ce genre littéraire majeur de l'Antiquité. The Latin declamations have, except for sociological analysis, drawn but little attention from specialists of Antiquity. However, these fictional discourses represented the highlight of the rhetorical education and were a central element in literary activity. This book strives to draw the Latin declamations and their role in the Roman educational system from the shadows. It will bring to light their literary nature and underline their ties with poetry and the novel. It also investigates the relation between these texts and reality and the pertinence of their use as historical sources. The result is a revaluation of the declamations, liable to provoke a new interest in this major literary genre of Antiquity.

The Roman colony of Philippi is the site upon which Paul founded his first European congregation. There, he encountered a political entity which bore the stamp of Roman culture through and through. Part I describes Philippi's political and religious situation based on numismatic, epigraphical, archaeological and literary sources. Part II reconstructs the relationship between Paul, the congregation, and the city of Philippi, and demonstrates the influence which the Roman environment exerted on the church's organization and preaching. The work reaches the conclusion that the Philippean community assumed an active and self-confident role in implementing its mission. In so doing, it clashed with the Roman authorities and their insistence upon a religious praxis that did not call into question the principles or existence of the Roman State. The book contributes to the interpretation of the Epistle to the Philippians as well as to the history of early Christianity and the history of Religions during the first century.

Given the concept of salvation through knowledge in Valentinian Gnosis, which is basically anti-materialist, one would not expect concrete physical rituals to play a large role in its practice. The Nag Hammadi Gospel of Philip is widely recognized as a Valentinian text, yet it contains portions of a treatise on the value of baptism, anointing, and the eucharist. The text, which arguably comes from the end of the second century, presents the first developed theory and justification of these sacraments in Early Christianity. The present study reconstructs this theory from the fragmentary text and considers its consequences for the organization of the community. Thus, the book is also an attempt to address the problem of institutionalization in early Christian communities.

Josua und Salomo puts forward the thesis that the literary figure of the successor was created by circles who strongly relied on the book of Deuteronomy. In order to construct the ideal of a successor they used the characters of Joshua and Solomon and implemented the results of their theological reflection which were unleashed by the complete destruction of the pre-exilic political, social and religious organization of the nation. The figure of Joshua combines all the treats of their theological conception of an ideal political leader, whereas the figure of Solomon demonstrates the dangers which are implied in monarchical succession. From the theological perspective of deuteronomism "Solomon" and "Joshua" are opposite characters. The deuteronomic concepts of God and authority play a central role for the reflection on both characters.
