Die politische Rolle der stadtrömischen Plebs in der Kaiserzeit engages with the topical question of the political role of the Roman plebs in the imperial period and seeks to reconstruct how it may have looked in practice and how it can be defined. Detailed source criticism of Tacitus, Suetonius, Dio Cassius, and others demonstrates that the passages thematizing citizens are primarily narrative in function. This approach further sharpens our understanding of the plebs' actual historical actions both regarding their causes, forms, and extent, as well as their attitude towards the emperors. This reappraisal allows for new insights and corrects numerous prior assessments, especially with regard to the function assigned the plebs as part of the so-called 'system of acceptance'. Die politische Rolle der stadtrömischen Plebs in der Kaiserzeit befasst sich mit der vieldiskutierten Frage, wie die politische Rolle der stadtrömischen Plebs in der Kaiserzeit ausgesehen haben mag und wie sie definiert werden kann. Die Autorin kann anhand intensiver Quellenkritik, insbesondere der Werke des Tacitus, Sueton und Cassius Dio, einerseits zeigen, dass die Passagen zum Volk in erster Linie eine narrative Funktion erfüllen. Andererseits ermöglicht genau dieser Zugang, die Kenntnisse über die historischen Aktivitäten zu schärfen: etwa hinsichtlich Auslösern, Formen oder Umfang, aber auch der Haltung der Plebs gegenüber den Principes. Dadurch werden neue Einblicke gewährt und etliche Positionen der bisherigen Forschung korrigiert. Als unhaltbar erweist sich insbesondere die Rolle, die der Plebs im sogenannten ,Akzeptanzsystem' zugesprochen wird.

A high proportion of the many articles published by the papyrologist T.C. Skeat (1907-2003), a former Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum, concerns the New Testament. This present collection gathers together papers on Biblical and related matters contributed by Skeat for over sixty years to various publications. The book divides these into three sections: ancient book production, studies on particular Biblical manuscripts and textual criticism. In his Introduction J.K. Elliott assesses the importance of Skeat's work and he incorporates from personal correspondence some of Skeat's later thinking on these topics. A full Bibliography of Skeat's writings is included.

The copper scroll, 3Q15 : a reevaluation : a new reading, translation and commentary /

This volume deals with the Copper Scroll, an almost two thousand year old cryptic proto-Mishnaic Hebrew Dead Sea document. It is the largest known ancient text to have ever been recorded on metal. The Introduction covers the nature and site of the discovery, opening of the two brittle oxidized copper rolls, deciphering the text, controversy about genuineness of the content, et cetera The in-depth study presents the primary major studies, and offers a new reading, translation, and interpretation, including alternatives, as well as detailed studies of some unique aspects. The analysis is based on Rabbinical Jewish sources originating largely in the same historical era. This results into a more reliable interpretation of the Copper Scroll which probably originates from the Priestly leaders of Jerusalem, and contains a list of the hidden treasures of the Second Temple before its destruction by the Romans.

Die Landeskinderheilstätte Mammolshöhe in Mammolshain/Taunus war von 1927 bis 1947 ein Sanatorium, in dem an Tuberkulose erkrankte Kinder und Jugendliche behandelt wurden. Ab 1947 nahm die Einrichtung einen klinischen Charakter an und wurde zu einer Stätte der TBC-Forschung. Dieser Umschwung war das Werk des neuen Direktors Werner Catel, der vor 1945 in zentraler Funktion an der NS-Kinder-"Euthanasie" mitgewirkt hatte. Er begann auf der Mammolshöhe mit einer Versuchsreihe zur Erprobung eines neu entwickelten Präparats gegen TBC. Die Vorgänge rund um die Versuchsreihe wurden im Zusammenhang mit einer von Verleugnung und Verharmlosung der Fakten geprägten Neuerfindung der Biographie Catels umgedeutet. Die Studie zeigt exemplarisch, wie sich die ausbleibende kritische Auseinandersetzung der Medizin mit der eigenen Rolle im NS-Staat nach 1945 auswirken konnte.

Dabei waren seine Untertanen nicht nur Rezipienten kaiserlicher Selbstdarstellung, sondern beteiligten sich auch aktiv an der Ausgestaltung der kaiserlichen Repräsentation mit ihren eigenen Vorstellungen und Erwartungen. Dieses Thema wird in Dialogangebote. Die Anrede des Kaisers jenseits der offiziellen Titulatur erstmals am Beispiel der sog. inoffiziellen Titulaturen auf breiter Quellenbasis untersucht. Dabei werden diese ehrenden Epitheta in ihrer diachronen Entwicklung von Augustus bis Severus Alexander (27 v. Chr. - 235 n. Chr.) und ihren thematischen, medialen, funktionalen und sozialen Kontexten analysiert. Die Untersuchung arbeitet die wichtige Rolle der Untertanen für die Herrscherrepräsentation heraus und bietet neue Einblicke in die Bedeutung dieses Phänomens für die reziproke Kommunikation zwischen Kaiser und Untertanen. The people of the Roman Empire encountered the emperor in many different ways, such as through statues in public places, his portrait on coins or his name in inscriptions. In these encounters, his subjects were not merely recipients of imperial self-expression, but also expressed their own ideas and expectations. Dialogangebote. These honorific epithets are analysed in their diachronic development from Augustus to Severus Alexander (27 BCE - 235 CE) and discussed in their thematic, media, functional and social contexts. The study fleshes out the important role played by the subjects in the representation of rulers and offers new insights into the importance of this phenomenon for the reciprocal communication between emperors and subjects.

Die Analyse verortet Yaḥyās philosophisches und theologisches Denken an der Schnittstelle mehrerer griechischer, syrischer und arabischer intellektueller Traditionen. Mit ihrem Fokus auf Yaḥyās Schriften über die Inkarnation ergänzt diese Studie vorhandene Forschung, die sich vor allem auf seine Werke über die Trinität konzentriert hat, und trägt zu einem vollständigeren Bild von Yaḥyās philosophischer Theologie bei. This study examines the usage of central philosophical terms in Yaḥyā b. ʿAdī's Christological writings, specifically "the one", "substance", "body", "soul", and "intellect", in the context of Yaḥyā's entire body of work and of his sources.
