This study deals essentially with the knowledge of the Palestinian Rabbis concerning paganism in the days of Mishna and Talmud. The Late Professor Saul Lieberman wrote that "Many isolated items on idolatry and idol worshippers are scattered all over rabbinic literature. It would require a large volume to treat this topic". This valuable and exhaustive study proves methodically that the Rabbis had deeper knowledge about Syrian, Arabian, Anatolian and Graeco-Roman Pagan cults than is commonly believed. Regional and administrative units, nomes and toparchies divided Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt into a multitude of regions and districts, allowing the total control of the state over the land. Used since at least the Old Kingdom, this system has undergone important changes throughout the history of the country. However, the pace and nature of the remodelling seem to intensify during the Greco-Roman period. This book analyses the territorial division of Egypt, between Elephantine and Memphis, and its fluctuations from the third century BC to the end of the third century AD, when the reforms of Diocletian changed the system again. In parallel to the study of the country's administrative division, the religious geography outlined in the nomes lists and processions of this late period is investigated in detail in order to highlight the reciprocal influences between these two modes of perception of the Egyptian landscape. The interactions observed in this study, even minimal ones, make it possible to nuance the fossilisation of priestly geography and thus to reconsider the traditional Egyptological cliché which claims that a strong distinction is to be made between these two geographies, especially during the Ptolemaic and Roman eras. :

This study, the first to take into account the whole of the Egyptian material, provides new insights into the daily life of the ordinary practitioners in Egypt, some of which can be extrapolated to those of the Roman world in general.

In Terracotta and domestic worship. Bestiary of the Graeco-Roman Egypt , Celine Boutantin proposes a new approach of terracotta produced in Egypt in the Greco-Roman period. A study taking into account the archaeological contexts allows to propose a synthesis of production workshops and to show, in some cases, an adaptation of the production of local cults. An inventory of figurines found in homes, temples and tombs allow to study the functions of these objects. Through the study of a particular theme, animal terracottas, the author raises questions about beliefs and personal or private practices. Dans Terres cuites et culte domestique. Bestiaire de l'Égypte gréco-romaine , Céline Boutantin propose une nouvelle approche des figurines en terre cuite produites en Égypte à l'époque gréco-romaine. Une étude prenant en compte les contextes archéologiques permet de dresser un bilan des ateliers de production et de montrer, dans certains cas, une adaptation de la production à des cultes locaux. Elle permet aussi de dresser un inventaire des figurines trouvées dans les maisons, les sanctuaires et les tombes et de proposer une synthèse sur les fonctions de ces objets. A travers l'étude d'un thème particulier, les représentations animales, l'auteur aborde sous un angle nouveau la question des croyances et des pratiques personnelles ou privées.

La Phrygie Parorée et la Pisidie septentrionale deals with the history, the historical geography and the cultural sociology of Phrygia Paroreios and Northern Pisidia during the Hellenistic and Roman periods (IVth century BC - IVth century AD). This region of inner Anatolia, mostly inhabited by Pisidians and Phrygians, faced gradually the settlement of Greek, Macedonian, Jewish, Thracian, Lycian and Roman colonists who deeply modified the local cultures and geopolitics. With an approach based on epigraphic, archaeological, literary and numismatic sources, this work is the first historical synthesis devoted to a region showing strong cultural identities, which makes it essential to the understanding of the Graeco-Roman East. La Phrygie Parorée et la Pisidie septentrionale traite de l'Histoire, de la géographie historique et de la sociologie culturelle de la Phrygie Parorée et du Nord de la Pisidie aux époques hellénistique et romaine (IVe s. av. J.-C.-IVe s. ap. J.-C.). Cette région de l'Anatolie intérieure, surtout peuplée par les Pisidiens et les Phrygiens, eut successivement à faire face à l'installation de colons grecs, macédoniens, juifs, thraces, lyciens et romains qui modifièrent en profondeur les cultures et la géopolitique locales. Grâce à une approche fondée sur l'examen des sources épigraphiques, archéologiques, littéraires et numismatiques, cet ouvrage constitue la première synthèse historique sur une région aux identités culturelles marquées, essentielle à la compréhension de l'Orient gréco-romain.
