This study deals essentially with the knowledge of the Palestinian Rabbis concerning paganism in the days of Mishna and Talmud. The Late Professor Saul Lieberman wrote that "Many isolated items on idolatry and idol worshippers are scattered all over rabbinic literature. It would require a large volume to treat this topic". This valuable and exhaustive study proves methodically that the Rabbis had deeper knowledge about Syrian, Arabian, Anatolian and Graeco-Roman Pagan cults than is commonly believed. This fourth volume of IBIS completes the first series of this analytical bibliography of publications concerning the spread of cults of Isis published between 1940 and 1969 (nos. 1167 to 1752). Authors have sometimes been driven to look beyond the limits of the Greco-Roman world and the field of the Isiac cults stricto sensu . Such is the case with Egyptian or Egyptisizing documents carried by Greek or Phonecian-Punic commerce towards the distant western coasts of the Mediterranean basin. The Egyptophile tradition in our European culture seems to have taken its place here too. Each of the literature reviews given here is accompanied by very precise bibliographical references for the publications concerned, as well as a detailed analysis of the contents of the publication and its contribution to the general themes of research. This volume examines orality and literacy in the ancient Greek and Roman world through a range of perspectives and in various genres. Four essays on the Homeric epics present recent research into performative aspects of language, cognitive theory and oral composition, a re-evaluation of Parry's oral-formulaic theory, and a new perspective on the poem's transmission. These are complemented by studies of the oral nature of Greek proverbial expressions, and of poetic authority within a fluid oral tradition. Two essays consider the significance of the written word in a predominantly oral culture, in relation to star calendars and to Panathenaic inscriptions. Finally, two chapters consider the ongoing influence of oral tradition in the ancient novel and in Roman declamation. In the Hellenistic and Roman world intimate relations existed between those holding power and the cults of Isis. This book is the first to chart these various appropriations over time within a comparative perspective. Ten carefully selected case studies show that "the Egyptian gods" were no exotic outsiders to the Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean, but constituted a well institutionalised and frequently used religious option.
