Dai De's Records of Ritual is a collection of 40 texts purporting to record the teachings of ancient Chinese rulers as well as the teachings of Confucius, his disciples, and his later followers on topics, broadly speaking, about creating society and ordering the world. The original collection contained over 80 texts, first collected sometime around the first century BCE, with Dai De 戴德 as the attributed editor. By the sixth century CE, a number of texts were lost, leaving the Da Dai Liji in its received form, which is presented here in English alongside the Chinese.

The archaistic style in Roman statuary /

This book deals with the use of archaistic stylistic elements (i.e., those which revive or imitate features of Greek Archaic art) in free standing statuary dating from the second century B.C. to the third century A.C. The main objective of the study is to determine how the archaistic style was used, what prototypes were imitated, what subjects were represented, how the replicas of statue types were distributed, how these statues were displayed, and what prompted such stylistic anachronism. The introductory chapter deals with general problems of archaism in ancient art and the specific questions pertaining to statuary in the round. The body of material, nearly three hundred pieces in all, is organized by type on the basis of pose and garment arrangement. In a concluding chapter, evidence from the body of the study is collected and possible answers are suggested for the questions outlined above. This study contributes to the currently widespread scholarly interest in stylistic revivals (especially classicism and archaism) which occurred not only in Roman times, but in earlier and later periods as well.

In order to further scientific knowledge of human rights, the Council of Europe holds high-level meetings, such as colloquies, round tables and seminars. Every five years an important Colloquy on the European Convention on Human Rights takes place in a town of a member State. The Eighth International Colloquy on the European Convention on Human Rights, organised by the Secretariat General of the Council of Europe in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice of Hungary and the Hungarian Institute for Legal and Administrative Sciences, was held in Budapest from 20 to 23 September 1995. This volume contains the Proceedings of the Budapest Colloquy, which covered the following themes: The European Convention on Human Rights and cultural rights 1st session: Cultural rights: universal, indivisible, and legally enforceable rights; 2nd session: Cultural rights and the management of particular situations to ensure democratic security in Europe; The European Convention on Human Rights in the new architecture of Europe 3rd session: Effects on the European Convention on Human Rights of the enlargement of the number of Contracting Parties; 4th session: Implementation of the reform of the European Convention on Human Rights control machinery. Ananda Ranga Pillai : The 'Pepys' of French India /

The book contains the record of the events concerning the emergence of the French in south India from 1736 to 1760 compiled by Ananda Ranga Pillai. Ananda Ranga Pillai was a merchant by profession, who also served as a dubashi of the French East India Company. He belonged to a well-to-do merchant family in Madras. He became a close confidant to Joseph François Dupleix, the Governor-General of the French East India Company. He served Dupleix till his removal on account of ill health and deteriorating performance. His accounts reflect the eighteenth-century political scenario in the Madras province, and more specifically the Anglo-French Carnatic wars. The author of this book referred to Pillai as the 'Samuel Pepys of French India', who was an English diarist and navy administrator from whom the title of this book is given. The volume is part of article series, 'The Historical Material in the Private Diary of Ananda Ranga Pillai (1736-1761)' which was committed into a form of a book in 1940. Its English translation was published by the Madras Government. This book discusses the activities of the French in Madras province, and in particular, gave special reference to Dupleix's political activities. It also contains the history of Pondicherry which he recorded in his diaries. This book is from one of few Indian writers, who gave a closer look at the European activities in India. This volume also covers the conflicts between the Nawab of Carnatic and the subject of the Mughal Empire, Chanda Sahib, and the commandant of the English East Company's army, Yusuf Khan. Besides, the chapter covers the description of noted political figures like La Bourdonnais, Leyrit, Godeheu, and De Bussy, and covers the annexation of Madras, military operations conducted at Cuddalore and Pondicherry, and the fall of Pondicherry.

Bengal Water Craft : Boat-Building and Fishing Communities /

This is a unique work on the boat building traditions of Bengal. The boats of West Bengal have been influenced on the one hand by the boats of Bihar and on the other by the traditions of Bangladesh. North Bengal follows the ecology of the sub-Himalayan region and the boats of the region illustrate this well. Thirteen chapters describe the typology of different boats found in West Bengal. From raft and dugout, the survey moves to the rich centre of boat building at Balagarh. From here it moves to cargo carriers such as the bhedi. Boats are linked to ecological regions but massive programmes such as the Damodar Valley Corporation changed the pattern of the waters. The remarkable ingenuity of the boat builders is shown in the new boat types such as the Cho_t Šālti, which were developed in conformity with the changes in river flow. Chapter fourteen outlines fishing activities in the Sundarbans area, linking this to boat typology. From the methodological angle the work follows closely the model evolved by George Hornell. All available historical records have been examined. The author has conducted a meticulous survey of existing ethnological sources which are used to fill in the gaps in our knowledge. A map showing the centres where various types of boats are made in West Bengal has also been included. This book therefore ventures into new ground, linking ecology with historical methodology, and is, above all, a singular tribute to the all round artistry of the Bengal boat builder.
