Mughal Documents (1526-1627) /
:
This book seeks to present an integrated study of 350 Mughal documents covering the period from 1526 to 1627 and spanning the reigns of Babur, Humayun, Akbar and Jahangir. It gives a general idea of the nature, contents and territorial range of the documents and assesses their value for reconstructing the history of Mughal India, which has hitherto been largely based on chronicles, travelogues, manual, etc. It shows that the Mughals modelled their documentary practices after those prevalent in their homeland and those followed by their Turko-Afghan predecessors.

In the presence of Sai Baba : body, city, and memory in a global religious movement /
:
The Sai Baba movement, centered on the Indian guru Sathya Sai Baba (b. 1926), today attracts a global following from Japan to South Africa. Regarded as a divine incarnation, Sathya Sai Baba traces his genealogy to Shirdi Sai Baba (d. 1918), a mendicant in colonial India identified with various Sufi and devotional genealogies. The movement, thus, has "roots" in Shirdi Sai Baba but as it globalizes, it has developed conjunctions with other religious traditions, New Religious movements, and New Age ideas. This book offers an account of the Sai Baba movement as a pathway for charting the varied cartographies, sensory formations, and cultural memories implicated in urbanization and globalization. It traverses the terrain between social theories for the study of religion and cities ---themselves a product of modernity---and the radical, creative, and unexpected modernity of contemporary religious movements. It is based on ethnographic research carried out in India, Kenya, and the US.

Ceramic manufacturing techniques and cultural traditions in Nubia from the 8th to the 3rd millennium BC : examples from Sai Island /

In Sudan the first ceramic containers appeared at the beginning of the 9th millennium BC, with the earliest dates c. 8700 BC from Sorourab 2, in Central Sudan, and c. 8600 BC from the district of Amara West, in Northern Sudan. This work presents a comprehensive critical analysis of diverse ceramic assemblages from Sai Island, in the Middle Nile Valley of Northern Sudan, on the border between ancient Upper and Lower Nubia. The assemblages included in this study cover about five millennia, spanning the period c. 8000 to c. 2500 BC.

This is the first book to provide a systematic investigation of the relation between community and literature in the work of Jean-Luc Nancy. It develops the original claim that this relation has to be understood as a rethinking of myth. Traversing the entirety of Nancy's vast oeuvre, the author offers an incomparable account of the ways in which Nancy's central questions of community and literature are linked together. Moreover, by putting this linkage in terms of 'myth', this book situates Nancy's work within a larger tradition, leading from German Romanticism to contemporary theories of the social relevance of literature.
