Ships, saints and sealore : cultural heritage and ethnography of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea /
:
Just as the sea has played a pivotal role in the connectivity of people, economies and cultures, it has also provided a common platform for inter-disciplinary cooperation amongst academics. This book is a selection of conference papers and other contributions that has seen the coming-together of scholars and researchers from backgrounds as diverse as archaeology, history, ethnography, maritime and heritage studies of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Its strength lies in the way such diversity has been harnessed to provide an engaging and insightful study of the sea and its influences on various factors of life - both past and present.

Augustine and Manichaean Christianity : selected papers from the first South African Conference...
:
Based on several newly discovered texts, Augustine and Manichaean Christianity provides groundbreaking discussions of the relationship between the most influential church father of the West and the religion of his formative years. Augustine's connection with Manichaean Christians was not only intense, but also enduring. This book unearths the essential background of writings such as Augustine's Confessiones , De ordine and De vera religione , and discloses many a hidden Manichaean source of his powerful concepts of memory and the vision of God. Contributions by, among others, Iain Gardner, Therese Fuhrer, Jason BeDuhn, Majella Franzmann, Josef Lössl, Annemaré Kotzé and Nils Arne Pedersen.

Queens, consorts, concubines : Gregory of Tours and women of the Merovingian elite /
:
Gregory of Tours hoped to inspire the believers in sixth-century Gaul with examples of righteous and wicked deeds and their consequences. Critiquing his own society, Gregory contrasted vengeful queens, rebellious nuns, and conniving witches with pious widows, humble abbesses, and tearful saints. By examining his thematic treatment of topics including widowhood, marriage, sanctity, authority, and political agency, Queens, Consorts, Concubines reassesses the material shaped by such concerns, including e.g. Gregory's accounts of Brunhild, Fredegund, Radegund, and other important elite women, Merovingian political policies (marital alliances, ecclesiastical intrigue, even assassinations), and seemingly unrelated topics such as Hermenegild's rebellion and the career of Empress Sophia. The result: a new interpretation of an important witness to the transformations of Late Antiquity.

Demons and the Devil in ancient and medieval Christianity /
:
This collection of essays approaches the role of demons and the devil in ancient and medieval Christianity from a variety of scholarly perspectives: historical, philosophical, and theological as well as philological, liturgical, and theoretical. In the opening article Gerd Theissen presents a wide-ranging overview of the role of the devil, spanning the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and patristic literature. The contributions that follow address texts on the devil, demons, and evil, and are drawn from ancient philosophy, the New Testament, early Christian apologetics, hagiography, and history. Covering primarily the patristic period, the volume also contains articles on medieval sources. The introduction discusses the different angles of approach found in the articles in an effort to shed fresh light on this familiar but also uniquely troubling theme.

A Linguistic Approach to Revelation 19:11-20:6 and the Millennium Binding of Satan /
:
Is the establishment of the millennium binding of Satan cohesively linked with Jesus's victorious battle in the Book of Revelation? This study is the first to answer this frequently debated question from a linguistic perspective.
This study argues that the establishment of the millennium binding of Satan and the vindication of the saints in Revelation 20:1-6 are cohesively linked with Jesus's victorious battle in Revelation 19:11-21. The major implication of this analysis views both these events as consequent effects of Christ's victory at the eschatological battle. Applying systemic functional linguistics and discourse analysis of cohesion, this study advances critical scholarship on the Book of Revelation by offering the first fully sustained answer to this frequently debated question regarding Satan's binding from a modern linguistic approach.

Est-ce reel? : phenomenologies de l'imaginaire /
:
While realism has enjoyed renewed vigor in contemporary philosophy, Est-ce réel ? Phénoménologies de l'imaginaire challenges the relevance of the concept of reality from a phenomenological perspective. The volume brings together an exciting and provocative range of contemporary research on these issues, moving beyond the classical opposition between the real and the imaginary. Est-ce réel? gathers original contributions from a selected group of specialists, including internationally acclaimed scholars as well as emerging researchers. The collection demonstrates a vast new territory unfolding in contemporary philosophy, from ontological reflections on the imaginary to the analysis of the fundamental aesthetic, ethical, socio-political, and therapeutic implications that follow from them. With texts by G. Chernavin, A. Coignard, A. Dufourcq, I. Fazakas, A. Gléonec, A. Hervy, U. Idziak-Smoczyńska, A. Koubova, C. Lapierre, Y. Murakami, F. Pignarre, D. Popa, E. de Saint Aubert, J. Sallis, A. Schnell, R. Steinmetz et J.J. Wunenburger.
