"This volume offers an exploration of the Christian-Islamic encounter in a pan-Mediterranean context, through an array of new research papers based on micro-historical case studies of the religious arts, architecture, and material culture. The new Mediterraneanism forged during the last decades has opened the door to approaches that reveal Christian-Islamic interchange in its full complexity, as well as diversity. Within this frame, one of the most relevant, yet underexplored lines of investigation is that of the "aesthetic space": the notion that aesthetic pleasure transcends boundaries, paving the way to a cross-religious experience and appreciation. "Indeed, God is beautiful, and He loves beauty", as mentioned in a Hadith narration, a universal cry of visual beauty that resonates with all cultures and civilizations. This volume reproduces nineteen chapters and articles published between 1991 through 2008, on Manichaeism, and its contacts with Augustine of Hippo, its most famous convert and also best-known adversary. The contents are divided into four parts: perceptions of Mani within the Roman Empire, select aspects of Manichaean thought, women in Manichaeism, and Manichaeism and Augustine. Though these chapters and articles reproduce their originals, adjustments have been made to include cross-referencing, newer editions, and the like, all with the aim of rendering them more accessible to a new readership among those who follow the fortunes of Mani's religion in the Roman Empire and/or the "Manichaean" aspects of Augustine of Hippo.

Paul and Seneca in Dialogue assembles an international group of scholars to compare the philosophical and theological strands in Paul and Seneca's writings, placing them in dialogue with one another. Arguably, no other first-century, non-Christian writer's thoughts resemble Paul's as closely as Seneca's, and scholars have often found value in comparing Pauline concepts with Seneca's writings. Nevertheless, apart from the occasional article, broad comparison, or cross-reference, an in-depth critical comparison of these writers has not been attempted for over fifty years - since Sevenster's monograph of 1961. In the light of the vast amount of research offering new perspectives on both Paul and Seneca since the early 1960s, this new comparison of the two writers is long overdue.

This book focuses on iconoclastic controversies and, in particular, their impact on the creation of religious identities. In the history of Jewish, Christian and Muslim culture, religious identity was not only formed through historical claims, but also through the use of certain images: 'images of God', 'images of the others', and 'images of the self.' Moreover, in the struggle for religious identity these 'images' were time and again employed for the purpose of establishing distinct groups, both ortho- dox and deviant. At the same time, they supplied weapons in the theological debate and found explicit expression in certain rituals or liturgical traditions. These conference proceedings include a discussion of the role of images in society, politics, theology and liturgy, in particular addressing the 'iconoclash' of physical, mental and verbal images on the construction of religious identity.
