Archaeology of the books of Samuel : the entangling of the textual and literary history /
:
The books of Samuel are a key link in the history of the biblical text in so much as they are found at a crossroad where different textual traditions encounter each other (MT, LXX, Qumran). Recent research tends to consider that the textual criticism has to take into account the literary aspects which characterise the most ancient transmission of the text. This assessment asks a variety of new exegetical questions considered in this volume: Does the comparative analysis of the textual witnesses permit proving the existence of distinct literary editions? Which are the criteria to deem the literary nature of the variants? Which ideological and theological motives governed the modifications of a previous text? Is it possible to establish a relative chronology between the putative editions? The study of the most ancient history of the text opens an archeology of the monument that are the books of Samuel. The search for their ancient foundations and the bringing to light of later modifications, the consideration both of the restorations and of the ruins of the textual edifice all throw new light on the final construct and its theological significance.

Sapiential, liturgical and poetical texts from qumran : proceedings of the third meeting ...
:
At the third meeting of the International Organisation for Qumran Studies, held in Oslo in 1998, a variety of papers were presented concerning the study of the Sapiential, Liturgical and Poetical Texts from Qumran. The fourteen papers selected for this volume are arranged in three sections. 'Sapiential Texts' contains four studies on different wisdom texts from Cave 4; 'Liturgical and Poetical Texts' is formed by seven papers dealing with independent poetic or liturgical compositions; while 'Qumran Wisdom and the New Testament' presents three papers that explore the relationship of wisdom materials found at Qumran and some passages of the New Testament. The volume is published in memory of Maurice Baillet, who passed away shortly before the meeting. It contains a biographical sketch and his complete bibliography provided by Emile Puech.

Speaking of Jesus : essays on biblical language, gospel narrative, and the historical Jesus /
:
This volume presents a selection of essays by the late Willem Vorster, one of the most prominent New Testament scholars to have emerged from South Africa. An introductory essay by the editor explains Vorster's contribution to New Testament scholarship in general and to South African New Testament scholarship in particular. Vorster's essays are grouped primarily under the topics \'Language and Linguistics\', \'Reader Response\', \'Narratology\', \'Historical Paradigms\' and \'The Historical Jesus\'. In addition to his work on method, Vorster was a well-known Markan scholar, and this is reflected in the fact that more than half of his methodological essays are concerned with that Gospel. The book includes a curriculum vitae , a full bibliography and indexes.

The Samaritan version of Saadya Gaon's translation of the Pentateuch : critical edition and study of MS London BL OR7562 and related MSS /
:
This edition of MS London BL OR7562 and other related MSS, and the accompanying linguistic and philological study, discuss a Samaritan adaptation of Saadya's Judeo-Arabic translation of the Pentateuch, its main characteristics and place among other early Medieval Arabic Bible translations, viz., other versions of Saadya's translation of the Pentateuch, other Samaritan Arabic versions of the Pentateuch, and Christian and Karaite Arabic Bible translations. The study analyses the various components of this version, its transmission, its language, the extent to which the Samaritans adapted this version of Saadya's translation to their own version of the Hebrew Pentateuch, and their possible motives in choosing it for their own use.

Centripetal Joyce / Joyce Centrifugal /
:
In Dublin in June 2022, a symposium of scholars celebrated the centenary of the original publication of Joyce's Ulysses . This volume, a gathering of selected papers presented at that event, displays how vibrant and varied are the avenues of inquiry and research into Joyce's works today. From orality to elegy, contemplating comparisons with artists as different as Ovid, Derek Walcot, and John Cage, these essays project inward (centripetally) and outward (centrifugally) to examine the receptions of Joyce's works, their legacies, and the possible futures of Joyce studies.

The Rise of the Covenant of Redemption in the Theology of Samuel Rutherford /
:
The Church of Scotland divine Samuel Rutherford (1600-61) was among the first theologians to say that Christ's saving work took place to fulfill an agreement between God and Christ that had been made in eternity. By placing Rutherford's major statements of this new doctrine in their various social, political, polemical, and pastoral contexts, this book provides a fresh explanation for the dramatic rise of the eternal covenant of redemption to become the cornerstone of Reformed federal theology and offers a case-study in the development of doctrine.

Jesus as the Son of 1-2 Samuel's David : An Intertextual Reading of the Gospel of Matthew /
:
Although the Gospel of Matthew emphasizes Jesus as the son of David, no one has systematically investigated how 1-2 Samuel influence Matthew's portrayal of Jesus as the son of David. This work addresses that lacuna and shows how the sustained use of 1-2 Samuel in Matthew evokes the themes of mercy and righteousness as the hallmarks of a proper Davidic shepherd. The book's systematic intertextual and narrative approach offers another way to understand Matthew's Christology and portrayal of the kingdom of heaven. It helps the reader appreciate the justice-focused nature of Jesus' rule and its religious and political implications.

Mission and money : Christian mission in the context of global inequalities /
:
Mission and Money; Christian Mission in the Context of Global Inequalities offers academic discussion about the mission of the Church in the context of contemporary economic inequalities globally, challenging the reader to reconsider mission in the light of existing poverty, and investigating how economic structures could be challenged in the light of ethical and spiritual considerations. The book includes contributions on the subjects of poverty and inequality from the theologians, economists and anthropologists who gave keynote presentations at the European Missiological Conference (IAMS Europe) that took place in April 2014 in Helsinki, Finland. This conference was a major step forward in terms of discussion between missiologists and economists on global economic structures and their influence on human dignity. Transfer of Buddhism across Central Asian networks (7th to 13th centuries) /
:
The interdisciplinary volume Transfer of Buddhism across Central Asian Networks (7th to 13th Centuries) , edited by Carmen Meinert, offers a new transregional and transcultural vision for religious transfer processes in Central Asian history. It looks at the region as an integrated (religious) whole rather than from the perspective of fragmented sub-disciplines and analyses the spread of Buddhism as a driving force in a societal and cultural change of pan-Asian importance. One particular dimension of this 'Buddhist globalisation' was the rise of local forms of Buddhism. This volume explores Buddhist localisations through manuscripts and material culture in the multiethnic oases of the Tarim basin, the Transhimalyan region of Zangskar, Ladakh and Kashmir and the Western Tibetan Kingdom of Purang-Guge.

A plague of texts? : a text-critical study of the so-called 'plagues narrative' in Exodus 7:14-11:10 /
:
Prior to any attempt to study a text at the literary level, the textual material itself has to be carefully established. It is for this reason that the present volume is devoted to a detailed text-critical study of the 'physical' text of the 'Plagues Narrative' in Exod. 7:14-11:10. In the first chapter, the author formulates a number of prolegomena relating to textual criticism as a discipline, the extant textual material, the terminology employed and the methodological model that serves as the basis of this study. In the second chapter, data provided by the various textual forms of the 'Plagues Narrative' in Exod. 7:14-11:10, namely MT, LXX, SamP, 4QpaleoExodᵐ, 4QpaleoGen-Exodᶩ, 2QExodᵃ, 4QExodᶜ, 4QGen-Exodᵃ and 4QExodʲ, are registered and described. The extant textual versions themselves are presented in the form of a synopsis, added as an appendix to this book. The third and final chapter offers the text-critical evaluation of all 'text-relevant' variants.

The Canadian Pentecostal Experience /
:
The Canadian Pentecostal Experience includes eighteen essays organized into three themes: 1) Historiography and Early Canadian Pentecostalism; 2) Theological Practices and Processes; and 3) Social and Cultural Change. This collection makes a significant contribution to the growing literature of global Pentecostal scholarship. The works are important for the Canadian context but as the editors argue in the Introduction, Canadian Pentecostalism is "glocal" (shaped by both local and global realities). This collection will interest readers drawn from the wider field of religious studies and global Pentecostalism to initiate conversations about how Pentecostalism evolves in both its local and global expressions.
