Interpreting Avicenna: Science and Philosophy in Medieval Islam : Proceedings of the Second Conference of the Avicenna Study Group /

: This volume provides twelve essays on various aspects of Avicenna's philosophical and scientific contributions, approaching these topics from philological, historical and philosohical methodologies. The work is conceptually divided into four sections: (1) methodology, (2) natural philosophy and the exact sciences, (3) theology and metaphysics and (4) Avicenna's heritage. The First section provides considerations for distinguishing genuine from pseudo Avicennan works. The second section deals with topics encountered in Avicenna's physics, psychology, mathematics and medical theories. The third section treats issues ranging from the theological sources for Avicenna's proof for the existence of God and God's knowledge of particulars to the place of puzzles in Avicenna's Metaphysics as well as the relation of form and matter in Avicenna's thought. The final section considers Avicenna's historical influence on later thinkers such as al-Ghazali as well as his subsequent influence in Persia.

Women's Struggle : A History of the All India Women's Conference 1927-2016 (Third Edition) /

: The All India Women's Conference completed ninety years in 2017. The first edition of this book was brought out in 1990 when it had completed sixty years. The volume was widely appreciated as little work had been done on the history of women's organizations and their contribution to women's development. A second edition was published when AIWC celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 2002-3. These editions were cited in numerous books and articles in journals of women's history in India and abroad. This third edition carries the story of AIWC forward for little over a decade from 2002-3 onwards. Founded in 1927 in Poona, AIWC's main goal initially was promoting women's education. But it soon took up issues of social legislation and social reform. There has been continuity and change in the activities and programmes of AIWC. In the last decade, it has taken up new programmes such as adoption of villages and empowerment of rural women, formation of self help groups, encouraging skill training and vocational courses, starting a legal cell, initiating projects in rural sanitation, clean water, and waste management, herbal gardens, disaster management, etc. It has conducted courses in retail marketing. Its library now has a research centre, an excellent archival collection and holds book discussions. In 2010, AIWC set up three trusts for literacy, health and old age and elderly care for the underprivileged and economically weaker sections. AIWC is also actively involved in the issue of climate change. Old programmes have continued and expanded. The working women's hostel at 6 Bhagwan Dass Road continues as does the Bapnu Ghar which provides shelter and counselling to women in distress. Activities in health and family welfare and nonconventional energy also continue. We hope that this edition, like the earlier ones, will be of interest to scholars of history as well as to students of women's studies.

Beyond the Steppe and the Sown : Proceedings of the 2002 University of Chicago Conference on Eurasian Archaeology /

: In this collection of 29 articles, leading researchers and a generation of new scholars join together in questioning the dominant opposing dichotomy in Eurasian archaeology of the 'steppe and sown,' while forging new approaches which integrate local and global visions of ancient culture and society in the steppe, mountain, desert and maritime coastal regions of Eurasia. This ground-breaking volume demonstrates the success of recently established international research programs and challenges readers with a wide variety of fresh new perspectives. The articles are conveniently divided into four sections on Local and Global Perspectives, Regional Studies, New Directions in Theory and Practice, and Paleoecology and Environment, and cover a broad period from the Copper Age to early Mediaeval times in the Independent States of the former USSR, as well as Turkey, China and Mongolia.

Qumran, the site of the Dead Sea scrolls : archaeological interpretations and debates : proceedings of a conference held at Brown University, November 17-19, 2002 /

: Today, archaeology plays an ever growing role in Qumran studies. Fifteen papers presented in 2002 at Brown University provide the necessary data to break new ground in the recent debate about the character of Qumran. Section I discusses material from old and new excavations that help assess the validity of the traditional Qumran-Essene hypothesis. Part II discusses various aspects of the main settlement such as division of space, the character of period III, the date of the cave scroll deposits and the use of food. Part III deals with the Qumran cemetery and a similar graveyard at Khirbet Qazone. Part IV places Qumran into a wider regional context, concentrating on local agriculture and ceramic production. The articles strongly call for a new awareness for archaeological detail and, in their various ways, instigate a renewed debate about how to bring texts and material culture into a meaningful dialogue.

The Dead Sea scrolls : forty years of research /

: A fortieth anniversary is an occasion to be marked under any circumstances, especially when it concerns a discovery as significant as that of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The proper way to mark this occasion was to organize a symposium that would be as comprehensive as possible, both in content and in variety of approaches, and which would be held in the land of the Scrolls. The papers here reflect not only the variety and richness of subjects treated by contemporary research on Qumran, but also its international character. Since the study of texts remains the first task of the Qumran scholar many of the collection's papers belong to its first section - Texts and Text Studies . The other six sections are: The History of the Qumran Community, Halakha at Qumran, Qumran and the Hebrew Bible, Qumran and the New Testament and The Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls .

Its aim is not only to showcase the range of pioneering work that is currently being done in these areas, but also to provide a model for closer interaction amongst the disciplines constituting this burgeoning field of study. Furthermore, the book provides the rare opportunity to bridge the gap on an institutional level by bringing the academic and curatorial spheres into dialogue.

Religious dynamics under the impact of imperialism and colonialism : a sourcebook /

: This sourcebook offers rare insights into a formative period in the modern history of religions. Throughout the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, when commercial, political and cultural contacts intensified worldwide, politics and religions became ever more entangled. This volume offers a wide range of translated source texts from all over Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, thereby diminishing the difficulty of having to handle the plurality of involved languages and backgrounds. The ways in which the original authors, some prominent and others little known, thought about their own religion, its place in the world and its relation to other religions, allows for much needed insight into the shared and analogous challenges of an age dominated by imperialism and colonialism.

Talmudic transgressions : engaging the work of Daniel Boyarin /

: Talmudic Transgressions is a collection of essays on rabbinic literature and related fields in response to the boundary-pushing scholarship of Daniel Boyarin. This work is an attempt to transgress boundaries in various ways, since boundaries differentiate social identities, literary genres, legal practices, or diasporas and homelands. These essays locate the transgressive not outside the classical traditions but in these traditions themselves, having learned from Boyarin that it is often within the tradition and in its terms that we can find challenges to accepted notions of knowledge, text, and ethnic or gender identity. The sections of this volume attempt to mirror this diverse set of topics. Contributors include Julia Watts Belser, Jonathan Boyarin, Shamma Boyarin, Virginia Burrus, Sergey Dolgopolski, Charlotte E. Fonrobert, Simon Goldhill, Erich S. Gruen, Galit Hasan-Rokem, Christine Hayes, Adi Ophir, James Redfield, Elchanan Reiner, Ishay Rosen-Zvi, Lena Salaymeh, Zvi Septimus, Aharon Shemesh, Dina Stein, Eliyahu Stern, Moulie Vidas, Barry Scott Wimpfheimer, Elliot R. Affirming and living with differences /

: The multi-cultural society is under enormous pressure. Paradoxically, the globalization plans of modernity have resulted in a more fragmented world and ensuing violence. Instead of becoming uniform, individual character and differences have become more strongly emphasized. How can people live together and at the same time preserve their differences? How can variety be valued in a theological manner? These questions form the theme of this collection that consists of three sections. The South African reflections (Simon, Louw and Koopman) that consider living in the variety of a rainbow nation are followed by European experiences of Moluccan Christians in the Netherlands (Pattikayhatu), Western Muslims (van Bommel) and the Belgian modus vivendi (Van der Borght). The collection is completed by the theological reflections about the concept communio sanctorum (Le Bruyns), the Enlightenment's ideal of equality (van de Beek) and the unity of the church (Theron)..
