These proceedings present the first English translation of Gregory's Homilies on the Beatitudes by Stuart Hall, accompanied by a thorough commentary by Anthony Meredith, Andreas Spira, Françoise Vinel, Lucas Mateo-Seco, Thomas Böhm, Karl-Heinz Uthemann, Claudio Moreschini, and Robert Wilken. Eight more contributions by Monique Alexandre, Peter Bruns, Judith Kovacs, Salvatore Lilla, Friedhelm Mann, Alden Mosshammer, Elias Moutsoulas, and Lucian Turcescu focus on further general and particular topics of the homilies as their eschatology, the meaning of the word makarios in all of Gregory's works, the notion of justice, and Gregory's Theology of Adoption, as well as their relationship to Syriac theology, Clement of Alexandria, Neoplatonism, and Gregory's Homilies on the Song of Songs . Noble offers a new interpretation of the development of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology which analyses the central position of language within a philosophy of perception predicated upon the interdependence of seeing and speaking. Beginning with The Structure of Behaviour , and particularly through the work of Goldstein, the study situates the context in which language appears as a dominant theme in Merleau-Ponty's thought within a philosophical debate concerning the living organism which can be traced back to the writings of Kant. The work then re-examines the influences of German phenomenology on Merleau-Ponty, as well as the philosopher's reflections on literature, linguistics, and art, basing its arguments on both published and unpublished texts.

"La peinture de l'Égypte ancienne est essentiellement une peinture murale funéraire. C'est à Thèbes, l'actuelle Louqsor, qu'elle connut son plus grand développement, vers 1539-1077 av. J.-C. (Nouvel Empire) et c'est uniquement de cette peinture-là, plus exactement celle qui orne les tombeaux de particuliers, non les hypogées de la Vallée des Rois et de la Vallée des Reines, qu'il est question ici. L'objectif principal de Nadine Cherpion est l'étude du style dans les tombes thébaines. Par style, on entend aussi bien la dominante de couleurs d'un monument que la courbure d'une perruque ou la longueur d'une chute de reins. C'est ce qui fait 'l'esprit' d'une époque, voire d'un règne. Les études sur le style dans la peinture égyptienne sont peu nombreuses et souvent épuisées ou partielles (Wegner 1933, Mekhitarian 1954, Hofmann 2004). D'autre part, un sujet aussi subtil que le style peut sans difficulté être repris à intervalles réguliers avec un regard neuf. Quittant volontiers les frontières de l'égyptologie, l'auteur replace la peinture thébaine dans le cadre de l'histoire universelle de la peinture, ce qui constitue l'un des aspects novateurs de son propos, tout comme la remise à plat de la datation. Bien plus qu'une compilation, ce livre est un travail de synthèse original, réalisé en grande partie sur le terrain. Il est illustré de nombreuses photographies prises, pour la plupart, par J.-Fr. Dans les manuels d'histoire de la littérature française, on s'en tient très généralement à une périodisation par siècles. C'est une option qui risque toujours de fausser la perspective, notamment là où il s'agit de textes écrits pendant les décennies transitoires. Ainsi, pour ce qui est de la littérature de l'époque qu'on a coutume d'appeler l'automne du moyen âge ou l'aube de la Renaissance: on a tendance à considérer les textes parus avant 1500 comme relevant de la littérature médiévale, et à ne pas trop insister sur les traits modernes qu'éventuellement ils présentent; de la même manière, ceux qui ont été publiés après 1500, appartiendraient plutôt à la littérature moderne, et ne devraient donc pas trop sentir le moyen âge. Le point de vue qu'on adopte ici est tout autre: la littérature du siècle 1450-1550 n'est pas présentée comme un ensemble de textes simplement transitoires, mais elle est considérée telle qu'en elle-même. Aussi, les (fragments de) textes retenus et commentés dans ce manuel-florilège ont-ils été choisis sans parti-pris médiéval ou moderne: ils ont tous rapport à un sujet éminemment actuel à l'époque en question, celui des états successifs qui jalonnent la vie de l'homme, du stade embryonnaire à l'état de félicité ou de damnation éternelles, post-mortem.

David, a member of the Platonic school in Alexandria in the sixth century, is credited with several commentaries on Aristotle's logic: those commentaries, and their Armenian translations, form the subject of this book. An introduction, which discusses David and his place in the Greek and the Armenian traditions, is followed by a series of studies of the relations between the Greek texts and their Armenian translations: the aims are, first, to assess the value of the translations for the constitution of the original Greek, and secondly, to consider the ways in which the Armenian translations adapted the texts to suit their new readership. In 2 Cor. 10-13, as in the entire Pauline corpus, the use of the first person plural is surprising. Paul oscillates between singular ('I') and plural ('We'), sometimes within the same sentence. While this literary feature has never been seriously explored, this study undertakes in the first part an investigation of the meanings of 'we' in ancient Greek texts through several literary genres, from Homer to the Hellenistic period. The second part, devoted to 2 Cor. 10-13, shows the neat architecture of these chapters, and the way the key theological message about weakness (ἀσθένεια) and power (δύναμις) is delivered. Also the occurrences of 'We' and 'I' throughout the text reveal a further underlying theology of authority. En 2 Co 10-13, mais aussi dans l'ensemble du corpus paulinien, l'utilisation de la première personne du pluriel est surprenante. Paul passe souvent du 'je' au 'nous', et inversement, parfois dans la même phrase. Ce trait littéraire n'ayant pas encore été examiné de manière approfondie, la présente étude commence par une enquête sur les sens du 'nous' dans plusieurs genres littéraires - dont le genre épistolaire - d'Homère jusqu'à l'époque hellénistique. La seconde partie, consacrée à 2 Co 10-13, montre l'architecture soignée de ces chapitres ainsi que la manière dont Paul communique le message théologique sur la faiblesse (ἀσθένεια) et la force (δύναμις). L'alternance des 'nous' et des 'je' exprime en outre une véritable théologie de l'autorité apostolique.

Plotinus' fiercely polemical treatise Against the Gnostics has proved peculiarly resistant to modern methods of criticism. So much so, that historians of philosophy frequently end up attributing to Plotinus himself the very beliefs which Plotinus attempts to demolish in his criticism of the Gnostics. Denis O'Brien attempts to unravel this paradox by showing that, in earlier treatises of the Enneads , Plotinus puts forward a theory of the generation of matter by soul, which he then takes for granted in his attack on the Gnostics. This leads to a wholly new understanding of Plotinus' 'theodicy' and of the way in which Plotinus himself conceived of his relation to the Gnostics. Denis O'Brien's analysis should highlight tired commonplaces and support the view that a consistent and original philosophy underlies the complexities and obscurities of the text of the Enneads .

En étudiant la fabrique des héros omeyyades ou des mythes d'origines abbassides, cette étude s'efforce de mettre au jour les significations successives données à l'histoire syrienne, et d'identifier les différentes strates d'écritures et de réécritures de l'histoire au cours des premiers siècles de l'islam. L'ensemble de ces éléments conduit à proposer une histoire du sens de l'espace syrien, articulée autour de la thématique du pouvoir, qui donne une profonde cohérence à la période, par-delà la césure dynastique de 132/750. This book intends to demonstrate that a robust culture of historical writing existed in 2nd/8th century Syria, and to offer new methodological approaches to access this now lost history, torn between memory and oblivion. By studying the making of Umayyad heroes or Abbasid origins-myths, this study aims to reveal the successive meanings granted to Syrian history, and to identify the various layers of historical writing and rewriting during the first centuries of Islam. Taken together, these elements make possible a history of the meaning of the very space of Syria, articulated around power and its expression, which grants a clear coherence to the period, extending well beyond the dynastic caesura of 132/750.

When the tenth-century Kāmil as-sinā'a (or al-Kitāb al-malakī ) of 'Alī ibn al-'Abbās al-Mağūsī was adapted for a Latin-reading audience by Constantine the African in the late eleventh century, the medieval West had, for the first time, the opportunity to use a text which covered the whole of medicine. But the 100-odd extant manuscripts suggest that Contantine's Pantegni was put together over a considerable period of time, and chapters from other Latin and newly-translated Arabic medical works were added to or substituted those of the Kāmil . This book is the first to be devoted to Constantine the African: it sheds light on the School of Salerno and the formation of a medical corpus in the High Middle Ages.

Winner of the 2015 Jozef IJsewijn Prize for best first book on a Neo-Latin topic Early modern commentaries on Statius' Thebaid have been little studied; even that by Barth (1664-5), which holds a conspicuous place among them, has only been taken into account now and then, and often in a rather superficial way. The present book, which makes use of unpublished archival material, offers a comprehensive overview of these works (contexts, contents, interconnections). It is particularly interested in 16th-17th commentators and strives to give Barth's achievement the attention it deserves. By closely looking at the various ways in which the commentaries respond to Statius' poem, but also at the various kinds of discourse they present, it casts a new light on the reception of the Thebaid and on the early modern practice of commentary-writing. Les anciens commentaires imprimés de la Thébaïde de Stace ont été peu étudiés ; même celui de Barth (1664-5), qui occupe parmi eux une place éminente, n'a été pris en compte que de manière ponctuelle et souvent superficielle. Le présent ouvrage, étayé par des documents d'archives inédits, offre un examen général de ces travaux (contextes, contenus, filiations). Il s'intéresse particulièrement aux commentateurs des 16e-17e s. et s'efforce d'accorder à Barth l'attention qu'il mérite. En se penchant sur les différentes façons dont les exégèses répondent au poème de Stace, mais aussi sur les différents types de discours qu'elles présentent, il apporte un éclairage nouveau sur la réception de la Thébaïde et sur la pratique du commentaire au début de l'époque moderne.

Mystery and secrecy were central concepts in the ritual, rhetoric, and sociological stratification of antique Mediterranean religions. That the ultimate nature and workings of the divine were secret, and either could not or should not be revealed except as a mystery for the initiated, was widely accepted among Pagans, Jews, and then Christians, both Gnostic and otherwise. The similarities and differences in the language of mystery and secrecy across religious and cultural borders are thus crucial for understanding this important period of the history of religions. The present anthology aims to present and analyze a wide selection of sources elucidating this theme, reflecting the correspondingly wide scholarly interests of Professor Einar Thomassen in honor of his 60th birthday.
