The present monograph is the first, since 1848, to be entirely devoted to the study of the cereal offerings. Its purpose is to attract attention to a form of sacrifice which was largely neglected and solely considered as an appendix to the animal sacrifice. The study of their substance, ritual and the circumstances in which the cereal offerings are brought to God demonstrates their great complexity as well as their specific function. His vegetarian utopia has led P to give the cereal offerings a prominent place among the sacrifices. A similar appreciation of the cereal offerings is also found among the Essenes, and, finally, in the Christian Last Supper.

Théodicée plotinienne, théodicée gnostique /

Plotinus' fiercely polemical treatise Against the Gnostics has proved peculiarly resistant to modern methods of criticism. So much so, that historians of philosophy frequently end up attributing to Plotinus himself the very beliefs which Plotinus attempts to demolish in his criticism of the Gnostics. Denis O'Brien attempts to unravel this paradox by showing that, in earlier treatises of the Enneads , Plotinus puts forward a theory of the generation of matter by soul, which he then takes for granted in his attack on the Gnostics. This leads to a wholly new understanding of Plotinus' 'theodicy' and of the way in which Plotinus himself conceived of his relation to the Gnostics. Denis O'Brien's analysis should highlight tired commonplaces and support the view that a consistent and original philosophy underlies the complexities and obscurities of the text of the Enneads .

En étudiant la fabrique des héros omeyyades ou des mythes d'origines abbassides, cette étude s'efforce de mettre au jour les significations successives données à l'histoire syrienne, et d'identifier les différentes strates d'écritures et de réécritures de l'histoire au cours des premiers siècles de l'islam. L'ensemble de ces éléments conduit à proposer une histoire du sens de l'espace syrien, articulée autour de la thématique du pouvoir, qui donne une profonde cohérence à la période, par-delà la césure dynastique de 132/750. This book intends to demonstrate that a robust culture of historical writing existed in 2nd/8th century Syria, and to offer new methodological approaches to access this now lost history, torn between memory and oblivion. By studying the making of Umayyad heroes or Abbasid origins-myths, this study aims to reveal the successive meanings granted to Syrian history, and to identify the various layers of historical writing and rewriting during the first centuries of Islam. Taken together, these elements make possible a history of the meaning of the very space of Syria, articulated around power and its expression, which grants a clear coherence to the period, extending well beyond the dynastic caesura of 132/750.

Les termes « messie » et « messianisme » recouvrent aujourd'hui une désignation exagérément large au regard de leur sens initial dans le judaïsme et le christianisme. Ils sont utilisés dans des contextes qui empruntent souvent inconsciemment aux modèles rhétoriques à l'oeuvre dans le judaïsme ancien et dans le christianisme primitif. Le livre s'intéresse à ces modèles qui caractérisent l'histoire intellectuelle du premier messianisme juif. Tout d'abord, l'émergence du messianisme est examinée à travers les modèles de divinisation du roi dans le Proche-Orient ancien (Égypte, Mésopotamie, culture cananéenne), et à travers l'évolution de l'idéologie royale dans l'Israël ancien. D'autre part, les premiers textes chrétiens ont mis en avant la fusion des attentes messianiques en une seule figure de messie (Jésus-Christ), mais la pluralité des figures messianiques semble prévaloir dans la littérature juive ancienne. ____________________________________ The words 'messiah' and 'messianism' are presently used in a too wide significance in comparison with their original meaning in Judaism and Christianity. Nevertheless, they often borrow unconsciously from rhetorical models at work in Ancient Judaism and Christianity. The book constitutes a series of studies on these models which characterize the intellectual history of the first Jewish messianism. Firstly, the birth of messianism is studied across the divinization of kings in Ancient Near East (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Canaanite culture) and secondly, the change of royal ideology in Ancient Israel to messianism. Thirdly, the first Christian texts have promoted the merging of messianic expectations in one messianic figure (Jesus-Christ), but the plurality of messiahs seem to prevail in early Jewish literature.

Mystery and secrecy were central concepts in the ritual, rhetoric, and sociological stratification of antique Mediterranean religions. That the ultimate nature and workings of the divine were secret, and either could not or should not be revealed except as a mystery for the initiated, was widely accepted among Pagans, Jews, and then Christians, both Gnostic and otherwise. The similarities and differences in the language of mystery and secrecy across religious and cultural borders are thus crucial for understanding this important period of the history of religions. The present anthology aims to present and analyze a wide selection of sources elucidating this theme, reflecting the correspondingly wide scholarly interests of Professor Einar Thomassen in honor of his 60th birthday.

In 2 Cor. 10-13, as in the entire Pauline corpus, the use of the first person plural is surprising. Paul oscillates between singular ('I') and plural ('We'), sometimes within the same sentence. While this literary feature has never been seriously explored, this study undertakes in the first part an investigation of the meanings of 'we' in ancient Greek texts through several literary genres, from Homer to the Hellenistic period. The second part, devoted to 2 Cor. 10-13, shows the neat architecture of these chapters, and the way the key theological message about weakness (ἀσθένεια) and power (δύναμις) is delivered. Also the occurrences of 'We' and 'I' throughout the text reveal a further underlying theology of authority. En 2 Co 10-13, mais aussi dans l'ensemble du corpus paulinien, l'utilisation de la première personne du pluriel est surprenante. Paul passe souvent du 'je' au 'nous', et inversement, parfois dans la même phrase. Ce trait littéraire n'ayant pas encore été examiné de manière approfondie, la présente étude commence par une enquête sur les sens du 'nous' dans plusieurs genres littéraires - dont le genre épistolaire - d'Homère jusqu'à l'époque hellénistique. La seconde partie, consacrée à 2 Co 10-13, montre l'architecture soignée de ces chapitres ainsi que la manière dont Paul communique le message théologique sur la faiblesse (ἀσθένεια) et la force (δύναμις). L'alternance des 'nous' et des 'je' exprime en outre une véritable théologie de l'autorité apostolique.

When the tenth-century Kāmil as-sinā'a (or al-Kitāb al-malakī ) of 'Alī ibn al-'Abbās al-Mağūsī was adapted for a Latin-reading audience by Constantine the African in the late eleventh century, the medieval West had, for the first time, the opportunity to use a text which covered the whole of medicine. But the 100-odd extant manuscripts suggest that Contantine's Pantegni was put together over a considerable period of time, and chapters from other Latin and newly-translated Arabic medical works were added to or substituted those of the Kāmil . This book is the first to be devoted to Constantine the African: it sheds light on the School of Salerno and the formation of a medical corpus in the High Middle Ages.

Winner of the 2015 Jozef IJsewijn Prize for best first book on a Neo-Latin topic Early modern commentaries on Statius' Thebaid have been little studied; even that by Barth (1664-5), which holds a conspicuous place among them, has only been taken into account now and then, and often in a rather superficial way. The present book, which makes use of unpublished archival material, offers a comprehensive overview of these works (contexts, contents, interconnections). It is particularly interested in 16th-17th commentators and strives to give Barth's achievement the attention it deserves. By closely looking at the various ways in which the commentaries respond to Statius' poem, but also at the various kinds of discourse they present, it casts a new light on the reception of the Thebaid and on the early modern practice of commentary-writing. Les anciens commentaires imprimés de la Thébaïde de Stace ont été peu étudiés ; même celui de Barth (1664-5), qui occupe parmi eux une place éminente, n'a été pris en compte que de manière ponctuelle et souvent superficielle. Le présent ouvrage, étayé par des documents d'archives inédits, offre un examen général de ces travaux (contextes, contenus, filiations). Il s'intéresse particulièrement aux commentateurs des 16e-17e s. et s'efforce d'accorder à Barth l'attention qu'il mérite. Le devin historien en Mesopotamie is a combined study of divination and historiography. More than mere custodians of historical memory, diviners approached omens as written signs and developed a sophisticated semiology to recognize and order them. Diviners perceived omens as potentially rich in various meanings and cultivated an elaborate hermeneutic for working these out using hypothetical and inductive reasoning. Even if omens were removed from the recorded facts, diviners endowed them with a wide range of possibilities. Divination sought to establish links among historical, cosmic, and natural events because it investigated at once the past, present, and future. The first study of its kind since 1946, when only about 60 historical omens were known, this work presents 385 in a comprehensive edition.
