Islamic mysticism : a short history.

: The book provides a general survey of the history of Islamic mysticism (Sufism) since its inception up to the modern time. It combines chronological and personality-based approaches to the subject with a thematic discussion of principal Sufi notions and institutions. Sufism is examined from a variety of different perspectives: as a vibrant social institution, a specific form of artistic expression (mainly poetic), an ascetic and contemplative practice, and a distinctive intellectual tradition that derived its vitality from a dialogue with other strands of Islamic thought. The book emphasizes the wide variety of Sufism's interactions with the society and its institutions from an ascetic withdrawal from the world to an active involvement in its affairs by individual Sufi masters and organizations. Islamic Mysticism by Knysh is a comprehensive survey of the interesting and fascinating world of Islamic Mysticism.

Islam in South Asia : a short history /

: Islamic South Asia has become a focal point in academia. Where did Muslims come from? How did they fare in interacting with Hindu cultures? How did they negotiate identity as ruling and ruled minorities and majorities? Part I covers early Muslim expansion and the formative phase in context of initial cultural encounter (app. 700-1300). Part II views the establishment of Muslim empire, cultures oscillating between Islamic and Islamicate, centralised and regionalised power (app. 1300-1700). Part III is composed in the backdrop of regional centralisation, territoriality and colonial rule, displaying processes of integration and differentiation of Muslim cultures in colonial setting (app. 1700-1930). Tensions between Muslim pluralism and singularity evolving in public sphere make up the fourth cluster (app. 1930-2002).

Arabic studies in the Netherlands : a short history in portraits, 1580-1950 /

: Arabic is the only living language to have been taught in Dutch higher education for more than four centuries. Practical usefulness, however, has been a prerequisite from the start. Knowledge of Arabic was to promote Dutch interests in the Muslim world, or to help refute Islam. As a cognate of Classical Hebrew, the study of Arabic served as an ancillary science to Biblical studies. Nevertheless, many Arabists such as Thomas Erpenius and Jacobus Golius rose to international distinction. With more than 110 colour illustrations from the Leiden Oriental collections, Arabic Studies in the Netherlands. A Short History in Portraits, 1580-1950 by Arnoud Vrolijk and Richard van Leeuwen will help the reader to gain insight into a fascinating aspect of Dutch intellectual history.

Kleine schriften = Collected short writings of Josef van Ess /

: Kleine Schriften , written by the eminent German scholar of Islamic Studies Josef van Ess, is a unique collection of Van Ess' widely scattered short writings, journal articles, encyclopaedia entries, (autobiographical) essays, reviews and lectures, in (mainly) German, English and French, some of which are published here for the first time. It includes a full bibliography of the author's work, in addition to two indexes of classical authors and works, which aim to make accessible the remarkable riches that these Kleine Schriften have to offer. The three-volume collection, carefully selected by the author himself, offers over 150 texts organized primarily along Van Ess' own biography and the history of the discipline. It is divided into twelve parts, beginning with Tübingen where his career began in 1968, and ending with Retrospects and Postscripts for the future, with the thematic complexes Islam and its first options and Muʿtazila as centre pieces. All parts are introduced by brief accounts of the historical context in which each of the assembled texts was written and which course subsequent scholarship may have taken.

"Alas, Short is the Joy of Life!" Elamite Funerary Practice in the First Half of the First Millennium BCE /

: Recent scholarship has begun to unveil the culturally rich and dynamic landscape of southwest Iran during the first half of the first millennium BCE (aka the Neo-Elamite period) and its significance as the incubation ground for the Persian Empire. In Profiling Death. Neo-Elamite Mortuary Practices, Afterlife Beliefs, and Entanglements with Ancestors , Yasmina Wicks continues the investigation of this critical epoch from the perspective of the mortuary record, bringing forth fascinating clues as to the ritual practices, beliefs, social structures and individual identities of Elam's lowland and highland inhabitants. Enmeshed with its neighbours, yet in many ways culturally distinct, Elam receives its due treatment here as a core component of the ancient Near East.

History in the Public Domain /

: History is a hot topic in popular politics of the public domain. Pressures from different kinds of ideological positions and politics of identities of various kinds put serious constraints on the practice and writing of history. Despite the challenges, scholarship has continued to grow. Current historiographical thrusts illustrate how a whole range of themes and issues are dealt with by professional historians from a variety of perspectives with reference to sources and evidence. For instance, issues relating to the complex interactions between religion and political culture are no longer being swept under the carpet. This collection of short essays and extended discussions on current research aims to intervene in public debates on what exactly happened in history. Given the situation, attempts of this kind can possibly help in somewhat bridging the wide gap between serious academic research and misplaced assumptions of popular histories. Much as historians are accused of merely speaking to themselves (and boring others), they need to be taken seriously when intervening in public debates using specialized historical methods and practices. Historical research conducted in universities can inform popular debates in newspapers, television channels, social media, and roadside dhabas for that matter, to lift the discussion to an informed intellectual plank and to bring about historical literacy and civility in the public domain.

The history of French-speaking Protestantism in Québec /

: Although French-speaking Canadians have largely been Roman Catholic, there has been a small, but significant Protestant minority among them for much of their history. Several important studies on these Protestants have appeared in French or in short articles in English, but there is no broader survey in English. Based on significant archival study, a fresh reading of printed texts and the work of a generation of historians, this collection of essays brings together the work of leading scholars in the field to bring reasoned perspective on various narratives of the history of this often forgotten religious minority. This collection highlights international and inter-confessional networks, the various stages of external and internal mission, the periods of growth and decline, and the cultural and political heritage of these Protestants.

Elisabeth of Luxembourg (1409-1442) : A Hungarian Queen of the 15th Century /

: This book is dedicated to an exceptional and almost forgotten figure of European medieval history, Queen Elisabeth of Luxembourg. Through the story of her life, the author of this volume examines one of the most dramatic periods of Hungarian medieval history (1437-1442), when after the death of Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg, the kingdom lacked a strong monarch. Although the primary focus of this book is Queen Elisabeth, much attention is also paid to her husband, the Duke of Austria and the Roman-German King Albert II of Habsburg. The author reconstructs his short reign in the Kingdom of Hungary on the basis of hitherto unpublished sources, as well as Queen Elisabeth's struggle for the Hungarian crown, which she finally won at the cost of her own life. Through the inclusion of discussions on topics such as the status of women, hygiene, medicine, piety, and travel, the author sheds light not just on the details of Elisabeth's life, but also on life during this period of medieval history more generally.

Trouble in Paradise : Twenty-Four Essays on the Social History of American Art /

: A collection of highly readable critical essays (1977-2023) by a leader in the field of American social art history. Among the subjects Alan Wallach explores are the art of Thomas Cole, patronage of the Hudson River School, so-called "Luminism," the rise of the American art museum, the historiography of American art, scholarship and the art market, as well as the work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Rockwell Kent, Grant Wood, Philip Evergood, and Norman Rockwell. Throughout, Wallach employs a materialist approach to argue against traditional scholarship that considered American art and art institutions in isolation from their social, historical, and ideological contexts. Solomonic Magic : Methodology, Texts, and Histories /

: Solomonic magic has captivated imaginations for centuries, yet its definition remains elusive. Is it a specialized branch linked to King Solomon, or a broader classification of practices attributed to him? This book explores the mysterious world of demon subjugation, examining previously unknown texts in multiple languages (Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and more) to reveal the historical evolution of this magical tradition. Divided into three parts, the book presents analyses of key manuscripts and examines the historical influence of Hebrew texts on later traditions. Featuring many unpublished manuscripts, this book challenges previous scholarly assumptions and offers a new perspective on the textual network that shaped medieval and early modern magical works.

Brill's companion to Herodotus /

: Herodotus' Histories can be read in many ways. Their literary qualities, never in dispute, can be more fully appreciated in the light of recent developments in the study of pragmatics, narratology, and orality. Their intellectual status has been radically reassessed: no longer regarded as naïve and 'archaic', the Histories are now seen as very much a product of the intellectual climate of their own day - not only subject to contemporary literary, religious, moral and social influences, but actively contributing to the great debates of their time. Their reliability as historical and ethnographic accounts, a matter of controversy even in antiquity, is being debated with renewed vigour and increasing sophistication. This Companion offers an up-to-date and in-depth overview of all these current approaches to Herodotus' remarkable work.

Shiraz-I Hind : A History of Jaunpur Sultanate /

: South Asian history of early modern period especially the provincial sultanates is a comparatively less explored area. The emergence of Jaunpur Sultanate in the middle Gangetic belt at the close of the fourteenth century enthused a new dynamism in the economy and culture of the region. Its mono-metallic copper based currency enabled this tiny and short-lived kingdom to maintain its economy and richness of culture. The last work on Jaunpur Sultanate had come out about half a century ago (Saeed, 1972) and it covered only political and cultural history. The present work explores how the Sharqi rulers, with constant help and support of their subjects specially the Rajput allies and landlords maintained a regular flow of money that enabled them to give a new shape to the economy of the entire middle Gangetic belt. Not only new crafts were introduced and promoted by them, new market centres also emerged during the period of this vibrant regional kingdom. Along with extensive use of contemporary Persian literature and numismatic sources the author has for the first time meticulously explored contemporary Hindi literature resources like Kirtilata and Ardhakathanaka to delineate his contention. Hindi epic love-lores or Premakhyan like Chandayan, Mrigavati, Madhumalati and others have been for the first time tapped here at length to trace the influence of the Sharqi kingdom in the field of composite culture. It is hoped that the volume will generate enthusiasm for inquisitive scholars, general readers, students and researchers in India and abroad.
