The Virgin and her Lover : Fragments of an Ancient Greek Novel and a Persian Epic Poem /

Starting from the authors' discovery that the Persian epic poem Vāmiq and ʿAdhrā by ʿUnṣurī (11th century AD) derives from the ancient Greek novel of Mētiokhos and Parthenopē, the book contains critical editions of the Greek and Persian fragments and testimonia, with English translation and comments. The exciting story of the modern recovery of the two texts is told, and the transformations of the productive theme of The ardent lover and the virgin are traced from Greek novel to Persian poem, and through later Persian and Turkish literature. Of particular importance is the authors' attempt to reconstruct the common plot and individual variations, adding a new work to the limited corpus of ancient novels and shedding new light on the genre of Persian epic poetry.

Grundlage bilden eigene Erhebungen mit einem Fragebuch in 65 Orten über das ganze Gebiet verteilt. Dieses Fragebuch orientiert sich an den vorwiegend bäuerlichen Verhältnissen einer Kultur, die bald verschwunden sein wird. Das Zazaki wird nach dem Vorbild von Sprachatlanten europäischer Sprachen flächendeckend dokumentiert und in 280 Karten dargestellt. Die fassen 850 Einzelkarten zusammen. Die Arbeit besteht aus zwei Teilen: einem Theorieteil mit Einleitung und Kartenkommentaren sowie einem Kartenteil. Die ersten beiden Bände bieten einen Einblick in das Material. Es handelt sich um die erste systematische Grundlagenforschung zur Sprachgeographie des Zazaki. Die Arbeit setzt neue Maßstäbe in der Iranistik. Die ersten beiden Bände behandeln die Phonologie. Weitere sechs Bände werden folgen. This work presents a linguistic atlas of Zazaki, a northwestern Iranian language. It documents the linguistic geography of a region that has so far been little studied. The research is based on original fieldwork conducted with a questionnaire in 65 locations across the entire area. This questionnaire is oriented towards the predominantly rural conditions of a culture that is on the verge of disappearing. Zazaki is comprehensively documented following the model of linguistic atlases of European languages and is presented in 280 maps, which summarize 850 individual maps. The work is divided into two parts: a theoretical section with an introduction and map commentaries, and a map section. The first two volumes provide insight into the material. This is the first systematic foundational research on the linguistic geography of Zazaki. The study sets new standards in Iranian studies. The first two volumes focus on phonology. Six additional volumes will follow.

Angelomorphic pneumatology : Clement of Alexandria and other early Christian witnesses /

This book discusses the occurrence of angelic imagery in early Christian discourse about the Holy Spirit. Taking as its entry-point Clement of Alexandria's less explored writings, Excerpta ex Theodoto, Eclogae propheticae, and Adumbrationes, it shows that Clement's angelomorphic pneumatology occurs in tandem with spirit christology, within a theological framework still characterized by a binitarian orientation. This complex theological articulation, supported by the exegesis of specific biblical passages (Zech 4: 10; Isa 11 : 2-3; Matt 18:10), reworks Jewish and Christian traditions about the seven first-created angels, and constitutes a relatively widespread phenomenon in early Christianity. Evidence to support this claim is presented in the course of separate studies of Revelation, the Shepherd of Hermas, Justin Martyr, and Aphrahat.

A catalogue of the Turkish manuscripts in the John Rylands University Library at Manchester

During the six hundred years of its existence, innumerable of manuscripts with, mostly, Turkish texts were produced in the Ottoman Empire. These are mainly preserved in libraries in the countries that once were part of that extended empire; a lesser number of such manuscripts had their origin in central Asia, Persia and India. From the sixteenth century in particular, interest for these handwritten books increased in Europe and found their way to the libraries of scholars, book collectors and universities. The John Rylands University Library is one such repository of Turkish manuscripts of both Ottoman and wider Asian provenance. Most of these manuscripts, among which a number of unique, rare and luxuriously produced items, were originally gathered by a rich mine owner, the 25th Earl of Crawford. In this book, the collection is for the first time described in a detailed and systematic way.

This book charts the development of Islamic ships and boats in the Western Indian Ocean from the seventh to the early sixteenth century with reference to earlier periods. It utilizes mainly Classical and Medieval Arabic sources with iconographical evidence and archaeological finds. Maritime activities in the region resulted in a cross fertilization, not only of goods but also of ideas and culture which gave an underlying cohesion to the Arabian, Persian and Indian maritime peoples. This study has led to a re-evaluation of that maritime culture, showing that it was predominantly Persian and Indian, with Chinese influence, throughout the Islamic period until the coming of the Portuguese, as reflected in nautical terminology and technology.

The Qesse-ye Sanjān is the sole surviving account of the emigration of Zoroastrians from Iran to India to form the Parsi ('Persian') community. This book provides a romanised transcription from the oldest manuscripts, an elegant metrical translation, detailed commentary and, most importantly, a radical new theory of how such a text should be "read", id est not as a historical chronical but as a charter of Zoroastrian identity, foundation myth and justification of the Parsi presence in India. The art of the Hekatompedon inscription and the birth of the stoikhedon style /

The purpose of this book is to present the Hekatompedon Inscription at Athens ( IG I³ 4) as a major monument of Greek art, legitimately on a par with more famous landmarks of the Greek aesthetic tradition like the Parthenon Frieze. Inscribed most probably in the middle of the decade that saw the Greek response to the Persian invasion, the Hekatompedon Inscription has long been recognized for its historical and religious importance. This study looks at the inscription on its own terms: the unique fusion of its visual and textual content in that most Greek of epigraphical layouts, the stoikhedon style. Such an approach leads to the question of origins: where and why was the stoikhedon style formulated and where does the Hekatompedon Inscription stand in that development? Egypt's influential system of proportions and use of grids will be considered determinative for the very first time.

He published his memoirs of Iraq, Kurds, Turks, and Arabs : politics, travel and research in North-Eastern Iraq, 1919-1925 (London - New York, 1957), but his Persian memoirs remained unpublished. It tells how, after studying oriental languages in Cambridge, he became Consular Officer in Bushire, participated in British campaigns in Mesopotamia during First World War. As a Political Officer in Luristan Edmonds was in charge of the oil fields' security and was sent to Northern Persia after the war, a direct witness of the Jangal upheaval and the 1921 coup d'Etat.

This is a facsimile edition of a unique copy of an historical text in Persian, found in some antique shop in Yazd, Iran, several decades ago. The text is incomplete, but must have consisted of at least six chapters ( bāb ). What remains are the last part of chapter four, chapter five, and the first part of chapter six. Chapter four treats of the rulers of Khurāsān until the reign of Muʿizz al-Dīn Aḥmad Sanjar (d. 552/1157-8). Chapter five is about memorable events in Herat, while the remaining part of chapter six c0ntains a listing of the qualities of Herat and Khurāsān. The manuscript bears no title and no author is mentioned. The editors derive title and author from a reference in Muʿīn al-Dīn Isfizārī's (8th/14th cent.) Rawḍāt al-jannāt fī awṣāf madīnat Harāt . The text itself dates from the early 5th/11th, the manuscript from the 8th/14th century. Valuable as an early Persian text on Herat and Khurāsān.

Rūmī and the hermeneutics of eroticism /

This is the first systematic examination of the esoteric significance of the bawdy tales and explicit sexual passages present in Rūmī's (d. 1273) Mathnawī , a masterpiece of medieval Perso-Islamic mystical literature and theosophic teachings. Using the relevant features of postmodern theories as strategic conceptual tools, and drawing on the recent interpretations of medieval kabbalistic texts, it is a fascinating examination of the link between the dynamics of eroticism and esotericism operative in Rūmī's Mathnawī . In some of these bawdy tales, the phallus is used as an esoteric symbol. The book concludes that these tales are used primarily to communicate esoteric secrets, particularly when this communication is contemplated along gender lines, mediated through erotic imagery, or expressed in sexual terms.

The religious movement known as Bābism profoundly affected Iranian society during the 1840s. In this first full systematic effort to set these authors within the framework of Greco-Roman traditions, Professor Sterling has used genre criticism as a method for locating a distinct tradition of historical writing, apologetic historiography. Apologetic historiography is the story of a subgroup of people which deliberately Hellenizes the traditions of the group in an effort to provide a self-definition within the context of the larger world. It arose as a result of a dialectic relationship with Greek ethnography. This work traces the evolution of this tradition through three major eras of eastern Mediterranean history spanning six hundred years: the Persian, the Greek, and the Roman.
