LBK realpolitik : an archaeometric study of conflict and social structure in the Belgian early Neolithic /
:
The causes and consequences of violence and warfare have long interested social scientists, historians, and philosophers. While economic motivations for conflict are among the most commonly discussed drivers of human violence, prehistorians have often downplayed economic factors when studying non-state society. This volume explores linkages between conflict and socioeconomic organization during the early Neolithic of eastern Belgium (c.5200-5000 BC), using compositional analysis of ceramics from Linienbandkeramik villages to assess production organization and map intercommunity connections against the backdrop of increasing evidence for conflict.

Chapters on the geography of Thucydides and Alexander III, imperial geography, tracking letters and using sundials round out the second half of the book.

Research in the social scientific study of religion.
:
Research in the Social Scientific Study of Religion publishes empirical and theoretical studies of religion from a wide range of disciplines and from all parts of the globe. This volume has a special section on Islam and Mental Health, an important and neglected area of study. The section draws on work, from six countries, that have applied different theoretical frameworks and empirical methods to examine the link between religion, psychology, and health in very diverse Muslim communities. Other articles examine topics as diverse as spirituality, psychological health, conversion, and the cultural psychology of religion. Disciplines represented include those that draw on qualitative, quantitative, and theoretical methods of study which together represent an important contribution to the contemporary study of religion.

Studies in Matthew's gospel : literary design, intertextuality, and social setting /
:
These Studies in Matthew's Gospel by Wim J.C. Weren are the result of scholarly work carried out using recent methods in Biblical exegesis such as structural analysis, text semantics and intertextuality. Part One presents a new proposal regarding the macrostructure of Matthew's Gospel and discusses meanings of textual units from this Gospel on the basis of synchronic research. In Part Two, intertextual theories are described and practical tools are developed that enable us to identify various types of relations between texts from Matthew's Gospel and co-generic or co-thematic textual units from the Hebrew Bible, the Septuagint and early Jewish and early Christian writings. Part Three answers the question to what extent the ways in which the disciples are portrayed in Matthew is related to 'real' groups in the Matthean communities. The three successive steps are deliberately chosen and are in a complementary relationship to each other.

Thinking with Marx Today, Volume 2 : "Man?" /
:
Instead of abstract "man," Marx argued that there is an ensemble of societal relations that underpins social formations of various kinds as well as a variety of forms of individuality. In this second volume of Thinking with Marx Today, Lucien Sève presents what he calls Marx's revolution in anthropology. He deftly analyzes the philosophical preconditions and the fundamental concepts of this anthropology. This is followed by critiques of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and contemporary primatology coupled with borrowings from Freud, Politzer, Vygotsky, and contemporary literature on biography. Sève's aim is nothing less than to outline a science of human individuality.

Grounding Critique : Marxism, Concept Formation, and Embodied Social Relations /
:
Grounding Critique: Marxism, Concept Formation, and Embodied Social Relations argues that marxism must have a robust understanding of embodied social relations, such as race, gender, and sexuality, in order to produce the knowledge necessary for transformative social change. Tanyildiz subjects two important strands of marxist social theory -marxist-feminism and social reproduction theory- to a methodological examination and demonstrates their shortcomings. Focusing on these strands' critiques of intersectionality as a moment of crystallization in concept formation, Grounding Critique explores alternative ways of using Marx's method to understand contemporary human praxis. Punjab in Prosperity and Violence : Administration, Politics and Social Change, 1947-1997 /
:
Based on papers written for seminar on 'decolonization' and 'contemporary history' of the Punjab, organized by the Institute of Punjab Studies which aims at promoting inter-disciplinary study of the political, economic, social and cultural life of the peoples of the north-west of India, this book should be of great interest to administrators, politicians and journalists as well as to social scientists and general readers. It gives useful insights into administration, politics, violence, demographic change, and the condition of the relatively unprivileged 'fragments' of the society in the region - women, dalits, labourers and village communities.

Positive peace : reflections on peace education, nonviolence, and social change /
:
Positive Peace is a scholarly and creative compilation of articles on peace education, nonviolence and social change. Arun Gandhi (grandson of Mahatma Gandhi) sets the scene in his introduction with the challenge that positive peace is both a resisting of the physical violence of war and the passive violence of the psychological structures that lead to conflict. Peace education rises to meet that challenge. In twelve chapters, philosophers and educators look at a variety of topics from Gandhian nonviolence, to pragmatic conflict solving; hope and the ethics of belief, to the way we use violent language; mothering and peace activism, to multiculturalism and peace. Recurring themes are: pragmatic nonviolence, the ethics of care as an antidote to violence, and hope in a violent world. Chapters on the use of film in peace education, song and nonviolent activism, and teaching art history and peace, demonstrate pragmatic possibilities for would-be peace educators. Arun Gandhi in his introduction asks, "For generations human beings have strived to attain peace, but with little or no success. ... Why is peace so illusive? Is it unattainable? Are humans incapable of living in peace?" This book suggests that peace education has a large part to play. It is an important attempt to begin to meet the challenge.

Climate Change Litigation in Japan : Cases, Challenges, and Opportunities for Environmental Law /
:
This book provides the details of Japanese climate litigation, positioning them both within the global trends of climate litigation and on the trajectory of Japanese past pollution lawsuits. It identifies the barriers that hinders the number of climate cases in Japan, a country known with a significant low litigation use. It then discusses the future prospects for climate change litigation in Japan by comparing with tobacco litigation in the United States. This original work makes a significant contribution to the international academic community, by describing Japan's climate cases, previously little known internationally.

The Fragile Juggernaut : Marx & Engels on Capitalism, Class Struggle and Crisis /
:
Whether loving or hating it, many visualize capitalism as an unstoppable juggernaut. For those of us who would defeat it, we must identify its weaknesses. Fortunately, Marx and Engels' writings on "crisis" reveal them. They show how its endless imposition of exploitative and alienating work creates such antagonistic conflicts everywhere as to make it, ultimately, a far more fragile monster than it first appears. Each of its efforts to shape social relationships, subordinating them to the work of commodity production and its control over society, has been and can be thrown into crisis by those of us resisting its way of life and seeking to create more appealing alternatives.

Religion and diversity in Canada /
:
Canada officially prides itself on being a multicultural nation, welcoming people from all around the world, and enshrining that status in its Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as in an array of laws and policies that aim to protect citizens from discrimination on various grounds, including race, cultural origin, sexual orientation, and religion. This volume explores the intersection of these diversities, foregrounding religion as the primary focus of analysis. Taking as their point of departure the contested meaning and implications of the term diversity, the various contributions address issues such as the power relations that diversity implies, the cultural context that limits the understanding and practical acceptance of religious diversity, and how Canada compares in these matters to other countries. Taken together the essays therefore elucidate the Canadian case while also having relevance for understanding this critical issue globally.

Early Indian Architecture : Palaces /
:
Traditionally, Indian architecture is divided into sacred and royal structures. Palaces in the Indian subcontinent are the most important landmarks associated with Indian heritage. This slim volume focuses on the architectural features associated with prasada, or palace structures constructed during the ancient and medieval times. Coomaraswamy examines the features associated with palace structures such as pillars, walls, apartments, streets, gateways, quarters of the royal members, windows, arches, facades, etc., and the materials which were use for its construction. The author looks at both literary and archaeological evidences. The book also uses photographs and sketches of various palace structures located in Bharhut, Sanchi, Amravati, Mammallapuram, Bengal, and other parts of India to explain the features associated with Indian styles of palace construction. This book is highly recommended for students, archaeologists, and researchers interested in ancient and medieval Indian art and architecture.

Hand-Book on Rajputs : History and Origin, Geographical Distribution, Religion, Custom, and Festivals /
:
Author A.H. Bingley gives a concise study of the Rajputs in Hand Book on Rajputs , covering various aspects relating to them, so that the reader gets an overview of the Rajputs. He begins with the origins of the Rajputs, briefly touching on ancient Rajput kingdoms, foundation of the Lunar and Solar races, invasions of Muslims, Greeks, the Mughals, raising of Imperial troops, role played by the Rajputs in the Mutiny and provides many other details as well. Bingley devotes the remaining chapters to their classification; festivals, customs and religion; general characteristics; and Rajput recruitments. Under classification, Bingley has listed 78 clans, covering their geographical distribution, history, religion followed and clans they can intermarry with. The chapter on social and religious matters, including their customs pertaining to birth, death, marriage, and other ceremonies like child naming ceremony, and the like. The festivals have been presented in a tabular format, which also includes a brief description of the festivals listed. In the other two chapters, Bingley talks about generalities like habits of the eastern and western Rajputs, religion, food and clothing, and more, which gives an insight into their life and social structure; while the chapter on recruitment reads more like a guidebook for British officers when inducting Rajputs into the army. The author has used a lucid language, and drawn references from several books that he has listed early on in 'Hand-Book'. In addition to two maps, Bingley has provided appendices as well.

The books of Kings : sources, composition, historiography and reception /
:
This collaborative commentary on, or dictionary of, Kings, explores cross-cutting aspects of Kings ranging from the analysis of its composition, historically regarded, to its transmission and reception. Ample attention is accorded sources, figures and peoples who play a part in the book. The commentary deals with Kings' treatment in translation and role in later ancient literature. While our comments do not proceed verse by verse, the volume furnishes guidance, from contributors highly qualified to advance contemporary discussion, on the book's historical background, its literary intentions and characteristics, and on themes and motifs central to its understanding, both of itself and of the world from which it arose. This volume functions as a meta-commentary, offering windows into the secondary literature, but assembling data more fully than is the case in individual commentaries.

The Protection of Civilians in Peacekeeping Operations : A Legal Obligation /
:
While the Security Council has been mandating peacekeepers to protect civilians since 1999, there is still contention on its legal meaning. Even though the concept of 'protection' can seem self-evident, as the concept of 'protection' is borrowed language, each body of law will perceive 'protection' through a different lens. However, as the mandate creates a legal obligation on UN peace missions, a clear understanding of protection is fundamental to ensure performance and accountability.

Experiencing Etruscan pots : ceramics, bodies and images in Etruria /
:
In a world without plastics, ceramics, alongside organic containers, were used for almost every substance which required protection or containment: from perfume to porridge. The experience of an Etruscan person, living day to day, would have been filled with interactions with ceramics, making them objects which can recall intimate transactions in the past to the archaeologist in the present. Characterising that experience of Etruscan pottery is the concern of this book. What was it like to use and live with Etruscan pottery? How was the interaction between an Etruscan pot structured and constituted? How can that experience be related back to bigger questions about the organisation of Etruscan society, its increasingly urban nature and relationship with other Mediterranean cultures?
