Technology, Power and Society : Critical Perspectives on the Global Digital Transformation /

: Technology, Power and Society: Critical Perspectives on the Global Digital Transformation offers a critical exploration of how digitalization, datafication, and automation impact societies worldwide, with a particular focus on underrepresented and understudied contexts. This interdisciplinary volume unpacks the sociopolitical dynamics of new technologies, investigating their potential to empower, disrupt, and transform social structures across varied cultural landscapes. The book takes a broad view at various critical issues pertaining to digital media technologies and the socio-cultural challenges that come with their rise: How do big tech platforms try to dominate Internet access in the Global South? To what extent can they offer ways for resistance, where do they post risks for activists? How do current technology discourses maintain gender stereotypes and imbalances? How do visions of AI differ between political cultures? And how can we develop methodologies capable of capturing the complexity of global technology trends and their local manifestations? By bringing together global perspectives, this collection moves beyond conventional narratives to foster a nuanced understanding of how digital transformations both challenge and reshape local contexts.

: This volume deals with a phenomenon of increasing global significance, the South Asian diaspora. In particular it deals with the role of religion. The diversity of religious life in South Asia is remarkable and much of this diversity is replicated in the diaspora communities around the world. The case studies in this book explore and analyse the social, religious and cultural reality of people in the diaspora belonging to Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism and originating from four of the South Asian nation states (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka). The book highlights the religious diversity that exists in the diaspora communities both across the traditions and within the particular religions.

Islam in South Asia : a short history /

: Islamic South Asia has become a focal point in academia. Where did Muslims come from? How did they fare in interacting with Hindu cultures? How did they negotiate identity as ruling and ruled minorities and majorities? Part I covers early Muslim expansion and the formative phase in context of initial cultural encounter (app. 700-1300). Part II views the establishment of Muslim empire, cultures oscillating between Islamic and Islamicate, centralised and regionalised power (app. 1300-1700). Part III is composed in the backdrop of regional centralisation, territoriality and colonial rule, displaying processes of integration and differentiation of Muslim cultures in colonial setting (app. 1700-1930). Tensions between Muslim pluralism and singularity evolving in public sphere make up the fourth cluster (app. 1930-2002).
