Research in the social scientific study of religion.
:
Research in the Social Scientific Study of Religion publishes empirical and theoretical studies of religion from a wide range of disciplines and from all parts of the globe. This volume has a special section on Islam and Mental Health, an important and neglected area of study. The section draws on work, from six countries, that have applied different theoretical frameworks and empirical methods to examine the link between religion, psychology, and health in very diverse Muslim communities. Other articles examine topics as diverse as spirituality, psychological health, conversion, and the cultural psychology of religion. Disciplines represented include those that draw on qualitative, quantitative, and theoretical methods of study which together represent an important contribution to the contemporary study of religion.

State, religion, and Muslims : between discrimination and protection at the legislative, executive, and judicial levels /
:
"State, Religion and Muslims: Between Discrimination and Protection at the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Levels brings together the academics from different academic disciplines and offers an in-depth analysis of discrimination against Muslims in western countries affecting them in specific areas of life. The volume provides a comprehensive look at the legislative, executive and judicial dimensions of discrimination across the 12 Western countries situating discriminatory practices in their institutional framework with a multidisciplinary look. Exploring the most formidable aspects of the discrimination against Muslims - education, employment, exercise of religion, state relations with religious communities and hate crime and hate speech - the volume illustrates that the individual, structural and institutional discrimination against Muslims living in western countries has become a routine".

Women, Gender and Language in Morocco /
:
This volume deals with the complex but poorly understood relationship between women, gender, and language in Morocco, a Muslim, multilingual, multicultural, and developing country. The hypothesis on which the book is based is that an understanding of gender perception and women's agency can be achieved only by taking into account the structure of power in a specific culture and that language is an important component of this power. In Moroccan culture, history, geography, Islam, orality, multilingualism, social organization, economic status, and political system constitute the superstructures of power within which factors such as social differences, contextual differences, and identity differences interact in the daily linguistic performances of gender. Moroccan women are far from constituting a homogeneous group, consequently the choices available to them vary in nature and empowering capacity, thus 'widening' the spectrum of gender beyond cultural limits.

Socio-Poiesis: A Theory on Liberation and Suffering : Toward a New Ethics of Shared Creation and Emancipation /
:
Socio-Poiesis is a neologism coined to integrate and intersect theory and practice across several branches of the humanities, including social sciences, psychoanalysis, practical wisdom, Eastern philosophies, ethics, household management, and political philosophy. In this theory, there is a significant point of convergence with the ideas of thinkers like Erich Fromm, Adam Schaff, Adam Blaner, Jacob Moreno, Robin George Collingwood, and others.

Rethinking Media and Communication : A Critical Sociological Lens /
:
In this book, the authors address critical questions about the role of media and communication in capitalist societies. How do power structures shape communication processes? How are inequalities reinforced across different levels of society-micro, mezzo, and macro? Drawing on sociology, political economy, media studies and related fields, the book offers fresh insights into how communication supports capitalist domination, from media commodification to media concentration. It calls for a rethinking of how communication affects social relations and how social relations influence communication, exposing its deep connection to economic and political power. This book is essential for anyone seeking to understand the forces shaping today's media landscape.

Technology, Power and Society : Critical Perspectives on the Global Digital Transformation /
:
Technology, Power and Society: Critical Perspectives on the Global Digital Transformation offers a critical exploration of how digitalization, datafication, and automation impact societies worldwide, with a particular focus on underrepresented and understudied contexts. This interdisciplinary volume unpacks the sociopolitical dynamics of new technologies, investigating their potential to empower, disrupt, and transform social structures across varied cultural landscapes. The book takes a broad view at various critical issues pertaining to digital media technologies and the socio-cultural challenges that come with their rise: How do big tech platforms try to dominate Internet access in the Global South? To what extent can they offer ways for resistance, where do they post risks for activists? How do current technology discourses maintain gender stereotypes and imbalances? How do visions of AI differ between political cultures? And how can we develop methodologies capable of capturing the complexity of global technology trends and their local manifestations? By bringing together global perspectives, this collection moves beyond conventional narratives to foster a nuanced understanding of how digital transformations both challenge and reshape local contexts.

Non-Marxian Historical Materialism: Reconstructions and Comparisons /
:
The authors of this book reconstruct the philosophical, methodological and theoretical assumptions of non-Marxian historical materialism, a theory of historical process authored by Leszek Nowak (1943-2009), a co-founder of the Poznań School of Methodology. In the first part of the book, philosophical assumptions of this theory are compared with the concepts of Robert Nozick, Immanuel Wallerstein, André Gunder Frank and analytical Marxism. In the second part, non-Marxian historical materialism is compared with the concepts of Eva Etzioni-Halevy, Andrzej Falkiewicz, Robert Michels, Vilfredo Pareto, Theda Skocpol and Karl August Wittfogel.

Health and ritual in Morocco : conceptions of the body and healing practices /
:
In Health and Ritual in Morocco , Josep Lluis Mateo Dieste analyzes the many notions of the body that appear in various Moroccan medical and religious systems. Viewing these issues from anthropological and historical perspectives to the development of Islamic medicine in Morocco, this study highlights the elements of power that define these representations and practices. Mateo Dieste shows that most of the healing rituals challenge the strict division between physical and mental afflictions. Health and Ritual in Morocco provides a valuable structure for understanding Moroccan conceptions of the person, rites of passage, gender differences, and reproductive practices. It offers insights into the weight of the notions of impurity and purification of the body in the daily life of the contemporary Moroccan population.

Narrative, Film, and Identity : How Cinema Impacts the Meaning of Life /
:
Our identities are shaped by narratives, and cinema contributes to that process. While there is substantial scholarship on both narrative identity and film narrative, there is very little investigation of the intersection between them. This book provides that, with particular attention to how the interaction between film narratives and life narratives affect the meaning of life. Traditional issues like spectator activity and realism appear in a different light when viewed through this interaction. It also reveals how film can both help and hinder the meaning of our lives by sustaining oppressive narratives or promoting new narrative possibilities. See Less

Pedagogy of Change according to André Giordan /
:
"Changing pedagogy" changes everything. The adoption and implementation of the modified pedagogy begins with critical reflections related to teaching and learning, and the implementation of the pedagogy of change begins with personal experience and the need to change the world in the micro-, meso-, and macro-dimensions. The idea of this book is to show how a man's destiny is closely linked to his activity. This is proven by a biographical analysis of André Giordan's course of life in the heterocentric aspect, because - as Charlotte Bühler argues - it makes it possible to trace the main ideas and products of the researcher's thought when the individual in his expansion is replaced by the expansion of his own productions. In analyzing André Giordan's social and scientific activity, it is impossible to ignore the dynamics of creative passion, especially in the context of the influence of the social environment on the development of the individual. The positive multi-layered and multifaceted disintegration (according to Kazimierz Dąbrowski's theory) fostered creative development. The different "levels" of this development are responsible for the formation of experience and find expression in the structure of work and in the various forms of expression.

Beguiling Guidance : Zechariah Alḍāhirī's Sefer Hamusar, a Hebrew Maqāma from 16th-Century Yemen /
:
The only Hebrew picaresque maqāma from Yemen, Sefer hamusar captivates its readers with trickster tales of wandering and adventure while offering moral guidance and a spiritual ascent via kabbalistic study. In Beguiling Guidance , Adena Tanenbaum explores these tensions, along with the literary, social-historical, philosophical, and kabbalistic aspects of Sefer hamusar , and situates the work in its broader 16th-century framework. Applying a fresh reading, she analyzes Alḍāhirī's maqāma as a rich repository of intellectual history; treats his travel narratives as composites of fiction and fact; and uncovers the cultural assumptions and self-definitions underlying his representations of Muslims, which she shows to be far more variegated and nuanced than previously acknowledged. Beguiling Guidance should appeal to readers interested in transregional cultural exchange and the diffusion of texts; pre-modern fiction and travel writing; and Muslim-Jewish power relations in the late medieval/early modern Middle East. It also serves as an introduction to the vibrant culture of a Jewish community that traced its presence in South Arabia back to antiquity.

Jewish Immigrants, Nationalism and Finance Sourcing in Argentina : Otherness and Industrial Entrepreneurship /
:
"The book represents an innovative and outstanding contribution to the economic, social, and business history of Argentina. It focuses on the factors that conditioned the emergence and development, between 1930 and the early 1960s, of large industrial enterprises founded by Jewish immigrants, with emphasis on the absence of community financial institutions to support their creation and expansion. lt is characterized both by the relevance of the issues it addresses and by the author's ability to conduct original and solid research based on a non-dogmatic conceptual framework, on the analysis of a wide variety of unexplored sources, and the virtuous combination of different scales of observation." (Un)Learning to Be Human? : Collected Essays on Critical Posthumanism, Volume 1 /
:
Critical posthumanism is a theory paradigm that has become hugely influential across the humanities and social sciences in the last twenty years. This volume collects essays written over the last decade by one of the founders and leading figures of this movement. Originally a reaction to accelerated technological and media change that challenges traditional notions of what it means to be human, posthumanism (as opposed to transhumanism) has developed into a general critique and reappraisal of life after humanism and anthropocentrism. The essays collected here are dealing with aspects of education, technology, politics, media and art, and share a focus on how to critique and unlearn traditional understandings of humanness and (re)learn what it means to be human differently.

An arena for higher powers : ceremonial buildings and religious strategies for rulership in late Iron Age Scandinavia /
:
In An Arena for Higher Powers Olof Sundqvist investigates ceremonial buildings and religious ruler strategies in Late Iron Age Scandinavia (i.e. AD 550-1050/1100). The author offers here an account of the role played by religion in political undertakings among the pre-Christian ruling elites at halls and cultic buildings. Sundqvist applies a regional approach, so as to be able to account for the specific historical, cultural and social contexts. The focus is mainly on three regions, the Lake Mälaren area in Sweden, Trøndelag in Norway, and Iceland. Since the political structure and other contextual aspects partly differed in the three regions, the religious strategies for gaining legitimacy and authorization at the sanctuaries also varied to some extent in these areas.

Bridging the Gulf : Maritime Cultural Heritage of the Western Indian Ocean /
:
The volume presents papers by archaeologists, anthropologists, historians and heritage specialists and highlights the multi-layered meaning of maritime cultural landscapes. The authors shift the emphasis from understanding heritage in its local context to discussing it across the waters of the Arabian Sea. The relationship between the sea and the land underlines the centrality of the coast; the communities who inhabited the space between the ocean and the hinterland; their histories and attempts at constructing their cultural environment. An important component of this cultural landscape is monumental architecture and archaeological sites, as also their inter-linkage with travelling groups who moved both across the sea, as well as on routes into the interior. A common concern that all papers share is with definitions of maritime heritage; different articulations of social and political power; and regional and local nautical traditions. One of the objectives of this volume is to underscore the important role of World Heritage, especially sites and monuments located along the coasts that have already been identified as national treasures by individual Nation States. The objective is to bring these coastal monuments and structures into dialogue with those located across the Ocean for a holistic understanding of maritime cultural heritage of the western Indian Ocean. It is suggested that this dialogue across the seas, would help in the protection and preservation of a maritime heritage known for its 'outstanding universal value'.

The "God of Israel" in History and Tradition /
:
In The "God of Israel" in History and Tradition , Michael Stahl provides a foundational study of the formulaic title "god of Israel" ( 'elohe yisra'el ) in the Hebrew Bible. Employing critical theory on social power and identity, and through close literary and historical analysis, Dr. Stahl shows how the epithet "god of Israel" evolved to serve different social and political agendas throughout the course of ancient Israel and Judah's histories. Reaching beyond the field of Biblical Studies, Dr. Stahl's treatment of the historical and ideological significances of the title "god of Israel" in the Hebrew Bible offers a fruitful case study into the larger issue of the ways in which religion may shape-and be shaped by-social and political structures.

Leadership and Initiative in Late Republican and Early Imperial Rome /
:
What does it mean to be a leader? This collection of seventeen studies breaks new ground in our understanding of leadership in ancient Rome by re-evaluating the difference between those who began a political action and those who followed or reacted. In a significant change of approach, this volume shifts the focus from archetypal "leaders" to explore the potential for individuals of different ranks, social statuses, ages, and genders to seize initiative. In so doing, the contributors provide new insight into the ways in which the ability to initiate communication, invent solutions, and prompt others to act resonated in critical moments of Roman history.
