During the final four centuries BC, many political and stateless entities of the Mediterranean headed towards anarchy and militarism, while stronger powers -Carthage, the Hellenistic kingdoms and Republican Rome- expanded towards State formation, forceful military structures and empire building. Edited by T. Ñaco del Hoyo and F. López Sánchez, this volume presents the proceedings from an ICREA Conference held in Barcelona (2013), addressing the connection between war, warlords and interstate relations from classical studies and social sciences perspectives. Some twenty scholars from European, Japanese and North American Universities consider the scope of 'multipolarity' and the usefulness of 'warlord', a modern category, in order to feature some ancient military and political leaderships.

Ottoman Provincial Society and the Waqf of Jerusalem, 1703-1831 /

This book examines early modern Jerusalem's waqf system through an Ottoman provincial lens, analyzing how diverse social groups engaged with these endowments in judicial contexts. Conceptualizing waqf s-central to the city's socioeconomic fabric and urban identity-as an interconnected " waqf network", the research demonstrates the commodification of waqf offices among elites, and their enduring control over pious foundations. These processes reveal how provincial power structures mediated between imperial standards and local interests. Focusing on notable families who monopolized waqf -related privileges, the work reconstructs Jerusalemite society through multiple frameworks: imperial waqf policies, social hierarchies, notable-commoner relations, and intercommunal dynamics-positioning endowments as both economic assets and instruments of governance. Bu kitap, erken modern dönem Kudüs'ündeki vakıf sistemini Osmanlı taşra perspektifinden incelemekte ve çeşitli sosyal grupların bu vakıflarla hukuki bağlamda nasıl etkileşime girdiğini analiz etmektedir. Kentin sosyo-ekonomik dokusu ve kentsel kimlğinin merkezinde yer alan vakıfları birbiriyle bağlantılı bir "vakıf ağı" olarak kavramsallaştıran araştırma, seçkinler arasında vakıf görevlerinin metalaşması ve bu kesimin hayır kurumları üzerindeki kalıcı denetimlerini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu süreçler, taşradaki güç yapılarının imparatorluk standartlarıyla yerel menfaatler arasında nasıl aracılık ettiğini gözler önüne sermektedir. Lucretius and the late Republic : an essay in Roman intellectual history /

The crisis Rome experienced in the last decades of the Republic was intellectual as well as political, social and military. This crisis was marked by conflicts over values and a growing dichotomy between words and things, as a result of which the key words of the Roman tradition lost their anchor in the inherited, commonly-held percepetion of reality known as the mos maiorum . The crisis was therefore also one of the Latin language itself. The monograph explores this thesis in discussions of the background and character of Roman intellectual history, the nature of the mos maiorum , the relationship of the Late Republic to the Mediterranean world, the roles of Julius Caesar, Catullus, Cicero, and Lucretius in the crisis, and its Augustan and later consequences. The major portion of the discussion is devoted to Lucretius, because the De Rerum Natura is the clearest example of the extent and nature of the crisis, from which it took its origin and gained its form and purpose. A principal goal of the essay is to relate Lucretius to the structure of Roman literary and intellectual history. It finds the explanation for his work in the nature of that history and the characteristic Roman modes and categories of thought rather than in the general history fo Greek philosophy. It also offers a new explanation of the relationshiop of the authors of the Late Republic to each other. In so doing, it indicates the foundation for a new history of Roman literature and a new conception of the reality and importance of the intellectual history of Rome.

Kaṭṭaikūttu : The Flexibility of a South Indian Theatre Tradition /

This book gives an insight into Kaṭṭaikkūttu, a living Tamil theatre tradition. Taking the perspective of performers as a starting point, it analyses how this theatre tradition has been able to adjust itself to changing conditions and challenges because of its inherent flexibility. The phenomenon of flexibility pervades both the formation and internal arrangements of theatre companies and the actual performances themselves. The first part of the book focuses on Kaṭṭaikkūttu in its historical and social context. It traces the theatre's disengagement from its organic embedding in the social and ritual village organization and its transition towards a more autonomous and more professional regional theatre form during the last fifty to hundred years. This transformation was accompanied by processes of professionalization and commercialization, which had their impact on the practitioners and the performances. The second part of the book provides a detailed analysis of the working of oral Kaṭṭaikkūttu texts in performance. Through a flexible handling of the oral - verbal and musical - material within the boundaries of a relatively fixed framework underlying these texts, Kaṭṭaikkūttu performers try to fulfill to the best of their abilities the demands of sponsors, audiences and occasions.

Women's agency and rituals in mixed and female Masonic orders /

Women have been structurally part of the masonic enterprise from at least the middle of the 18th century. Yet, little is known about the ways in which they themselves obtained and exercised power to influence the systems they were involved in, in order to adapt them to be more appropriate to their needs. This volume intends to concentrate on two aspects: Women's agency (i.e. the power women gained and exercised in this context) and rituals (i.e. the role of men and women in changing and shaping the rituals women work with). These two aspects are closely related, since it requires some agency to realise changes in existing rituals.
