This book examines the nature of the early church from a Petrine perspective, employing an analysis of register to implement a more synthetic study of relevant texts in the New Testament. Liu utilises a type of discourse analysis that provides a framework for classifying grammatical and lexical information so that the reader can better understand the social function of not only Peter's speeches in Acts, but also the two epistles attributed to him. Liu's original and detailed study looks at the content and structure of the texts to enhance our understanding of the early church, with particular attention paid to the dichotomy between Petrine and Pauline Christianity and their competing pictures of Christian origins. Author A.H. Bingley gives a concise study of the Rajputs in Hand Book on Rajputs , covering various aspects relating to them, so that the reader gets an overview of the Rajputs. He begins with the origins of the Rajputs, briefly touching on ancient Rajput kingdoms, foundation of the Lunar and Solar races, invasions of Muslims, Greeks, the Mughals, raising of Imperial troops, role played by the Rajputs in the Mutiny and provides many other details as well. Bingley devotes the remaining chapters to their classification; festivals, customs and religion; general characteristics; and Rajput recruitments. Under classification, Bingley has listed 78 clans, covering their geographical distribution, history, religion followed and clans they can intermarry with. The chapter on social and religious matters, including their customs pertaining to birth, death, marriage, and other ceremonies like child naming ceremony, and the like. The festivals have been presented in a tabular format, which also includes a brief description of the festivals listed. In the other two chapters, Bingley talks about generalities like habits of the eastern and western Rajputs, religion, food and clothing, and more, which gives an insight into their life and social structure; while the chapter on recruitment reads more like a guidebook for British officers when inducting Rajputs into the army. The author has used a lucid language, and drawn references from several books that he has listed early on in 'Hand-Book'. In addition to two maps, Bingley has provided appendices as well.

Kerala's Puḷḷuvas and Pāmpum Tuḷḷal : An Ethnography of Ritual Practice /

Kerala's Puḷḷuvas and Pāmpum Tuḷḷal is a story about the lives of Kerala's Puḷḷuva ritual specialists and their days-long ritual performance, pāmpum tuḷḷal, or the "jumping dance" of the serpent deities (nāgam or pāmpu). The ritual is commissioned by members of Kerala's landed communities to bring health and prosperity to their extended families. Belonging to an ancient South Indian tradition, the ritual is orchestrated by Puḷḷuva ritual specialists, who hold the sole hereditary right to perform it. This book is the first in Kerala to approach this ritual tradition from the viewpoints and agency of its Dalit (formerly known as 'untouchable') ritual specialists-men and women, and to examine Puḷḷuva ritual practice in the context of rapid and extensive social change. The study sheds important light upon Puḷḷuva rituals, lives, and livelihoods, within the broader contexts of changing class, caste, and kinship relations; land tenure and ritual patronage; labour migration; and the decline of Nāyar matrilineality and old landed families. These wide-ranging social trends, indexed and acted out in ritual, are the backdrop for understanding Puḷḷuva ritual practice from the 1980s, and in terms of history, point to multiple structures and hierarchies of practice and meaning. The combination of the focused study of ritual performance and traditional ethnography allows readers to witness the ritual practices and lives of members of a small, real-world community rendered virtually absent from the historical record. It's extraordinary to hear from Puḷḷuvas in their own words and to witness their dedication to their sacred profession, at a time when the world they knew was rapidly falling apart. But thirty-plus years later, the story-at least for now, has a happy ending; both Puḷḷuvas and pāmpum tuḷḷal are thriving.
