The present volume was compiled as a respectful tribute to A.S. van der Woude and presented to him on the occasion of his 65th birthday, which coincided with his retirement as professor of Old Testament and Intertestamental Studies at the University of Groningen, a chair he held for more than thirty years. The title of this Festschrift , The Scriptures and the Scrolls , reflects the two fields of study to which he has devoted his scholarly life, not only by doing research himself, but also by stimulating many of his colleagues to collaborate in publications initiated by him. In 4QSamuelᵃ and the Text of Samuel, Jason Driesbach offers a thorough analysis of secondary readings in 4QSamuelᵃ (4Q51) along with those in other major witnesses to Samuel (MT, Gᴮ, Gᴸ), leading to a nuanced characterization of the scribal features and textual affiliation of 4QSamuelᵃ, with implications for understanding its place in text-critical studies and literary analyses of the books of Samuel. 4QSamuelᵃ has been regarded by some scholars as an untrustworthy witness to the text of Samuel and by other scholars as a crucial witness, sometimes containing lost readings. Further, some regard this scroll as a non-biblical work based on Samuel. Driesbach's analysis offers an evaluation of these views based on a sound and thorough consideration of the scroll.

The Proclamation of Jesus seeks to place Jesus in the context of first-century Palestinian Judaism. The authors hope to discern the essence of his preaching, his concept of the kingdom of God, and the place of purity in his teaching and activities. Better methods for assessing not simply the authenticity of reported sayings and deeds, but for tracing the development of tradition are considered. The authors are convinced that most of the Synoptic tradition is authentic, but that much of it has been reinterpreted and recontextualized. Herein lies the real challenge for those investigating the historical Jesus. The Proclamation of Jesus opens up new avenues of study and makes new proposals for understanding Jesus in the context of his place and time.

Recent scholarship on Śaivism has significantly expanded our knowledge of the religious dimensions of Medieval Śaiva movements. However, the philosophical aspects displayed by some of the texts produced in these milieux remain largely unrecognized. The present study helps fill this lacuna by exploring the sophisticated and original philosophical system elaborated by the Kashmiri Śaiva nondualists Utpaladeva (fl. c. 925-975) and Abhinavagupta (fl. c. 975-1025). The book shows that this system cannot be reduced to a mere scriptural exegesis and examines the genesis of the main concepts found in the Pratyabhijñā ("Recognition") philosophy while taking into account the complexity of the philosophical field (already occupied by various currents, Buddhist as well as Brahmanical) in which Utpaladeva's thought was developed. Si les récents travaux de recherche consacrés au śivaïsme ont permis de mieux comprendre les dimensions religieuses des mouvements śivaïtes médiévaux, les aspects proprements philosophiques de certains des textes produits dans ces milieux demeurent largement méconnus. La présenté étude se propose de contribuer à combler cette lacune en explorant le système philosophique complexe et original élaboré par les śivaïtes non dualistes cachemiriens Utpaladeva (925-975) et Abhinavagupta (975-1025). Montrant que ce système ne se réduit pas à une exégèse scripturaire, l'ouvrage examine la genèse des concepts de la philosophie de la Pratyabhijñā ou "Reconnaissance" en prenant en compte la complexité du champ philosophique (déjà investi par divers courants aussi bien bouddhiques que brahmaniques) dans lequel la pensée d'Utpaladeva s'est développée.
