The Gospel of John : more light from Philo, Paul and archaeology : the Scriptures, Tradition, Exposition, Settings, Meaning /

: To Paul the traditions from and about Jesus had authority similar to that of the Scriptures: a logion or story served as text for paraphrastic expositions. Such expositions are also seen in John's Gospel. - It is insufficient to discuss 'John and the Synoptics'. A better scope is 'John within early gospel traditions'.- Paul and Philo maintain a cosmic understanding of Jesus and the Jewish people, respectively. Correspondingly, Jesus is seen in cosmological perspective in John's Prologue. Philo illuminates the role of God's logos relative to creation and revelation. - Archaeology testifies to the reliability of John's topographical references. Both John and Philo can combine theological and ideological elaborations with specific geographical references, historical events and religious feasts. The study has brought in material and perspectives which strengthen the view that the Gospel of John was independent of the other three written gospels.

The Gospel of John as literature : an anthology of twentieth-century perspectives /

: This volume contains thirteen essays written between 1900 and today. Each of them takes as its starting point the Gospel of John as a literary unity. The volume as a whole traces literary studies of John back to the early 1900's and charts their development from then. Some of these essays are little known even to Johannine scholars. Others are recognized as classics in the field. Two of them are translations. This book is therefore a timely and indispensable resource for those interested in the history of the fourth gospel interpretation, and in examples of literary methods applied to John.

Psalms and prayers : papers read at the Joint Meeting of the Society of Old Testament Study and Het Oudtestamentische Werkgezelschap in Nederland en België, Apeldoorn August 2006...

: The essays in this volume focus on the interpretation of the Book of Psalms and comparable texts in the Hebrew Bible. A variety of methods is applied to the ancient texts. Some essays concentrate on composition and structure, others on redaction and context. It is of great interest to see that each approach has its strength and its limits: stressing the importance to read the Psalms with a multi-dimensional matrix of methods. By viewing the Psalms as prayers, and thus as expressions of both faith and despair, a perspective on the contents of the ancient hymns and their functions in daily life has been opened. This volume contains various incentives for future research.
: "The papers collected in this volume were all read at the Joint Meeting of The Society for Old Testament Study (SOTS) and the Oudtestamentisch Werkgezelschap in Nederland en Belgie (OTW), in Apeldoorn, 21-24 August 2006. The Dutch and British Old Testament Societies foster a long tradition of Joint Meetings, of which this was the 13th since the start in 1970, now hosted by the Theological University of Apeldoorn." Writing and reading the scroll of Isaiah : studies of an interpretive tradition /

: This first part of a 2-volume work, this study combines recent approaches that treat the formation and early interpretation of the final form of the book of Isaiah with the more conventional historical-critical methods that treat the use of traditions by Isaiah's authors and editors. Studies investigate Isaiah's use of early sacred tradition, the editing and contextualization of oracles within the Isaianic tradition itself, and the interpretation of the book of Isaiah in later traditions (as seen in the various versions of the text and various communities). Contributors of this volume include virtually all of the major scholars of Isaiah and the leading scholars of biblical interpretation in the intertestamental, New Testament, and early Jewish periods.

Sing and Rejoice, O daughter of Zion (Zechariah 2:14) : Studies in Pesiqta Rabbati /

: Pesiqta Rabbati is a midrashic collection of homilies derived from the Hebrew bible related to Jewish observance of festivals, fast days, and special Sabbaths. The book underscores the importance and purpose of Pesiqta Rabbati: to explain the centrality of midrash in the life, culture, and ethnicity of Jewish belief and practice, as well as the importance of practice sustaining the continuity of Jews and their identity. Textual details are drawn from contemporary events (5th- 11th century) and Jewish ethics. Topics include apocalyptic thought, the suffering Messiah ben Ephraim, the Jerusalem Temple, and reactions to Christianity and Islam. Methods applied are text linguistics, borderland theories, halachic discourse analysis, semiotics, and literary criticism.

Covid-19 : A View from the Margins /

: The cataclysmic impact of COVID-19 exposed cracks in India's health and social systems on a scale never seen before. While the pandemic left no one untouched, it disproportionately affected people at the margins and put to test our centuries-old administrative, health, judicial, and social structures. This work is the first attempt to dissect the impact of the pandemic across various axes of marginalization - geography, financial, caste, gender, and religion, to name a few. At its core, this book is the culmination of the stories, experiences, and reflections on inequity as seen and interpreted by 37 sets of authors who responded to the pandemic in their roles as scientists, doctors, administrators, economists, legal advisors, journalists, public health practitioners, and health activists. These stories are the people's history of COVID-19 in India, an archive of memories and lessons crucial to building more resilient, equitable, and just systems in the post-COVID era.

Shakespeare and religio mentis: A Study of Christian Hermetism in Four Plays /

: Have you ever wondered why Cordelia has to die? Or how Alonso talks and walks about the isle while his body lies 'full fathom five' on the sea floor? Ever wondered why the monument to Shakespeare in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Stratford-upon-Avon names three pagans: Nestor, Socrates, and Virgil - king, philosopher, and poet? Or why Shakespeare is on Olympus, home of the Greek gods? This interdisciplinary study, the first to interpret the plays of Shakespeare in the light of the esoteric religious doctrines of the Corpus Hermeticum, holds answers to these and other puzzling questions.
: This landmark interdisciplinary study shines the light of religious Hermetism on Love's Labour's Lost, King Lear, Othello and The Tempest and reveals the 'religion of the mind' found in the Corpus Hermeticum to be a source of Shakespeare's understanding of human psychology. : 1 online resource. : Includes bibliographical references and index. : 9789004520608
