Demotic Accounts: Some Notes on the Form and Content /

This essay aims at shedding some light on Demotic accounts as a vital administrative tool in the ancient Egyptian’s everyday life in the Late and Greco-Roman Periods as evidenced by the large number of published accounts. Account documents belong to Demotic documentary texts and they usually record lists of various amounts of specific items that have been paid or received by certain individuals in different transactions. Such documents began to be recorded in Demotic from the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty. Among the abundant vocabulary of accounts in Demotic, ip “account” and wn “list” seem to be the only two words which were used to refer to accounts as a type of text. A full-structured account, which is not the case in most of Demotic accounts, normally contains a maximum number of three elements, that is, the heading, the main body, and the closing formula.

Aggadat Bereshit is a homiletic Midrash on the Book of Genesis written in Hebrew, about the 10th century CE. It has a unique threefold structure, dividing the chapters or homilies according to the three parts of Tenakh : Torah (Genesis), Prophets and Writings. It contains interesting material, some unparalleled in rabbinic literature, such as an anti-Christian interpretation of Genesis 22. Besides being the first translation, this volume presents some variants from manuscripts unknown by its last editor (S. Buber, Krakow 1903). This English translation will be welcomed in the world of Jewish and Biblical Studies, academics as well as lay-persons with lesser knowledge of rabbinic Hebrew. The extensive introduction gives an up-to-date overview of the questions as to text, contents, structure, dating and provenance of this hitherto neglected Midrash.

From the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s onwards, the world's attention has been occupied with the events which eventually led to the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and to the creation of five independent and sovereign states. The book is an epilogue to the first, very successful, collection Yugoslavia through Documents: from its creation to its dissolution , published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers in 1994. However, because of the complexity of the issues in the political, military, humanitarian and legal fields, its structure is different. Ancient doxography, particularly as distilled in the work on problems of physics by Aëtius, is a vital source for our knowledge of early Greek philosophy up to the first century BCE. The present volume contains 19 essays written between 1989 and 2009 in which the authors grapple with various aspects of the doxographical tradition and its main representatives. South Africa's post-apartheid transition has proven disastrous. It is marked by the emergence of a black elite of enriched capitalists out of the globalisation, neoliberalisation and financialisation of the economy in general and of its Minerals-Energy and Financial Complex in particular. By contrast, inequalities, poverty and failing social provision have persisted. Recent attention has shifted to how this disastrous trajectory was initiated, some suggesting a lack of available alternative policy options at the time of transition. This is shown to be false with a full range of progressive alternatives being rejected with corresponding consequences, from "state capture" to electoral defeat.

This study deals with physiognomic and astrological texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls that represent one of the earliest examples of ancient Jewish science. For the first time the Hebrew physiognomic-astrological list 4Q186 (4QZodiacal Physiognomy) and the Aramaic physiognomic list 4Q561 (4QPhysiognomy ar) are comprehensively studied in relation to both physiognomic and astrological writings from Babylonian and Greco-Roman traditions. New reconstructions and interpretations of these learned lists are offered that result in a fresh view of their sense, function, and status within both the Qumran community and Second Temple Judaism at large, showing that Jewish culture in Palestine participated in the cultural exchange of learned knowledge between Babylonian and Greco-Roman cultures.
