This volume presents a detailed study of the growth of Beas branch of Radha Soami Satsang which started from a wild grass strewn area of a few square yards and which has now been converted into a well planned self governed township under the leadership of its five spiritual masters - Baba Jaimal Singh, Baba Sawan Singh, Baba Jagat Singh, Baba Charan Singh and the present Master Baba Gurinder Singh. It also takes into account through extensive fieldwork the historical background, philosophy, national and international growth, administrative structure, social welfare activities and literary works undertaken by the Beas branch. It adds new dimensions to one's understanding of how a religious philosophy propagated by its masters could attract millions of followers from all over the world. The work is largely based on the information collected through the author's personal visits to Dera Beas and its other satsang centres, interviews of some Dera devotees besides Dera Library Archival records, Dera magazines, Government records and secondary sources. This volume also contains detailed maps, appendices and a glossary which adds immensely to the scholarly nature of the work.

The Rāsa Māna ke Pada of Kevalarāma : A Medieval Hindi Text of the Eighth Gaddī of the Vallabha Sect /

This book of the well-known Braj specialist, Prof Dr A.W. Entwistle (University of Washington), focuses on the medieval tradition of the eighth branch of the Vallabha sect. The lengthy introduction deals with the sectarian background of the branch, including a survey of the relevant tradition and history of medieval Vaiṣṇava devotion as a whole and the Vallabha sect in particular. It discusses the structure of the Puṣṭimārga and its gaddīs, or branches, since Rāsa Māna ke Pada is part of the literary heritage of the sect's Eighth Gaddī which, until partition in 1947, was based at Dera Ghazi Khan (now in Pakistan). It gives a , survey of the life and works of the founders of this gaddī, ŚrI Lālajī, and of his grandson Kevalarāma. Due attention is also paid to the language of the text and in an appendix a comparative etymological glossary is given that cites examples from other Braj Bhāṣā authors in order to support interpretations of the more obscure words and idioms. The main part of the book consists of a critical edition of the Rāsa Māna ke Pada , a collection of poems attributed to Kevalarāma, and an annotated translation into English.

: "Tell el-Dab'a XXII is the comprehensive final publication of the results of an excavation by the Cairo branch of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in the area of Ezbet Rushdi, northeast of Tell el-Dab'a (Area R/I). A first excavation at that site in the 1950's by the Egyptian Antiquities Organisation had revealed the existence of a large mud brick temple plus surrounding settlement structures of the 12th dynasty date. The Austrian archaeological work in 1996 under the directorship of Manfred Bietak has the initial scope to re-examine the previous results and to clarify some details. However, it developed into a more substantial excavation held in two campaigns, which yielded many new results and finds. The temple building was re-studied; it could be established that it was founded not earlier than the middle-12th dynasty (probably in the fifth year of Sesostris III). Women have been structurally part of the masonic enterprise from at least the middle of the 18th century. Yet, little is known about the ways in which they themselves obtained and exercised power to influence the systems they were involved in, in order to adapt them to be more appropriate to their needs. This volume intends to concentrate on two aspects: Women's agency (i.e. the power women gained and exercised in this context) and rituals (i.e. the role of men and women in changing and shaping the rituals women work with). These two aspects are closely related, since it requires some agency to realise changes in existing rituals.
