When the tenth-century Kāmil as-sinā'a (or al-Kitāb al-malakī ) of 'Alī ibn al-'Abbās al-Mağūsī was adapted for a Latin-reading audience by Constantine the African in the late eleventh century, the medieval West had, for the first time, the opportunity to use a text which covered the whole of medicine. But the 100-odd extant manuscripts suggest that Contantine's Pantegni was put together over a considerable period of time, and chapters from other Latin and newly-translated Arabic medical works were added to or substituted those of the Kāmil . This book is the first to be devoted to Constantine the African: it sheds light on the School of Salerno and the formation of a medical corpus in the High Middle Ages.

In the first place, it is shown how signs were ritually constructed within instituted practice of divination ; second, how, although some spontaneous natural phenomena appeared out of any instituted context, may nevertheless constitute omens or monition ; third, how the gods' intervention may reveal a sort of intention in the course of national history or individual life ; finally, the essays study the epistemology of signs at work in some philosophical or theological elaborations, which may enlighten the tension between oracular evidence and ritual control of signs, and between revealed facts and reasoning arguments intending to neutralize the injunctions of the divine.

The Kingdom aspires to be recognized as an emerging African power both in its identity and in its space of projection. The codex Parisino-petropolitanus is one of the earliest witnesses of the handwritten transmission of the Qurʾanic text which has survived to this day. The various fragments which were part of the original manuscript are scattered among various collections; once put together, they provide a unique picture of the state of the text during the 7th century (orthography and textual peculiarities) and of the circumstances in which the canonical version as we know it today took shape physically. The present study, first of its kind, paves the way for a more accurate understanding of the beginning of Islam, based on a significant document, and of the evolution of the Qurʾan during that period. Le codex Parisino-petropolitanus est l'un des plus anciens témoins de la transmission manuscrite du texte du Coran qui aient été conservés. Ses différents fragments sont dispersés entre plusieurs collections; une fois mis ensemble, ils donnent un aperçu unique sur l'état du texte au 7e siècle (orthographe et particularités textuelles) et sur les conditions dans lesquelles s'est organisée matériellement la constitution de la version canonique telle que nous la connaissons. L'aventure extraordinaire d'Alexandre a fait de lui un héros hors du commun dont les échos ont rencontré des interprétations bienveillantes et enthousiastes aussi bien que des commentaires franchement négatifs. Pour les uns Alexandre était le roi modèle que les princes de ce monde feraient bien d'imiter: tout succès serait alors garanti. Pour les autres le comportement du jeune roi constituait un anti-exemple: son arrogance, son hybris étaient inacceptables, voire pernicieux. Chaque société réceptrice a ainsi récrit l'aventure dans la perspective qu'elle a jugée fonctionnelle. Le travail que voici présente pour la première fois l'évolution des réécritures consacrées à Alexandre le Grand dans la littérature française du 12e siècle depuis le texte d'Albéric (début du siècle) jusqu'au Vengement Alixandre de Gui de Cambrai (vers 1191). Entre ces deux textes-là on trouve l' Alexandre décasyllabique , le Fuerre de Gadres mis sur le compte d'un certain Eustache, l' Alexandre en Orient de Lambert le Tort, la Mort Alixandre , les versions conservées par les manuscrits Arsenal et Venise, le Roman de toute Chevalerie attribué à Thomas de Kent, la Venjance Alixandre de Jehan le Nevelon ainsi que le grand Roman d'Alexandre , terminé vers 1184/5, par Alexandre de Bernai dit de Paris, où Alexandre est vraiment le roi modèle. Ce dernier texte se distingue d'ailleurs non seulement des autres réécritures en territoire français de par sa solide charpente organisatrice (son compilateur l'a voulu example fonctionnel), mais aussi de par le fait qu'il est le seul à avoir occasionné de nombreuses suites et interpolations,- parmi lesquelles, entre autres, les fameux Vœux du Paon de Jacques de Longuy-on (1313/4). La compilation d'Alexandre de Bernai dit de Paris est devenue, et ce à juste titre, la vulgate de la tradition française. A travers les analyses des différentes réécritures françaises de la vie du grand Macédonien que nous a léguées le 12e siècle se profile le statut unique du grand roman antique qu'est le Roman d'Alexandre . Le quartier des prêtres est un quartier résidentiel situé dans le sanctuaire d'Amon à Karnak, à l'est du lac Sacré. Au cours du premier millénaire avant notre ère, il a été presque continuellement occupé par des prêtres le temps de leur service cultuel. Un programme de recherche lancé en 2001 par le Centre franco-égyptien d'étude des temples de Karnak (Cfeetk) complète et révise les résultats de fouilles de sauvetage menées dans ce secteur dans les années 1970, jusqu'alors partiellement publiés. L'histoire et l'évolution de ce quartier, ainsi que l'identité, la culture matérielle, la vie quotidienne et le régime alimentaire de ses habitants, ont été établis au moyen d'une collaboration pluridisciplinaire pendant de nouvelles fouilles et des missions d'études du matériel. Cette recherche explore la manière dont cet habitat s'intègre dans le contexte plus large du temple, en particulier son environnement religieux et architectural direct sur la rive sud du lac Sacré qui jadis abritait de grands secteurs économiques et peut-être artisanaux. L'étude de ces annexes offre un témoignage unique et éloquent des activités quotidiennes au sein du temple d'Amon à Karnak et de la vie des serviteurs des dieux égyptiens.

The Bábí and Baháʾí Faiths represent two of the most important religious movements of modern times. This book relates the story of the evolution of the Bábí-Baháʾí community, beginning with the birth of its founder, Siyyid ʾAlí-Muhammad, known as the Báb, in 1819 and then traced over the next century and a half in the city of his birth, Shíráz. Its author, Mírzá Habíbuʾlláh Afnán, was himself born in the house of the Báb, reared by the widow of the Báb, who shared with him many stories of the Báb's life, then spent nearly a year with Baháʾuʾlláh in the ʾAkka-Haifa area, and some ten years in close proximity to Baháʾuʾlláh's son ʾAbduʾl-Bahá. He served for the next half century as the hereditary custodian of the house of the Báb, and as such was uniquely qualified to tell the story of the Bábí-Baháʾí Faiths in the city of Shíráz in remarkable and moving detail.
