: The Hexaemeron of Anastasius of Sinai (late 7th-early 8th c.) expounds the creation account and the Adam and Eve story as foreshadowing the mystery of Christ and the Church, an idea that goes back to Origen and beyond. The commentary remained unpublished in Greek until 2007, received only scattered attention, and has been often considered as apocryphal. In this book, the first of its kind in any language, Dimitrios Zaganas firmly establishes its authenticity, investigates its genesis and date, offers detailed analysis of its numerous sources, and studies its distinctly allegorical approach to Genesis 1-3. Several emendations of the Greek text are suggested in the appendix.

Sleep in Renaissance Poland : Bartolomeo Berrecci's Tomb Sculpture and Its Legacy in East Central Europe /

: Focusing on the Italian architect and sculptor Bartolomeo Berrecci, this monograph examines an important subset of his sepulchral works-recumbent statuary-and offers insights into their patronage, reception, and interpretation. Berrecci's exploration of this sculptural type predates its eventual spread beyond Italy, Spain, and Poland. Indeed, he proved so successful that well over 200 statues can still be found in present-day Poland and Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine and Sweden. Although he mainly produced them for Catholic clients, examples of such monuments also exist in Lutheran, Calvinist and Orthodox settings. The volume draws on a vast array of primary sources, visual, textual, and archival, and compares Berrecci's workshop to the Tuscan Quattrocento workshops of Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello, Perugino et al. The volume draws on a vast array of primary sources, including artworks and documents. Comparisons are made with similar compositions emanating from Tuscan Quattrocento workshops, including Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello and Perugino.

In Rendre la justice à Amid , Yavuz Aykan analyses the legal life of the city of Amid, the capital of Ottoman Diyarbekir province in the 18th century. Making use of court records from the cities of Amid, Harput and Mardin, he explores the centrality of the qadi, the provincial governor, and the provincial mufti to law enforcement. By tracing the genealogies of legal texts used by the mufti for fatwa production, Aykan maps out the broader transformations of various judicial interpretations in their journey from Greater Syria to Transoxiana and the Golden Horde, and finally into Ottoman legal praxis. As such, this book offers a far more historicized approach to the multiple actors and hierarchies of juridical systems operating in this provincial setting.

: A new interpretation of Molière's work, drawn from contemporary archival sources, showing for the first time how he shaped an independent career between the opposing pressures of aristocratic patrons and mercantile publishers. Exploiting the alternate roles of actor and courtier, he progressed from social success to artistic achievement but, to the dissatisfaction of his royal patrons, Molière put the priorities of his own authorial status before the notion of service at Court; important new bibliographical material illustrates his long war in defence of his authorial rights against a cartel of unscrupulous publishers. The six chapters of this absorbing study challenge the current orthodoxy of a programmatic ideology in Molière's work. Raising basic questions about the writer's perception of her/himself, and about the French cult of classicism, this work will interest all specialists of seventeenth-century French theatre and social history.
