Lines on Stone and the accompanying CD-Rom of the dayman Archive offer an encyclopaedic view of the pre- and protohistoric Rock Art of India. The 3,000 or so illustrations give a sweeping view of the aesthetic as well as thematic vastness of the earliest Indian art. We see people in their daily chores, women nursing babies, carrying baskets, catching rats, working grinders, emptying baskets, while men with their microlith tipped spears hunt animals, climb trees, shoot their arrows at birds or fish. But we also see many enigmatic sceneries, which we can not 'read' any more, but then we know that the people of long past must have had their own mythologies which we might not be able to disentangle any more. These rock pictures therefore are a treasure which has to be cherished and protected like the proverbial apple of the eye: it is our only possibility to look into our own past, a past of which we have little otherwise. Although rock pictures were noticed by antiquarians in the nineteenth century, the systematic study of these pictures started only after the discovery of Bhimbetka and the excavations which followed during the 1970s. Bhimbetka is by now a well known rock art site, a tourist site of the first order in Central India on which the prestigious UN world heritage status of cultural property of mankind was conferred. But it also should be remembered that many more such sites are threatened by the economic transformation of India.

As continuation of the two preceding volumes of 'Short Texts' with demotic votive inscriptions (volume I) and mummy labels (volume II), this volume brings together all but 800 demotic and Greek-demotic graffiti. These are in principle all the graffiti published in periodicals, congress proceedings and colloquia and 'Festschrifts', as well as in monographs that are not exclusively concerned with demotic graffiti (chiefly excavations reports). The texts are presented in topographical order from South to North, with those from a single monument kept together. The texts show the full gamut of themes encountered in demotic graffiti, which are more varied than their reputation would suggest: the commemorative inscriptions often have more to offer than just names and provide information about the careers of the inscribers, occasionally even touching on historical events of a larger scale. Specifically the numerous and variegated graffiti from the stone quarries in Middle Egypt and at Tura and Masara opposite ancient Memphis deserve to be mentioned because many of these texts are published here for the first time. Several clusters of these quarry graffiti belong to the first demotic texts that were recorded in the nineteenth century, and they constitute the only extant copies for many texts that have now been destroyed. In addition, there are some three hundred brief inscriptions on various objects such as coins, hieratic papyri and mummy linen, stelae, sculptors' models and plaques, various vases and amphoras, containers for embalming materials, dishes for the preparation of kyphi, and various other objects.

The second part of the volume assembles essays on the Apostolic Fathers. This volume explores the literary representation of male sexual dysfunction and discusses the natural and supernatural elements of an ancient folk medical system based on conceptual associations between male sexuality and specific plants, animals and minerals. The work incorporates material from both literary and scientific sources to draw parallels between ancient and modern paradigms of healing. The literary depiction of attempts to remedy impotence demonstrates how an accessibility to cures contributes to the sexual and social reintegration of the sufferer. The Satyrica of Petronius echoes this process by means of the text itself and so effects similar ends. The book provides new insights into literature and the ancient belief systems underlying it with its original and integrative approach to disciplines such as philology, botany, mineralogy, zoology and medicine.

Helen Jacobus has won the Sean Dever Memorial Prize with her contribution to this volume.
