Purity is a cultural construct that had a central role in the forming and the development of religious traditions in the ancient Mediterranean. This volume analyzes concepts, practices and images associated with purity in the main cultures of Antiquity, and discusses from a comparative perspective their parallel developments and transformations. The perspective adopted is both synchronic and diachronic; the comparative approach takes into account points of contact and mutual influences, but also includes major transcultural trends. A number of renowned specialists contribute a large variety of perspectives and approaches, combining archaeology, epigraphy and social history; in addition, particular attention is given to concepts of purity in ancient Israel and early Judaism as a 'test-case' of sorts. Through its extensive coverage, the volume contributes decisively to the present discussion about the forming of religious traditions in the ancient Mediterranean world.

Using the Braudelian concept of the Mediterranean this volume focuses on the condition of "coastal exchanges" involving the Dalmatian littoral and its Adriatic and more distant maritime network. Spalato and Ragusa intersect with Constantinople, Cairo and Spanish Naples just as Sinan, Palladio and Robert Adam cross paths in this liquid expanse. Concentrating on materiality and on the arts, architecture in particular, the authors identify portability and hybridity as characteristic of these exchanges, and tease out expected and unexpected serendipitous moments when they occurred. Focusing on translation and its instruments these essays expand the traditional concept of influence by thrusting mobility and the \'hardware\' of cultural transmission, its mechanisms, rather than its effects, into the foreground. Wadi Khashab : unearthing late prehistory in the Eastern Desert of Egypt /

The 5th millennium BC megalithic ceremonial complex at Wadi Khashab in the Eastern Desert of Egypt is located almost directly in the middle of the Eastern Desert, on a wadi trail connecting the Valley of the Nile with the Red Sea. The volume presents the results of three seasons of excavation of this site, which featured a human burial in the center of several burials of cattle and sheep, within an enclosure of upright stone slabs that must have formed an eye-catching landmark for many miles up and down the wadi, also for the pastoral communities traversing the mountains in later times. The study of the animal remains from this remote site in the poorly known Eastern Desert has provided a very well documented series of osteological, osteometric and archaeozoological data on early cattle and sheep. It adds to the current knowledge of cattle domestication in the Neolithic and early cattle mobility in northeastern Africa, offering unique information on the uses of domestic livestock not only in the funerary traditions, but also in mobility systems. It also contributes to the discussion on the origins and domestication of the auroch in Africa, pointing to a local African origin for the cattle.

Būluṣ ibn Rajāʾ (ca. 955-ca. 1020) was a celebrated writer of Coptic Christianity from Fatimid Egypt. Born to an influential Muslim family in Cairo, Ibn Rajāʾ later converted to Christianity and composed The Truthful Exposer ( Kitāb al-Wāḍiḥ bi-l-Ḥaqq ) outlining his skepticism regarding Islam. His ideas circulated across the Middle East and the Mediterranean in the medieval period, shaping the Christian understanding of the Qurʾan's origins, Muḥammad's life, the practice of Islamic law, and Muslim political history.
