The subjects range from Islamic philosophy and theology, over the history of science, the transmission into other medieval cultures to language and literature. Il en renouvelle l'approche en faisant appel à des sources ottomanes, arabes et occidentales très variées. Les contributions réunies par Benjamin Lellouch et Nicolas Michel s'attachent à mesurer les transformations structurelles qu'a induites l'événement dans la société, les pouvoirs, la culture littéraire, artistique et matérielle en Égypte. Conquête ottomane de l'Égypte (1517) is the first collective work that deals with Selīm Ist's crushing victory over the Mamluks, which made the Ottoman sultanate into the sole remaining Muslim power in the eastern Mediterranean, and reduced Egypt to the rank of a province. The book offers new insights into this major event by using a wide range of Ottoman and Arabic as well as Western sources. These essays in French and English collected by Benjamin Lellouch and Nicolas Michel examine to what extent the Ottoman conquest altered the structures of Egyptian society, power relations, literature, arts and material culture. They explore both its backgrounds and geopolitical aftermath, and reconstruct its echoes - loud at first, then gradually fading out - in the Middle East, Italy, and the Mediterranean.

The notion of adab is at the heart of Arab-Islamic culture. Born in the crucible of the Arabic and Persian civilization, nourished by Greek and Indian influences, this polysemic notion could cover a variegated range of meanings: good behavior, knowledge of manners, etiquette, rules and belles-lettres and finally, literature. Voici pour la première fois une étude détaillée du phénomène de la Décadence littéraire qui met en exergue l'influence centrale de l'homosexualité masculine dans le développement de ce mouvement artistique qui vit le jour à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle. Divisée en deux parties intimement liées, cette étude consiste d'abord en un retour aux sources littéraires et, ensuite, en une analyse spécifique de la pratique du genre sous l'optique originale des sexualités décadentes. La vie et l'œuvre de Jean Lorrain [1855-1906], écrivain normand, fournissent la matière à un examen innovateur de cette Décadence toujours mal définie. L'originalité de l'apport de cette œuvre réside surtout dans le choix des textes de Lorrain et l'approche critique 'gaie et lesbienne' que l'on adopte pour déconstruire astucieusement ses romans masculins - à savoir, Monsieur de Bougrelon [1897], Monsieur de Phocas [1901], et Le Vice errant [1902]. Les trois personnages principaux forment une sorte de triptyque littéraire de la Décadence physique, morale et sociale de l'époque. D'une façon convaincante Winn arrive à dépeindre le portrait d'un Lorrain héraut de la littérature gaie contemporaine. Destinée aux théoriciens de la Décadence et aux amateurs de l'œuvre de Lorrain, cette étude constitue aussi une démarche innovatrice dans le domaine de l'histoire de la sexualité.
