Frater Petrus Collationes de tempore (Fourteenth Century) : Volume 2: Collations 64-150, First Sunday after Easter through Ordinary Time /
:
The Latin sermons published for the first time are attributed to an otherwise unknown Franciscan friar referred to as Frater Petrus. This second volume of his Collationes de tempore, covering the First Sunday after Easter through Ordinary Time, comprises all the remaining entries for Sundays and major feasts in a full year's cycle. The sermons in volume two are preserved in a single fourteenth-century manuscript from Germany. Theologically competent and gracefully presented in the conventional sermon style of the period, the collection served religious communities and provided material for preaching in the vernacular for the general public. The themes as developed offer evidence of actual preaching in a typical setting from the period between the founding of the Franciscan order and the Observant reform movement. These sermons were not composed by a major light of the order, but by a rank-and-file friar who may have held the status of an intermediate-level teacher, judging by the care with which the collection was copied and indexed. Edited and translated by Daniel Nodes, the Collationes de tempore of Frater Petrus offers scholars and students a reliable new resource in an area of sermon studies still in short supply.

The Visionary Preaching of Juana de la Cruz (1481-1534) : Ritual, Revelation, and Collective Writing /
:
Step into the world of 16th-century Castile, where a devout community of Franciscan women preserved the public preaching of their visionary abbess, Juana de la Cruz (1481-1534), through writing. This groundbreaking book uncovers how her sermons were recorded, explores the materiality of the surviving codices, and reveals their role in the controversial censorship and blocking of Juana's canonization. Tracing the rich tradition of the liturgical vision (12th-16th centuries), it delves into female literacy and the creation of collective knowledge in female religious houses around Europe. Featuring rare insights and fresh evaluations of historical texts, this volume illuminates the intersection of female prophetic preaching, community, and the written word at the end of the Middle Ages.

Codex Sinaiticus Arabicus and Its Family : A Bayesian Approach /
:
Arabic versions of the New Testament have been overlooked for too long. The Sinai New Finds of 1975 unearthed Codex Sinaiticus Arabicus which preserves an Arabic translation of the Gospels differing markedly from the Majority Text. Here Robert Turnbull undertakes a wide-ranging study of this version, discovering many lectionary manuscripts with the same text. Several open-access datasets are made available. Bayesian phylogenetics and other computational techniques are used to draw insights into the transmission history of this version and its place in the wider New Testament textual tradition. This Arabic version will be indispensable in future textual scholarship on the Gospels. See Less

The Winter Missal of Arnold of Rummen : Huis van het boek, Ms. 10 A 14 /
:
The Hundred Years' War, the Plague, the van Artevelde uprising, conflict between a count and an aspiring count, Corpus Christi and the Eucharist--these are the context for the enigmatic manuscript studied in this book. Above all, this missal from Ghent is outstanding for its rich and inventive penwork flourishing, given life by the prayer-pulses of the text and enriched by cycles of development. The lowly two-line initial emerges as the primary locus of creative interaction between painting and flourishing. Illumination, produced by a priest and a layman, is notable for its theological richness and is enlivened by distinctive gorgons.

The Canadian Pentecostal Experience /
:
The Canadian Pentecostal Experience includes eighteen essays organized into three themes: 1) Historiography and Early Canadian Pentecostalism; 2) Theological Practices and Processes; and 3) Social and Cultural Change. This collection makes a significant contribution to the growing literature of global Pentecostal scholarship. The works are important for the Canadian context but as the editors argue in the Introduction, Canadian Pentecostalism is "glocal" (shaped by both local and global realities). This collection will interest readers drawn from the wider field of religious studies and global Pentecostalism to initiate conversations about how Pentecostalism evolves in both its local and global expressions.

The Laboratory of the Revolution : Tabasco under Tomás Garrido Canabál, 1922-1935 /
:
Laboratory of the Revolution is the first-ever professional study of Tomás Garrido Canabal, revolutionary strongman of Tabasco state between 1922 and 1935. He dreamed of turning Tabasco-an isolated backwater and the quintessential "banana republic"-into a beacon of progress. Garrido's recipe for that progress consisted of ridding the state of religion, prohibiting alcohol and other vices, championing science, and boosting agriculture and ranching. He only fell from power when a shoot-out in Tabasco furnished the pretext for subordinating the state to President Lázaro Cárdenas's centrally governed political machine, the forerunner of Mexico's long-lived one-party system.

Selected writings on ethics and politics /
:
Celebrated today for his groundbreaking work in logic and the foundations of mathematics, Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848) was best known in his own time as a leader of the reform movement in his homeland (Bohemia, then part of the Austrian Empire). As professor of religious science at the Charles University in Prague from 1805 to 1819, Bolzano was a highly visible public intellectual, a courageous and determined critic of abuses in Church and State. Based in large part on a carefully argued utilitarian practical philosophy, he developed a non-violent program for the reform of the authoritarian institutions of the Empire, which he himself set in motion through his teaching and other activities. Rarely has a philosopher had such a great impact on the political culture of his homeland. This volume contains a substantial collection of Bolzano's writings on ethics and politics, translated into English for the first time. It includes a complete translation of the treatise On the Best State , his principal writings on ethics, an essay on the contemporary situation in Ireland, and a selection of his Exhortations, dealing with such topics as enlightenment, civil disobedience, the status of women, anti-Semitism and Czech-German relations in Bohemia. It will be of particular interest to students of central European philosophy and history, and more generally to philosophers and historians of ideas.

Community building in the Shepherd of Hermas : a critical study of some key aspects /
:
In Community Building in the Shepherd of Hermas , Mark Grundeken investigates key aspects of Christian community life as reflected upon in the early Christian writing the Shepherd of Hermas (2nd century C.E.). Grundeken's thematic study deals with various topics: the community's identity, including its (alleged) 'Jewish Christianness', (lack of) resurrection belief, sectarian tendencies and its relation to the authorities and to the emperor cult; social features, encompassing gender roles and charity; and rituals such as baptism, metanoia , Eucharistic meals, the Sunday collection, dancing (and singing), the 'holy kiss' and reading of Scripture. The many fruitful entries prove Hermas to be one of the main texts for studying the development of community building in the early church.

It has been proved that theological essays written in the time of the creation of those images influenced the iconography. The same influence has been traced in historic events of the relevant time. The Christian/Jewish disputations, the persecution of the Talmud, the Puritanism, the Tridentinum, the reflection on the relationship between Jesus and his church, the increasing importance of the attendance of the Sunday mass and many other historical and spiritual sources have been shown as relevant for the concepts of these works of art. Even for small details, as for instance the leaning Jesus at a column, a historic-theological source could be detected.
