This is the first collection of studies entirely devoted to the terminological pair dār al-islām / dar al-ḥarb , "the abode of Islam" and "the abode of war", apparently widely known as representative of "the Islamic vision" of the world, but in fact almost unexplored. A team of specialists in different fields of Islamic studies investigates the issue in its historical and conceptual origins as well as in its reception within the different genres of Muslim written production. In contrast to the fixed and permanent categories they are currently identified with, the multifaceted character of these two notions and their shifting meanings is set out through the analysis of a wide range of contexts and sources, from the middle ages up to modern times. Geller is a thematically focused collection of 34 brand-new essays bringing to light a representative selection of the rich and varied scientific and technical knowledge produced chiefly by the cuneiform cultures. The contributions concentrate mainly on Mesopotamian scholarly descriptions and practices of diagnosing and healing diverse physical ailments and mental distress. The festschrift contains both critical editions of new texts as well as analytical studies dealing with various issues of Mesopotamian medical and magical lore. Currently, this is the largest edited volume devoted to this topic, significantly contributing to the History of Ancient Sciences.

A Qurʾān Commentary by Ibn Barrajān of Seville (d. 536/1141) is a critical Arabic text edition of a medieval Muslim Qurʾān commentary entitled, Īḍāḥ al-ḥikma bi-aḥkām al-ʿibra ( Wisdom Deciphered, the Unseen Discovered ). The annotated Arabic text is accompanied by an analytical introduction and an extensive subject index. This Qurʾān commentary is Ibn Barrajān's last and most esoteric work, and as such offers the most explicit articulation of his mystical and philosophical doctrines. It synthesizes his teachings, drawn from a wide array of Islamic disciplines, and provides a link between early Sufism and Muslim mysticism in medieval Spain (Andalusia). The Īḍāḥ moreover is the earliest known work of its kind to make extensive use of Arabic Biblical material as proof texts for Qurʾānic doctrines.

In Medicine in Ancient Assur Troels Pank Arbøll offers a microhistorical study of a single exorcist named Kiṣir-Aššur who practiced medical and magical healing in the ancient city of Assur (modern northern Iraq) in the 7th century BCE. The book provides the first detailed analysis of a healer's education and practice in ancient Mesopotamia based on at least 73 texts assigned to specific stages of his career. By drawing on a microhistorical framework, the study aims at significantly improving our understanding of the functional aspects of texts in their specialist environment. Furthermore, the work situates Kiṣir-Aššur as one of the earliest healers in world history for whom we have such details pertaining to his career originating from his own time.

This volume is part of the collaborative project of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK) on documents pertaining to economic history and quality of life in Northern India in the late nineteenth century. The present volume (divided into three parts, A, B, and C) roughly covers the broad period of the 1880s and 1890s. Northern India here means what was generally known as the North-Western Provinces (NWP), and the province of Oudh (till 1877, after which it was merged with the NWP) in the late nineteenth century, excluding the Punjab province. Documents included in this volume focus on a wide spectrum of human activities in northern India. They are materials from diverse fields, such as agriculture, forestry, population, public health, jails, education and sanitation, in each of which the British Raj was involved in collecting information and directing the courses of development in more than one sense. These documents touch on various kinds of agricultural knowledge such as agricultural operations, agricultural technologies, manure, and material conditions of agricultural classes, population change, health and mortality, literacy and primary education, values of livestock and cattle diseases, production and export of cash crops, production and supply of food grains, distribution of waste lands, forests and reclamation of jungle lands, operation of income tax, human disease and mortality, and scarcity and famines. A section on the report of native newspapers has been added to evaluate the responses of educated Indians on some of these developments. Other reports include ones on agricultural improvements, public works and veterinary developments. Touching on a number of crucial aspects of material conditions and quality of life of people in Northern India in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the volume stands as a valuable source book for the students of both economic and social history, and of human development in India as well.
