Painting Amara West : the technology and experience of colour in New Kingdom Nubia /

The first in a series of volumes generated by the British Museum's Amara West Research Project, this explores the use of pigments and the experience of colour in the town founded around 1300BC as a centre of the pharaonic administration of Upper Nubia (Kush). Combining scientific analyses, archaeological fieldwork, and modern ethnographic perspectives, the research provides nuanced perspectives on lived experience at Amara West. This study outlines the evidence for paint products at the site from pigments, palettes, grindstones, painted walls, and coffin fragments, and uses several scientific techniques to identify the materials used. The evidence is used alongside interviews with current residents of the area around Amara West, and experiments with grinding and painting, to discuss the importance of the process of collecting and preparing the paint in ancient times, and its place in the interconnected taskspaces in the ancient town.

The mission of development : religion and techno-politics in Asia /

The Mission of Development interrogates the complex relationships between Christian mission and international development in Asia from the 19th century to the new millennium. Through historically and ethnographically grounded case studies, contributors examine how missionaries have adapted to and shaped the age of development and processes of 'technocratisation', as well as how mission and development have sometimes come to be cast in opposition. The volume takes up an increasingly prominent strand in contemporary research that reverses the prior occlusion of the entanglements between religion and development. It breaks new ground through its analysis of the techno-politics of both development and mission, and by focusing on the importance of engagements and encounters in the field in Asia.

Religious diversity in Asia /

The religious landscape in Asia has long been diverse, with various forms of syncretic traditions and pragmatic practices continuously having been challenged by centrifugal forces of differentiation. This anthology explores representations and managements of religious diversity in Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and diaspora religions originating in these countries, seen through the lenses of history, identity, state, ritual and geography. In addition to presenting empirical cases, the chapters also address theoretical and methodological reflections using Asia as a laboratory for further comparative research of the relevance and use of 'religious diversity'. Religious Diversity in Asia was made possible by a framework grant from the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation allowing the grant holder (Jørn Borup) and two colleagues (Marianne Q. Fibiger and Lene Kühle) to host a workshop at Aarhus University and to co-arrange workshops in Delhi and Nagoya. We would like to thank professors Arshad Alam and Michiaki Okuyama for hosting these latter workshops at Jawaharlal Nehru University and Nanzan University, and we would like to thank Professor Chong-Suh Kim for the invitation for Jørn Borup to visit Seoul National University. However, almost nothing was known about its foundation & early developments. In 2006, the French Archaeological Mission in Central Oman began the exploration of the area. After 10 years of field research using innovative methods & technologies, much is revealed about the importance of Adam in the prehistory & early history of Oman. This is a monograph about the research carried out at Adam & it includes chapters written by specialists directly involved in the field activities. Each major period is described, including evidence of Palaeolithic occupation, Neolithic settlements, Early & Middle Bronze Age necropolises, Iron Age ritual sites & also an ethnographic study of the traditional water sharing within the oasis.
