Theophrastus of Eresus : sources for his life, writings, thought and influence. Commentary volume 4, Psychology (Texts 265-327) /

: This volume forms part of the large international Theophrastus project started by Brill in 1992 and edited by W.W. Fortenbaugh, R.W. Sharples and D. Gutas . Together with volumes comprising the texts and translations, the commentary volumes provide a new generation of classicists with an up-to-date collection of the fragments and testimonia relating to Theophrastus (c. 370-288/5 B.C), Aristotle's pupil and successor as head of the Lyceum. This will be the fourth volume of commentary on Theophrastus of Eresus. Sources for his Life, Writings, Thought and Influence , and is on the psychological and epistemological material. It includes contributions by Dimitri Gutas on the Arabic passages, and Pamela Huby has covered the rest, including close study of the quotations given by Priscian of Lydia and the extensive but little known medieval Latin passages. Different approaches to the use of medieval material as evidence for Theophrastus' thought are discussed in the Introduction.

Generative Grammar's Grave Foundational Errors /

: This work critically examines Noam Chomsky's widely accepted ontological assumptions-now referred to as "biolinguistics"-and demonstrates that they are internally inconsistent. Notably, Chomsky himself has, at least once, acknowledged this issue. Additionally, we challenge a fundamental claim from Chomsky's linguistic theories of the 1950s: that natural languages, particularly English, operate on constructive (proof-theoretic) grammars, also known as generative grammars. This assertion fails to account for numerous linguistic structures that fall outside its framework. Finally, we scrutinize Chomsky's frequent assertion that "there is essentially only one language on Earth," revealing it to be more rhetorical than substantive. By exposing these foundational flaws, this work calls for a reassessment of key aspects of Chomskyan linguistics.

Aesthetic value in classical antiquity /

: How do people respond to and evaluate their sensory experiences of the natural and man-made world? What does it mean to speak of the 'value' of aesthetic phenomena? And in evaluating human arts and artifacts, what are the criteria for success or failure? The sixth in a series exploring 'ancient values', this book investigates from a variety of perspectives aesthetic value in classical antiquity. The essays explore not only the evaluative concepts and terms applied to the arts, but also the social and cultural ideologies of aesthetic value itself. Seventeen chapters range from the 'life without the Muses' to 'the Sublime', and from philosophical views to middle-brow and popular aesthetics. Aesthetic value in classical antiquity should be of interest to classicists, cultural and art historians, and philosophers.

Ecological economics /

: A textbook about the nature of economics and the economics of nature Is economic growth the cause of or the solution for biodiversity loss? Why do we keep drilling for oil and gas when green energy sources are cheaper? And is it possible to protect nature without government intervention? The answer to these and other questions lies in economic knowledge. But in an age when the boundaries between nature and society are becoming increasingly vague, ecology and economics are still worlds apart. Not only should economists find out more about ecology, ecologists should acquire a better understanding of economic principles and concepts: from Adam Smith's invisible hand to the Gini coefficient and from diminishing marginal utility to the Hedonic Pricing method. The aim of this book is to provide students with knowledge and an understanding of economic science and to offer them a mindset for tackling the important ecological issues of our time. The book demonstrates that economic theories are sometimes part of an ecological problem but can also offer valuable insights in the search for a solution. The textbook is intended for use on ecology courses at institutes for professional education and on science courses. A strange combination at first glance but, having read this book, I am convinced of the inextricable link between ecology and economics. This book is an eye-opener not just for professional and science students but also for policymakers and land managers. My interest increased with every page and my knowledge about the interfaces and connections between two interesting disciplines grew considerably. Hans van Rooijen, Former director of Woodland and Nature Conservation course, Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein, the Netherlands 'Old-fashioned' administrators and economists have a tendency to regard economics and ecology as counter-forces. And many nature conservationists don't think that nature should be discussed in terms of (economic) utility. In all honesty, both visions are fairly blinkered. It goes without saying that nature has a value in itself, which is why Natuurmonumenten has worked in this area for more than 110 years. But nature also has economic significance - and needn't be an obstacle to economic development. It can even be an economic multiplier. The thinking around synergies between economics and ecology must be intensified, to make the world a better place. This book can only help! - Marc van den Tweel, Chief Executive Natuurmonumenten (Dutch conservation organisation), the Netherlands.

The Cratylus : Plato's critique of naming /

: The Cratylus has puzzled many readers with its lengthy discussion of the 'true meanings' of more than a hundred Greek names. This book aims to give a coherent interpretation of the whole dialogue, paying particular attention to these etymologies. The book discusses the rival theories of naming offered by Cratylus, Hermogenes, and Socrates, arguing that Socrates presents a prescriptive theory, laying down what names should be, rather than describing what they are. This distinction between prescriptive and descriptive theories is elaborated and used to illuminate the etymologies themselves. After discussing possible sources for the etymologies, the author argues that the etymological section amounts to a Platonic critique of the muddled attitude of Greek poets and thinkers towards names.

Fifty Years of Bangladesh Parliament : A Critical Evaluation /

: This book critically examines the constitutional position and contribution of the Bangladesh Parliament during the fifty years of its existence. Examining the institution through a "Westminster" lens, the book unearths how and why it behaves in an (un)Westminster, rather say the "Eastminster", way. This book is the first of its kind attempting a separation of powers and checks and balances inspired analysis of the Parliament vis-à-vis Bangladesh's government, judiciary, and the people. It explains how its internal democracy deficit arising from the country's undemocratic political partises deny the Bangladesh Parliament, its rightful place within the country's constitutional design.

Contingency and normativity : in dialogue with Richard Rorty /

: Richard Rorty's "neo-pragmatism" launched a powerful challenge to entrenched philosophical certainties of modernity, articulating a powerful picture of normativity as a distinctive activity of human beings. This "contingentism," with its emphasis on indeterminacy, ambiguity, uncertainty, and chance, depicts normativity as a practical human possibility rather than a metaphysical bottleneck which we must overcome at the cost of repudiating the concrete ways we grant epistemic and ethical meaning to our activities. The book is a critical survey of Rorty's philosophy, in light of contemporary theoretical debates around language, truth, justification, and naturalism, as well as his own resourceful attempts to renew philosophy from within by using the conceptual tools and argumentative techniques of both analytic philosophy and pragmatism.

Brill's companion to Roman tragedy /

: Until the Renaissance the centrality of Roman tragedy in Western society and culture was unchallenged. Studies on Roman Republican tragedy and on Imperial Roman tragedy by the contributors have been directing the gaze of scholarship back to Roman tragedy. This volume has two goals: first, to demonstrate that Republican tragedy had a far more central role in shaping Imperial tragedy than is currently thought, and quite possibly more important than Classical Greek tragedy. Second, the influence of other Roman literary genres on Roman tragedy is greater than has formerly been credited. Studies on von Kleist and Shelley, Eliot and Claus help reconstruct the ancient Roman stage by showing how moderns had thought to change it for contemporary aesthetics.

The Nag Hammadi story from the discovery to the publication /

: The Nag Hammadi Story is not a history of research in the usual sense of a Forschungsbericht , which would report on the massive amount of scholarship that has been devoted to the content of the Nag Hammadi Codices for more than a half-century. Rather it is a socio-historical narration of just what went on during the thirty-two years from their discovery late in 1945, via their initial trafficking, and then the attempts to monopolize them, until finally, through the intervention of UNESCO, the whole collection of thirteen Codices was published in facsimiles and in English translation, both completed late in 1977.

Hephaestion on metre /

: Hephaestion's Encheiridion is the most influential text in the history of metrical scholarship. It has been superseded for some genres of Greek verse but remains basic to the description of others. Its terminology continues to be applied to most of the verse written in Western literary traditions. The present volume offers a translation of th eelliptic Greek text and of a parallel account of metre included in Aristides Quintilianus On Music , with a commentary, an introduction analyzing the approach of ancient metricians in term of their own practical aims, an index of all significant words in the Greek texts, and an English index. The book is designed to be equally accessible to Greekless students of metre and to Greek scholars. It should enable them to take clear stand with regard to the ancient heritage in this field, and to define more unequivocally than has been possible any terms they choose to retain, thereby contributing towards greater coherence and consistency in discussion of poetic metre.

The text of the Targum of Job : an introduction and critical edition /

: The centrepiece of this book is a critical edition of the Targum of Job which notes all variants from a total of 14 manuscripts and 2 printed editions. In the introductory section the first two chapters give a description of the principal printed editions and the manuscripts. A chapter on \'The Stemma\' considers how the various strands of textual tradition relate to each other. There is also a chapter on \'Multiple Translation\', a phenomenon particularly associated with the Targum of Job whereby more than one translation is often given to whole verses or to individual words and phrases. A final chapter describes in detail the methods underlying the critical edition. This book will provide a useful tool for those working on the textual criticism of the Old Testament and for those interested in the history of Jewish biblical exegesis.

Eumenes of Cardia : a Greek among Macedonians /

: Eumenes of Cardia: A Greek Among Macedonians (2nd edition) updates the original work in light of a decade of scholarly activity and presents much new analysis influenced by this continuing scholarship. Eumenes of Cardia was a royal secretary who, in the years following the death of Alexander the Great became a major contender for power. Despite the fact that he had been chiefly an administrator rather than one of Alexander's elite military commanders, and that he was a Greek from the city of Cardia, as opposed to a native Macedonian, Eumenes came close to securing control of the Asian remnants of Alexander's empire. His history is important because our sources for the years immediately following the Conqueror's death are dominated by the Cardian's story. Moreover, his death marked in many respects the approaching end of the Macedonian dynasty of kings who had ruled Macedonia since the 8th c. BC, and his life illuminated both the nature of the Macedonian heritage and the possibilities of the new age ushered in by the conquests of the great Alexander.

Prophecy and prophets in stories : papers read at the Fifth Meeting of the Edinburgh Prophecy Network, Utrecht, October 2013 /

: The fifth meeting of the Edinburgh prophecy network focussed on the presence of prophets and prophecy in narrative texts. The papers in this volume scrutinize the image of prophecy through the analysis of narrative processes. The papers deal with a great time span: from the Hittite Empire, via the Hebrew Bible, Judaism and Islam, up to the early Modern Period. Although all sorts of variations could be detected - especially due to the variety of temporal contexts, some features are recurring especially in view of the anthropological phenomenon of prophecy and its function in narratives.

International Institutional Law : Seventh Revised Edition /

: This seventh, revised edition of International Institutional Law covers the most recent developments in the field. Although public international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the World Health Organization, the African Union, ASEAN, the European Union, Mercosur, NATO and OPEC have widely divergent objectives, powers, fields of activity and numbers of member states, they also have many institutional characteristics in common. There is unity within diversity. Rather than being a handbook for specific organizations, the book offers a comparative analysis of the institutional law of international organizations. It includes chapters on the rules and practices concerning membership, institutional structure, decision-making, financing, legal order, supervision and sanctions, legal status and external relations. The books theoretical framework and extensive use of examples from practice is designed to appeal to both academics and practitioners.

Maximus the Confessor and the Latin West /

: In 1941, when Hans Urs von Balthasar published his monograph on Maximus's Cosmic Liturgy, few theologians in the West had more than a passing familiarity with the thought of Maximus the Confessor (580-662). Nearly a century later, scholarship on Maximus is thriving, with new monographs and articles being published every year. If you believed that Maximus' thought was only relevant for the understanding of Eastern Christian theology, this volume will show that, in fact, Maximus' vision had a major impact on the whole arc of Western thought, from the Latin Middle Ages to the present. Far from a marginal, late-antique thinker, Maximus is key figure in the development of Christian theology, straddling the divide between East and West.

Early Christian Epistolarity /

: Many surviving early Christian writings are in the form of letters, some sent by and to those named, others imagined. What did the authors, copyists, and later collectors intend by authoring or reworking letters , as opposed to other genres? How did the first or subsequent readers respond, differently perhaps than to a novel or history? In her Radboud Prestige Lectures in New Testament, published in this volume, Judith Lieu explores these questions by drawing on the concept of 'epistolarity.' Her lectures are followed by chapters by leading experts in the field who engage her work from different angles, finding points of contact and potential conversation between different texts and authors, together with possibilities for further exploration and application.

Theosophy and the Study of Religion /

: Since its emergence in the nineteenth century, the Theosophical Society has wielded enormous influence across diverse fields, none more so than the study of religion. This volume explores this legacy in North America, Europe, and India, demonstrating its impact on the conceptualization of "religion" and its influence on methods of comparison. Unveiling overlooked entanglements, the volume challenges standard narratives in the history of religious studies and interrogates the deliberate neglect of theosophy's influence in the "secular" academy. In doing so, the work confronts lingering ghosts, urging a reappraisal that enriches the study of religion and offers prescriptions for its future.

Two studies in the semantics of the verb in classical Greek /

: The first part of this volume offers an analysis of the use and distribution of the perfect in the classical period of ancient Greek, based on the complete relevant material in Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides (tragic poetry), Aristophanes (comic poetry), Thucydides, Xenophon's Anabasis (historical prose), Lysias (rhetorical prose) and Xenophon's Opuscula (various prose types). The material is made accessible by several indices. In the second part insights gained in the field of discourse analysis are applied to the description of the contrast between aorist and present verb forms. The author has endeavoured to provide an explicit account of the actual functioning of these verb forms in their contexts . Special care has been given to reducing technical jargon in the interest of those who feel themselves classicists rather than professional linguists.
