Traditions of the Magi : Zoroastrianism in Greek and Latin literature /

This is the first full treatment of the Greek and Latin references to Zoroastrianism since the pioneering works of Benveniste, Bidez andamp; Cumont, and Clemen. It focuses on the possibilities offered by the classical reports on Zoroastrianism to reconstruct the history of that faith. The book is divided into three sections. The first section deals with introductory problems concerning ancient religious ethnography and current views of the history of Zoroastrianism. The second section consists of commentaries on five selected passages. The third section offers a thematical overview of the materials and their relevance for the history of Iranian religions. Apart from offering introductions to a wide range of debates and topics in Classics and Iranian studies, the book aims to illustrate the diversity of beliefs and practices in ancient Zoroastrianism.

This book argues that Origen's early Trinitarian theology cannot be understood apart from his engagement with monarchianism. After providing a detailed, synthetic account of monarchianism in the early third century, the book considers Origen's response to monarchianism alongside the responses of his rough contemporaries. Specifically, the final chapters address the question of Origen's subordinationism. When viewed in his contemporary context and not through the anachronistic lens of Nicene theology, this study argues that Origen's so-called subordinationism was an intentional anti-monarchian polemic strategy.

Lucian's Alexander the False Prophet is the only literary testimony to a highly influential cult of the 'New Asclepios Glycon' which, as archaeological evidence continues to document, spread all over the eastern Mediterranean basin throughout the second and third centuries AD. The extensive introduction deals with (1) the archaeological evidence, (2) the question of Lucian's historical reliability, (3) the reasons for Lucian's opposition to the oracle of Abonuteichos, (4) the institutions and the teaching of the cult at Abonuteichos. Furthermore, there is a commentary on all philological and historical questions and on those issues relevant to the history of religions. Using the framework provided by the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a major maritime testimony dating from AD 40-70, this volume brings together philologists, historians and archaeologists to look closely at the interactions between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean world. Centered on the antiquity but with a long-term approach and designed as a contribution to the French commentary on the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, this collection of papers relies on recent advances made in the field of ancient geography and text editing. It also takes advantage of ongoing fieldwork, both in terms of the archaeology of the establishments themselves, as well as the history of the techniques employed.
