Leonardo da Vinci and Architecture /

Found scattered among his numerous manuscripts, Leonardo's studies on architecture were conceived during an artistic journey of close to fifty years while their author was in the service of the most prestigious patrons. Dealing with churches, ephemeral monuments, urban reconstruction, fortifications, palaces and villas, and painted architecture-mostly ideal in nature-they are part of the architectural evolution of the late quattrocento and early cinquecento. Leonardo's drawings assimilate the ideas of the pioneers of Renaissance architecture and focus on particular aspects, such as interventions on existing structures, classical orders, staircases, and decoration. Leonardo's analysis sheds light on dialogues with Bramante, Francesco di Giorgio, Giuliano da Sangallo, Michelangelo, Baldassare Peruzzi and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and allows us to better understand whether his contributions were innovative, or singular interpretations of the achievements of his time. Promise-giving and treaty-making : Homer and the Near East /

This book challenges the current view of the Homeric epics that they reflect only the institutions and ideas of the Dark Ages, during which they were composed, telling us nothing about the Mycenaean Age preceding it. Comparing evidence from the Near East with the Homeric corpus, Peter Karavites argues that the epics actually contain much that harks back to the Mycenaean Age, and that the two eras may not be completely discontinuous after all. Most contemporary scholars maintain that the mighty Mycenaean period was almost completely separated from the Dark Ages and that virtually no evidence of the former remains, with the exception of the archeological finds and the meager testimony of the Linear B tablets. However, the Near Eastern evidence about treaties and other forms of promising suggests that the Iliad and Odyssey may indeed provide historical pictures of the Mycenaean times featured in their narratives.

This volume investigates various exegetical possibilities in Christian Latin poetry during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In the Latin West poetry was mainly associated with the powerful pagan tradition of writers like Vergil and Ovid, and by many poetry was considered to tell lies and provide mere entertainment potentially corrupting the soul. Therefore, Christians initially had reservations about this genre and believed it to be incompatible with Christian worship, literacy and intellectual activity. In practice, however, forms of specifically Christian poetry developed from the end of the third century onwards; theoretical reconciliations were developed around 400 A.D. This collection examines specimens of Christian poetry from Juvencus (the first biblical epicist shortly after 300) up to the thirteenth century. Its particular usefulness lies in the combination of literary theory and hermeneutics, close readings of the texts and new readings on a sound philological basis.

The "Northern Storerooms" of Thutmosis III are a set of eight chambers accessible through the corridor within the sandstone enclosure of the Temple of Amun-Re at Karnak. Built by Thutmosis III during his autonomous reign after the death of Queen Hatshepsut, these chambers form a complex with restricted access that underwent several architectural transformations. Among the most remarkable are the modification of its western entrance during Thutmosis III's own reign and the decoration of one of the chambers by Ptolemy XI Soter II, nearly fourteen centuries after its construction. This complex maintains close connections with other structures from the reign of Thutmosis III, including the Akh-menu, the new cultic center of the Temple of Amun-Re, as well as the access areas and the central part of the Karnak Temple. This volume presents, for the first time, all of the epigraphic material, largely unpublished, from this sector (including facsimiles, hieroglyphic texts, and translations), along with complete photographic coverage, undertaken after the completion of a major restoration and conservation programme in 2016.
