The specific laws of composition of biblical texts, which were first discovered from the mid-eighteenth century, are becoming increasingly well-known. This Treaty represents the sum of Biblical and Semitic rhetoric, in an abridged translation of the French original. The first chapter traces the history of the discovery of biblical rhetoric, the last chapter opens future prospects. Ce texte composite, qui ne peut être daté avec précision, est un ouvrage de magie basée sur la doctrine de la science des lettres ( 'ilm al-ḥurūf ). Le présent livre offre la première édition critique du texte, accompagnée d'une traduction annotée et d'une étude historique et philologique exposant les principes théoriques à la base des procédés décrits dans les recettes ainsi que des entités, objets et ingrédients utilisés (noms des anges invoqués, types de fumigations et d'encres, dessins et figures, et cetera). Il s'agit d'une des premières éditions critiques d'un traité de magie pratique des lettres, genre encore fort méconnu bien qu'abondamment représenté dans les manuscrits arabes. The Kitāb dā'irat al-aḥruf al-abjadiyya is a composite treatise of letter magic attributed to Hermes. The edition and annotated translation of the Arabic text are accompanied by an explanation of the theoretical principles underlying the procedures described in the recipes, and a discussion of the entities, objects and ingredients used. These include names of the angels to be summoned, types of incenses and inks to be used, sketches and images to be drawn, et cetera This is one of the first critical editions and translations of a full-length text of practical magic containing recipes pertaining to 'ilm al-ḥurūf (the science of letters). The book is addressed to Arabists and to any non-Arabist interested in the tradition of magic.

The Hermetic writings transmitted in Greek, Latin and Coptic ( Corpus hermeticum , Asclepius and the three Hermetic texts in Codex VI of Nag Hammadi) are evidences of different religious trends within the Hermetic tradition, between the 2nd and the 4th centuries. These currents belong to Egyptian wisdom, while mixing Egyptian and Greek traditions, and they propose a way to salvation, the way of Hermes. This volume is the first monograph which explores the ritual practices and their place on this way to salvation. Sacrifices, prayers, the baptism in the crater, regeneration and visions are successively analyzed in Greek, Latin and Coptic literature. A large place is reserved for didactic practice, which participates in the spiritual formation of the disciple, especially through spiritual exercises. This book studies also how at least some authors participate in philosophical and religious debates of their time. It will be of interest to both historians of the end of Antiquity and historians of religion and philosophy. Les écrits hermétiques transmis en grec, latin et copte ( Corpus hermeticum , Asclepius et les trois textes hermétiques du Codex VI de Nag Hammadi) sont les témoins de différents courants religieux qui relèvent de la tradition hermétique, entre le IIe et le IVe siècle. Ces courants appartiennent à un milieu de sagesse égyptien, tout en mêlant tradition égyptienne et tradition grecque, et proposent une voie de salut, la voie d'Hermès. Ce volume est la première monographie qui étudie les pratiques rituelles et leur place dans la voie de salut. À partir de la documentation grecque, latine et copte, sont tour à tour analysées les sacrifices, les prières, le baptême dans le cratère, la régénération et les visions. Une place importante est accordée à la pratique didactique, qui participe à la formation spirituelle du disciple, notamment par le biais d'exercices spirituels. Ce livre étudie aussi la manière dont au moins certains auteurs s'intègrent dans les débats philosophico-religieux de leur époque. Il intéressera aussi bien les historiens de la fin de l'Antiquité, les historiens des religions que ceux de la philosophie.

The language of Ḫaṣāʾiṣ is reputed to be difficult to access, and the thought of its author relatively opaque. With this book, readers now have a key to penetrate the linguistic thought of one of the most important grammarians in the Arabic grammatical tradition. It shows how Ibn Ǧinnī used the concepts of the episteme of his time to systematize grammatical explanatory reasoning. On reading this book, the reader will also perceive the importance attached by Ibn Ǧinnī to the role played by the speaker in language change, in that the speaker is seen as the true agent (ʿāmil) of his discourse. This work also offers the reader a broader perspective on Ibn Ǧinnī's relationship with the grammatical tradition, as it shows, for example, that most of Ibn Ǧinnī's diachronic reflections are borrowed from one of Sībawayhi's forgotten disciples (180/796): al-Aḫfaš al-Awsaṭ (215/830).

The problem of the Materia Prima is certainly one of the most important challenges of late antique Physics. It is interesting to note that such a difficulty has never been focused on an exhaustive treatise in Antiquity. If the question of the matter resists any investigation, it is because the matter is radically 'aneideos' (without form) even though it is the condition 'sine qua non' of the existence of all forms in the sensible world. The present study proposes the first translation in French of the entire eleventh Book of the Philoponus' Contra Proclum (VIe s.) which precisely discusses the status of the Prime Matter. After having clarified the context of such a question in the Neoplatonic Alexandrian School, it puts forward a detailled step-to-step analysis of the Philoponian argument, the notions used by him and a new general theory which attempts to evaluate the pertinence and the internal coherence of his contribution to this very problematic question. Le problème de la Materia Prima est sans aucun doute l'une des questions les plus redoutables de la physique tardo-antique. Du moins s'il faut en croire la difficulté à en circonscrire la théorie dans un traité qui put faire école. Si la matière, en effet, résiste à toute investigation rationnelle c'est qu'elle est foncièrement sans forme bien qu'elle soit la condition sine qua non d'existence de toutes les formes du monde sensible. La présente étude propose la première traduction en Français du Livre XI du Contra Proclum de Jean Philopon (VIe s.). Elle commence par recontextualiser le propos de Philopon en l'inscrivant dans la tradition de la 'Quaestio disputata' de l'Ecole néoplatonicienne d'Alexandrie. Chaque sous-chapitre traduit et exhaustivement annoté est suivi d'une analyse détaillée de l'argument philoponien et des notions mobilisées, ainsi que d'une théorie générale qui essayera à chaque fois d'évaluer la cohérence et la pertinence du propos du grammairien alexandrin.

Cicero's dialogue Brutus offers a history of Roman eloquence from its origins and Greek roots up to the time of the work's composition (46 BC) in the late Republic. It forms part of Cicero's response to the political and intellectual changes brought about by Caesar's dictatorship and has therefore attracted considerable scholarly attention from a number of fields. However, scholarly discourse has frequently remained isolated. This volume addresses the need to look at Cicero's treatise from an interdisciplinary angle and assembles contributions from scholars of historiography, prosopography, rhetoric, philosophy and politics. It thus puts forward a coherent and genuine interpretation of Cicero's Brutus that showcases the significance of this text for our understanding of the final years of the Roman Republic.

In Figures de l'épouvante grecques de l'antiquité au présent , Maria Patera examines an unfamiliar aspect of the Greek pedagogy of fear, illustrated by narratives about four Greek terrifying figures: Lamia, Mormô, Gellô and Empousa. These female bogeys belong to the children's world. Each of those figures provokes fear in a particular way, according to its own characteristics (metamorphosis, hybridity, cannibalism, et cetera). By means of a diachronic comparison of the ancient figures with their Byzantine and modern Greek namesakes, each of them is assigned a proper position within its specific historical, cultural, and religious context. Dans Figures de l'épouvante grecques de l'antiquité au présent , Maria Patera examine un aspect mal connu de la pédagogie grecque, celui de la peur, illustré à travers des récits principalement destinés aux enfants à propos des épouvantails Lamia, Mormô, Gellô et Empousa. Ces quatre figures féminines appartiennent aux chambres enfantines et aux contes de bonnes femmes. Chacune d'entre elles matérialise un aspect de l'épouvante à travers ses façons d'agir et ses traits caractéristiques (métamorphose, hybridité, anthropophagie, et cetera). Un examen diachronique permet de comparer les personnages anciens à leurs homonymes byzantins et néo-grecs et de déterminer leurs fonctions respectives dans chaque contexte historique, religieux et culturel donné.
