When juxtaposed with the practice of aggressive action and the brutal reality of war, Russian ideas appear completely incomprehensible. For more than three hundred years, Russians have cultivated the myth of the community, brotherhood of blood, and the indissoluble bond of the brotherly East Slavic peoples, while only recently they have unleashed a bloody war against the Ukrainians, killing children and defenceless civilians, burning and destroying everything along the way, and threatening the "mother of all Ruthenian cities" - Kyiv. The Russian invasion is difficult to explain using the concepts of realism or political pragmatism. They are also completely useless for understanding the mentality of Russians. To this day, the majority of Russians do not accept the existence of separate Ukrainian and Belarusian identities, considering Ukrainians and Belarusians as subgroups of the Russian nation, and the Belarusian and Ukrainian languages as dialects of Russian. They tacitly accept the Kremlin's arguments about the need to defend the Russian-speaking inhabitants of Ukrainian lands against the "fascist coup of the Banderites" and to bring about the "denazification" of Ukraine. The aim of the present work is to analyse the causes of this state of affairs from a linguocultural perspective.

At the outset, revisionist essays on the Homeric epics examine such questions as historical memory, Homer's audience(s), descriptive strategies, ring-composition, and the status of orality as a constitutive feature of the epics. In Arabic Instruction in Israel Allon J. Uhlmann confronts two conundrums, namely the persistently poor level of Arabic proficiency among Jewish Arabic students and teachers, and the traumatic alienation of Arab students by university Arabic grammar instruction. These are not aberrations but rather direct, albeit unintended, systemic consequences of the field of Arabic instruction, where Jewish students encounter Arabic as a dead, hostile language; Jewish hegemony devalues native Arabic proficiency; and Arab students are locked into a fractured educational trajectory - encountering two alienating and mutually unintelligible grammars of Arabic at school and at university. This book is a comprehensive study of the Kitāb of Sībawayhi (d. 180/796), undoubtedly the most authoritative work in the long history of Arabic grammar. It carefully examines the methodological concepts and methods that underline Sībawayhi's analysis of Arabic and the way in which these methods evolved at the hands of later grammarians. Placing the Kitāb within the context of early Arabic philological activity, this book analyzes a wide range of its passages and demonstrates the coherency of its author's system of grammatical analysis and the interrelatedness of his analytical tools and notions. In particular, Sībawayhi's huge influence on the overall Arabic grammatical tradition is highlighted throughout the book. This notwithstanding, it is argued that most later grammarians largely neglect the semantic dimension which vividly features in Sībawayhi's approach to language as a social behavior and his reconstruction of the internal thinking of the speaker and the listener.

In Physicalist Soteriology in Hilary of Poitiers , Ellen Scully presents Hilary as a representative of the "mystical" or "physical" trajectory of patristic soteriology most often associated with the Greek fathers. Scully shows that Hilary's physicalism is unique, both in its Latin non-Platonic provenance and its conceptual foundation, namely that the incarnation has salvific effects for all humanity because Christ's body contains every human individual. Hilary's soteriological conviction that all humans are present in Christ's body has theological ramifications that expand beyond soteriology to include christology, eschatology, ecclesiology, and Trinitarian theology. In detailing these ramifications, Scully illumines the pervasive centrality of physicalism in Hilary's theology while correcting standard soteriological presentations of physicalism as an exclusively Greek phenomenon.

Verbal aspect in the Book of Revelatio n the function of Greek verb tenses in John's Apocalypse /

The book of Revelation is well-known for its grammatical infelicities. More specifically, Revelation exhibits apparently \'odd\' use of Greek verb tenses. Most attemtps to describe this \'odd\' use of verb tenses start with the assumption that Greek verb tenses are primarily temporal in meaning. In order to explain Revelation's apparent violation of these temporal values, scholars have proposed some level of semitic influence from the Hebrew tense system as making sense of this \'odd\' use of tenses. However, recent research into verbal aspect, which calls into question this temporal orientation, and suggests that Greek verb tenses grammaticalize aspect and not time, has opened up new avenues for explaining the Greek verb tense usage in Revelation. This book applies verbal aspect theory to tense usage in Revelation and focuses on how the tenses, as communicating verbal aspect, function within sections of Revelation.

Ogren's book is the very first to seriously juxtapose the thought of the great Jewish thinker Yohanan Alemanno, Alemanno's famed Christian interlocutor, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, the important Iberian exegete active in Italy, Isaac Abravanel, and Abravanel's renowned philosopher son Judah, known as Leone Ebreo. By bringing these thinkers together, this book presents a new understanding of early modern uses of Jewish texts and hermeneutics. Four essays on the Homeric epics present recent research into performative aspects of language, cognitive theory and oral composition, a re-evaluation of Parry's oral-formulaic theory, and a new perspective on the poem's transmission. These are complemented by studies of the oral nature of Greek proverbial expressions, and of poetic authority within a fluid oral tradition.
