This edited volume develops a theoretical framework-what we call urban regimes of dispossession -for understanding how urban actors organize dispossession and govern the urban dispossessed, how the urban dispossessed arrange, experience and resist dispossession, and how urban dispossession contributes to creating/expanding capitalist systems or transforming urban societies in the global south. The book's main arguments are built on a survey of the nearly two-hundred-year history of global dispossession studies and solid empirical evidence from three continents-Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and seven countries- Bangladesh, Brazil, Honduras, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Uganda. Eighteen scholars bring diverse perspectives and realities on urban dispossession, which will appeal to students, scholars, planners, and practitioners across various social scientific disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, urban studies, political economy, international relations, political science, economics, gender studies, and geography. Religion, Ethnicity and Transnational Migration between West Africa and Europe focuses on the West African migrants' presence in Europe and the way they negotiate religion and ethnicity in a new context. Special attention is given to the diversity of religious background of the migrants and to exploration of interreligious (especially Christian-Muslim) relations. These dimensions of transnational migration have not been widely researched, yet. After introducing the new African religious diaspora, the situation of the Senegalese, Ghanaian and Fulbe migrants - both Christian and Muslim - in France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland is analysed. The impact the migrants make on their communities of origin in Africa is also taken into account. Between Worlds expands beyond the focus of the previous volume-the British colony of Natal-to the more challenging framework of the American Zulu Mission and its Congregational churches in southeastern Africa between the 1880s and 1920s. This study rejects arguments by many critical scholars, who see Western missionaries at best as adjuncts of the colonial project, imposing an understanding of Western Christianity that inevitably clashes with alien and resistant African cultures. The mission-church relationship in this era also changes dramatically especially in urban environments. The church in South Africa becomes the dominant partner from the 1880s and by 1900 the mission has become an adjunct of the church-an understanding with far-reaching consequences elsewhere in the subcontinent.

This book examines early modern Jerusalem's waqf system through an Ottoman provincial lens, analyzing how diverse social groups engaged with these endowments in judicial contexts. Conceptualizing waqf s-central to the city's socioeconomic fabric and urban identity-as an interconnected " waqf network", the research demonstrates the commodification of waqf offices among elites, and their enduring control over pious foundations. These processes reveal how provincial power structures mediated between imperial standards and local interests.
