Religion in Livy /
:
This book examines the use that Livy made of religious topics, and shows how this fits in with other aspects of his narrative. The author shows how 'Livy's views of religion' depend less on personal belief than on the refinement of his narrative technique. He looks at the history decade by decade, and demonstrates that there are radical differences between different sections: in some Livy uses large-scale religious themes, but in others he deliberately avoids them. By a systematic analysis of Livy's narrative patterns and comparison with other ancient versions, it is proved that this is not simply due to subject-matter, but reflects a development in Livy's handling of his material. This profound difference between decades throws doubt on much of the standard picture of Livy: it also points to a need to revise notions of 'Augustan religious ideology'.

The apostolic age in patristic thought /
:
This volume deals with how Christians of the first centuries looked back on the period of the nascent Church. Thanks to the incomparable stature of its founder, Jesus Christ, who had descended from heaven and commissioned his Apostles, this period was authorative for all Christians in matters of doctrine, institutions, rites and morality, a new phenomenon in the Graeco-Roman world. Its implications are explored in sixteen essays dealing with various subjects such as liturgy, the canon of Scriptures, the role of miracles, art, monasticism, and ministry. All contributions, taking into account both the views of individual Church fathers and Gnostic and Manichaean texts, make a large amount of primary material available.

In Ciceros Korrespondenz als Medium literarischen und gesellschaftlichen Handelns Meike Rühl sheds new light on the 'epistolarity' of Cicero's letters. Her main focus is on the specificities of a written conversation between two spatially separated individuals. Rühl analyses the communicative strategies adopted by Cicero to compensate the multifaceted (spatial and social) distance between the author and the addressee. In a further step, the study takes a closer look at the space created within the letters and examines the political and literary standpoints of the correspondents in the cultural context of the late Roman republic.
